Natural Diversity Data Base 2003). The Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge populations have been monitored annually since 1992 (J. Silveira in litt. 2000). One additional occurrence of C. hooveri in Merced County is on private land (the Bert Crane Ranch) that is protected from development by a conservation easement (J. Silveira in litt. 2000). We funded a status survey for Chamaesyce hooveri and other vernal pool plants in 1986 and 1987 (Stone et al. 1988), resulting in 10 new occurrences. We and the California Department of Fish and Game jointly funded an ecological study of the Vina Plains Preserve pools, which was conducted by faculty from California State University, Chico (Alexander and Schlising 1997). Independent surveys conducted by Joseph Silveira led to discovery of the Merced and Glenn county occurrences (J. Silveira in litt. 2000). Private landowners also have contributed to conservation of this species. One pool in Tehama County was fenced by the property owner in the late 1980s, to exclude livestock (Stone et al. 1988). 3. ERYNGIUM CONSTANCEI (LOCH LOMOND BUTTON-CELERY) a. Description and Taxonomy Taxonomy.—Loch Lomond button-celery, specifically known as Eryngium constancei (Sheikh 1983), is a member of the carrot family (Apiaceae). This species was only recently described and therefore has no history of name changes. The common name was derived from the type locality, Loch Lomond, which is in Lake County (Sheikh 1983). Other common names for this species are Loch Lomond coyote-thistle (Skinner and Pavlik 1994) and Constance’s coyote-thistle (Smith et al. 1980). Description and Identification.—Certain features are common to species of the genus Eryngium. -

This biology letter report also includes a discussion of any potential biological resources that may be subject to regulation under the City of Chula Vista Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) Subarea Plan (Subarea Plan) (City of Chula Vista 2003). Project Location The property (i.e., on-site; Assessor’s Parcel Number 644-040-01-00) occupies 9.79 acres and is located approximately 0.2 miles east of Interstate 805 between Main Street and Olympic Parkway (Figure 1, Project Location). The project also includes an off-site impact area of 0.22 acre located along the southeastern corner of the site where future utility connections may occur, making the total study area acreage for the project 10.01 acres. The site is located on Shinohara Lane accessed from Brandywine Avenue and is located on the U.S. Geological Service 7.5-minute series topographic Imperial Beach quadrangle map. The site exists within an urban portion of the City and is bound on the south and east by industrial buildings, to the west by single-family residences, and to the north by multi-family condominiums (Figure 2, Aerial Image). -

SYTSMA 2 2 Department of Botany, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706 USA • Premise of the study: The mint family (Lamiaceae) is the sixth largest family of fl owering plants, with the tribe Mentheae containing about a third of the species. We present a detailed perspective on the evolution of the tribe Mentheae based on a phylogenetic analysis of cpDNA and nrDNA that is the most comprehensive to date, a biogeographic set of analyses using a fossil-calibrated chronogram, and an examination of staminal evolution. • Methods: Data from four cpDNA and two nrDNA markers representing all extant genera within the tribe Mentheae were ana- lyzed using the programs BEAST, Lagrange, S-DIVA, and BayesTraits. BEAST was used to simultaneously estimate phylog- eny and divergence times, Lagrange and S-DIVA were used for biogeographical reconstruction, and BayesTraits was used to infer staminal evolution within the tribe. • Key results: Currently accepted subtribal delimitations are shown to be invalid and are updated. The Mentheae and all fi ve of its subtribes have a Mediterranean origin and have dispersed to the New World multiple times. The vast majority of New World species of subtribe Menthinae are the product of a single dispersal event in the mid-late Miocene. At least four transitions from four stamens to two stamens have occurred within Mentheae, once in the subtribe Salviinae, once in the subtribe Lycopinae, and at least twice in the subtribe Menthinae. -
