Genetic Differentiation Between Mallee and Tree Forms in the Eucalyptus Loxophleba Complex

BYRNEà,* Department of Botany, The University of Western Australia, Crawley, WA 6917, and àCALMScience, Department of Conservation and Land Management, Locked Bag 104, Bentley Delivery Centre, WA 6983, Australia The Eucalyptus loxophleba complex comprises two tree taxa (E. loxophleba ssp. loxophleba and ssp. supralaevis), two mallee taxa (E. loxophleba ssp. lissophloia and ssp. gratiae), and three rare mallee species, of which one, E. blaxellii, is included in this study. The genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships between the taxa, particularly in relation to habit, were assessed using anonymous nuclear RFLP loci. The level of diversity in the taxa was high and similar to that detected in other eucalypt species. The populations showed low dierentiation at both the subspecies and the species levels. Phylogenetic relationships showed some genetic separation between the tree and mallee habit but no separation of the two taxa within the tree habit or within the mallee habit. The genetic analysis does not support the recognition of E. gratiae as a separate species. The geographically restricted E. blaxellii showed similar levels of diversity to populations of the other widespread taxa of E. loxophleba. This paper reviews the biogeography and ecology of the family Meliaceae and maps many of the clades. Recently published molecular phylogenies are used as a framework to interpret distributional and ecological data. The sections on distribution concentrate on allopatry, on areas of overlap among clades, and on centres of diversity. The sections on ecology focus on populations of the family that are not in typical, dry-ground, lowland rain forest, for example, in and around mangrove forest, in peat swamp and other kinds of freshwater swamp forest, on limestone, and in open vegetation such as savanna woodland. Information on the altitudinal range of the genera is presented, and brief notes on architecture are also given. The paper considers the relationship between the distribution and ecology of the taxa, and the interpretation of the fossil record of the family, along with its significance for biogeographic studies. Finally, the paper discusses whether the evolution of Meliaceae can be attributed to ‘radiations’ from restricted centres of origin into new morphological, geographical and ecological space, or whether it is better explained by phases of vicariance in widespread ancestors, alternating with phases of range expansion. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Ericaceae in Malesia: vicariance biogeography, terrane tectonics and ecology. Telopea 10(1): 311–449. The Ericaceae are cosmopolitan but the main clades have well-marked centres of diversity and endemism in different parts of the world. Erica and its relatives, the heaths, are mainly in South Africa, while their sister group, Rhododendron and relatives, has centres of diversity in N Burma/SW China and New Guinea, giving an Indian Ocean affinity. The Vaccinioideae are largely Pacific-based, and epacrids are mainly in Australasia. The different centres, and trans-Indian, trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic Ocean disjunctions all indicate origin by vicariance. The different main massings are reflected in the different distributions of the subfamilies within Malesia. With respect to plant architecture, in Rhododendron inflorescence bracts and leaves are very different. Erica and relatives with the ‘ericoid’ habit have similar leaves and bracts, and the individual plants may be homologous with inflorescences of Rhododendron. Furthermore, in the ericoids the ‘inflorescence-plant’ has also been largely sterilised, leaving shoots with mainly just bracts, and flowers restricted to distal parts of the shoot. The epacrids are also ‘inflorescence-plants’ with foliage comprised of ‘bracts’, but their sister group, the Vaccinioideae, have dimorphic foliage (leaves and bracts). In Malesian Ericaceae, the four large genera and the family as a whole have most species in the 1500–2000 m altitudinal belt, lower than is often thought and within the range of sweet potato cultivation. -

Executive Summary Climate change is likely to have a significant effect on many trees in the City of Melbourne. Some species will perform better, while some will perform worse. The report describes the results of a project exploring the vulnerability of tree species currently planted in the City of Melbourne, and identifies some potential new species that may be more suitable for the City’s climate futures. A list of species combining those currently in the City of Melbourne’s urban forest with those being newly planted in the City of Melbourne was created. The global locations where species occur naturally and are in cultivation (and abundance where available) were compiled from existing datasets, such as ‘open data’ tree inventories and extracted from other published data, from approximately 200 cities around the world.
