Year: 2019 Language: English Pages: 38 Name of Supervisor: Thomas Sabel The survey examines the factors behind the decreasing performance of the tea industry of Bangladesh in the Sylhet district. The analysis has been concluded through a productivity analysis of the companies. The actual scenario of the tea industry has also been examined. A total of five tea companies and ten tea estates (two from each tea company) were selected for the study. Primary data were collected through a survey of both the supervisors of the company and managers of the tea estates. The collected data were analyzed using mean, percentage, productivity and trend analysis. It was found that tea companies are suffering from capital shortage, lack of modern technology adaptation, lack of expert labor and lack of government back-up. Climate change is also playing a remarkable role. Though the production of tea is increasing, it is not enough even for the local nor the domestic consumers. The study has concluded that government support and adaptation to new technologies and methods may change the whole scenario sooner or later. The respondents’ evaluation shows the reliability and the assurance of the decrease in the performance of tea estates in Bangladesh. Here, the tea industry is one of the key factors that influences the economy of Bangladesh.

    12 BRAHMANICAL-BUDDHIST SCULPTURES: LOOKING FOR ‘BENGAL’NESS Jinah Kim Introduction In the institutions in West Bengal and Bangladesh, such as the Indian Museum in Kolkata, India, and the National Museum of Bangladesh in Dhaka, Bangladesh, most sculptures collected from Bihar, West Bengal and Bangladesh are identified with their reported find spots. In the case of National Museum of Bangladesh where a spacious and carefully lit gallery is dedicated to the Brahmanical and Buddhist sculptures of early medieval Bengal, an image’s find spot is mentioned quite meticulously, often down to a name of a village in a district where the image was originally found. Thanks to the unflagging efforts of the first curator of the collection, Nalini Kanta Bhattasali in the 1920s and those who served the museum since, we have detailed information about the find spots of many images as well as the conditions in which some of them were installed for ritual use in the early 20th century in the Dhaka district and adjacent districts of Faridpur and Comilla. The National Museum of Bangladesh, in fact, holds the finest examples of early medieval sculptures that, we would suggest, signal the emergence of a unique “Vabga” style of sculptural production. This chapter examines the Brahmanical-Buddhist sculpture of Bengal. It is not difficult to recognize Bengal as a place with distinct regional characteristics today despite the political line dividing the region into two countries. There is a unique language, Bengali or Bangla, with its own script, which is one of the main markers of a region’s cultural identity.

This thesis explores the tales of ordinary middle class Hindu Bengali women and their different experiences of the period 1930-1955 through fiction written by women. To undermine the logic of colonialism the Indian nationalist movement had sought to project an image of a modern, progressive, egalitarian society while also holding on to its distinctive cultural identity. The fulfilment of these twin objectives hinged on Indian women. Consequently Bengali women found themselves negotiating different objectives that required them to be ‘modern’ as well as patient, self-sacrificing, pure and faithful like Sita.

On the other side, in the other Bengal, events move to an inexorable climax, while the fictional characters flit across the stage, the shadow of actual historical figures loom large — Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan, General Niazi and the day by day account of how the mighty Pakistan Army, one of the best in the world was doomed to a most humiliating defeat. This novel of epic proportions is an unique experiment in blending fiction with facts, an attempt to truthfully capture a swiftly moving course of events, a compelling novel difficult to put down.
