EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Concerns regarding a lack of native seed supply have been raised within the Australian and global ecological restoration communities for several decades. Recent natural disasters such as the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires in Australia exacerbate that concern. Many factors can contribute to supply shortages, including failed revegetation projects. Improved guidance on where to source native seed to reduce the possibility of maladaptation to the planting site offers one possible solution. Seed transfer zones (STZs) provide clarification on where seed can be geographically transferred with little disruption of genetic patterns or loss of local adaptation to support better restoration outcomes. The aim of this report is to identify the use of STZs and the level of prescription of seed movement in Australia and internationally, and to report on research or actions that have contributed to or is currently underway that may assist with consensus for and the development of STZs. This report found that prescribed or enforced policy on seed movement and/or the use of STZs in Australia and the United States of America (US) is rarely generated from the top levels of governments or their agencies. Instead, decision making comes from the various offices of the agencies (a bottom up approach, rather than top down) but often with guidance from the respective agency. The level of guidance and enforcement can vary within agencies. It is uncommon for policy on seed sourcing to be mandatory, instead, guidance is often provided. By contrast, in many European countries, there is a top down approach where governments provide clear seed sourcing guidelines (in some cases legislated) and there is a high level of cooperation between countries to achieve major restoration goals and improve current practices. This report is the first to qualify individual organisations’ practice and policies on prescribed native seed movements in Australia. Being in isolation at home has been a mixed blessing.

Since our last Newsletter, I have been doing some reading on what I call the "new taxonomy" ie the use of new techniques such as cladistics and molecular analysis to assist with classification of plants. I can't say that I am any closer to understanding much of it but I am at least beginning to "get a handle on" how the new and old practices relate to each other. I have written a short piece later in the Newsletter with some further thoughts but as the professionals (botanists, biologists, taxonomists) are seemingly split on just how far to go with the new taxonomy, I doubt whether the issues raised with the proposed inclusion of Dryandra into Banksia will be sorted out any time soon. On this matter, I am very grateful to Dr. Kevin Thiele, Curator of the Western Australian Herbarium and co- author of the paper which formalized the proposed incorporation, for taking up the challenge of preparing an explanation in layperson's terns of the reasons behind their thinking and for so ably setting the background to much of the new way of looking at plant classification.

    Heredity (2013) 111, 437–444 & 2013 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved 0018-067X/13 www.nature.com/hdy ORIGINAL ARTICLE Genetic connectivity and diversity in inselberg populations of Acacia woodmaniorum, a rare endemic of the Yilgarn Craton banded iron formations MA Millar, DJ Coates and M Byrne Historically rare plant species with disjunct population distributions and small population sizes might be expected to show significant genetic structure and low levels of genetic diversity because of the effects of inbreeding and genetic drift. Across the globe, terrestrial inselbergs are habitat for rich, often rare and endemic flora and are valuable systems for investigating evolutionary processes that shape patterns of genetic structure and levels of genetic diversity at the landscape scale. We assessed genetic structure and levels of genetic diversity across the range of the historically rare inselberg endemic Acacia woodmaniorum. Phylogeographic and genetic structure indicates that connectivity is not sufficient to produce a panmictic population across the limited geographic range of the species. However, historical levels of gene flow are sufficient to maintain a high degree of adaptive connectivity across the landscape. Genetic diversity indicates gene flow is sufficient to largely counteract any negative genetic effects of inbreeding and random genetic drift in even the most disjunct or smallest populations. Phylogeographic and genetic structure, a signal of isolation by distance and a lack of evidence of recent genetic bottlenecks suggest long-term stability of contemporary population distributions and population sizes. There is some evidence that genetic connectivity among disjunct outcrops may be facilitated by the occasional long distance dispersal of Acacia polyads carried by insect pollinators moved by prevailing winds.

Acacia longifolia is an aggressive invader worldwide. This species was brought to Portugal by the forestry services and is now found throughout the country with very strong ecological and social impacts. Particularly, genetic variability evaluation in invasive ranges clearly deserves more attention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity and the genetic differentiation among populations of the alien in- vasive A. longifolia under different Mediterranean conditions. For that we studied three sandy dune populations along the Portuguese coast: Osso da Baleia (mesomediterranean), Pinheiro da Cruz and Vila Nova de Milfontes (termomediterranean). All sampled acacia plants were located underneath a pine forest, with the exception of the latter case study, where we also sampled in a diversified habitat conditions associated with the margins of agriculture fields.
