Graellsia, 66(2): 233-280. Se presenta un estudio morfológico de Laparocerus undatus Wollaston, 1864 que com- prende la anatomía externa e interna del adulto, incluido el canal alimentario, sistema ner- vioso central y sistema reproductor. También se describen las anatomías de la larva y de la pupa, hasta ahora desconocidas en el género. Los Laparocerus son curculiónidos entimi- nos que muestran algunos caracteres primitivos infrecuentes en el grupo. Se plantea si se justifica o no mantener la tribu Laparocerini, pendiente de revisión desde que fuera esta- blecida por Lacordaire en 1863. Se discuten las semejanzas halladas en los caracteres ima- ginales y preimaginales con otros géneros y tribus, y se buscan las relaciones genéticas más cercanas empleando secuencias parciales del gen 16SrRNA de una veintena de espe- cies, obtenidas de GenBank. K1P 6P4, CANADA;[email protected] 3Department of Recent Invertebrates, Virginia Museum of Natural History, 21 Starling Avenue, Martinsville, Virginia 24112; [email protected] ABSTRACT: One-hundred thirty-five taxa (130 identified to species), in at least 97 genera, of weevils (superfamily Curculionoidea) were documented during a 21-year field survey (1998–2018) of the George Washington Memorial Parkway national park site that spans parts of Fairfax and Arlington Counties in Virginia. Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species. Images of five species new to Virginia are provided. Keywords: beetles, biodiversity, Malaise traps, national parks, new state records, Potomac Gorge. INTRODUCTION This study provides a preliminary list of the weevils of the superfamily Curculionoidea within the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) national park site in northern Virginia. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded. -

We performed Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony combined phylogenetic analyses with the main objective of testing higher-level relationships and the naturalness of the major Neotropical and Southern South American (Patagonia and Andes) tribes, including some members from other regions. We compiled a data matrix of 67 terminal units with 63 Entiminae species, as well as four outgroup taxa from Cyclominae, by 3522 molecular (from nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA, and mitochondrial 16S rDNA and COI gene sequences) and 70 morphological characters. The resulting trees recover a clade Entiminae with a monophyletic Cylydrorhinini and Premnotrypes branching off early. -

Pseudotrachyphloeosoma gen. nov. is erected for the species Trachyphloeosoma alternatum Marshall, 1916, living in South India. Laohajekia gen. nov. is described as a monotypic genus for the new species L. trachyphloeiformis sp. nov. from Laos. One new species of Trachyodes Marshall, 1916, Trachyphloeosoma Wollaston, 1869 and one new species of Myosides Roelofs, 1873, the later from the tribe Cyphicerini Lacordaire, 1863, are described and illustrated: Trachyodes kejvali sp. nov. from South India, Trachyphloeosoma nudum sp. nov. from Vietnam and Myosides morimotoi sp. nov. from Taiwan. Trachyphloeophana Heller, 1929 as a junior synonym of Trachyphloeosoma Wollaston, 1869 and Myosides formosanus Morimoto et Lee, 1993 as a junior synonym of Myosides marshalli (Heller, 1931) are proposed. Lectotypes of the following species are designated: Trachyodes horrescens Marshall, 1916; Trachyodes marshalli Heller, 1931; Trachyphloeophana buruana Heller, 1929; Trachyphloeops setosus Roleofs, 1873 and Trachyphloeosoma alternatum Marshall, 1916. Redescriptions of all Trachyodes and Trachyphloeosoma species and the genus Trachyodes are provided. The taxonomic position of Trachyodes is discussed. Trachyphloeosoma setosum Wollaston, 1869 is recorded from Taiwan for the first time. Male and female genitalia of most of the species are studied and illustrated for the first time. INTRODUCTION The study of eastern Trachyphloeini (Borovec 2003), of which this is the second part, provides in this paper redescriptions of all the known species of the genera Trachyodes Marshall, 1916 and Trachyphloeosoma Wollaston, 1869 and description of two new genera and three new species. -

Annotated checklist of the weevils (Curculionidae sensu lato ) of North America, Central America, and the West Indies (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) Charles W. O'Brien and Guillermo J. Wibmer INTRODUCTION This checklist treats the names of the 843 genera and 7,068 species (as well as their synonyms) currently recognized as valid that are found in the New World north of South America (except for those from Trinidad and Tobago which will be considered in a subsequent publication on South American Curculionidae sensu lato). The idea for a weevil checklist originated with Ross Arnett, Jr. as part of the North American Beetle Fauna Project. When this project was terminated in 1980, we decided to expand the scope of the checklist and publish it in an annotated form. While it owes its origin to the NABFP it is published independently of that organization. The checklists of the weevils of North America (Leng 1920, Leng and Mutchler 1927 and 1933, Blackwelder 1939, and Blackwelder and Blackwelder 1948), and of Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and South America (Blackwelder 1947) have become increasingly outdated because of numerous revisions and descriptions of new taxa. In this list we have added many new distribution records as well. We have attempted to follow the current classifications of most specialists, as published. For this reason the classification used here is not identical with that of the Coleopterorum Catalogus, the two checklists mentioned above, nor that used by Kissinger (1964). We have tried to verify all citations by checking original references and those "Not seen" are so marked in the bibliography. -

The time has come to offer the public a chance to have taxa named in their honour or in more crass terms for the public ‘to buy a scientific name’. This may sound distasteful to some people and some may be appalled at the suggestion but let me explain. At present, funding is very tight these days in the natural sciences and systematics is especially hard hit. Governments and universities are de-emphasizing whole organism sciences such as systematics and ecology yet I believe that at no time in the history of humanity has the need for systematics expertise been greater. In view of the increasing environmental impact of humanity, we must act soon if we are to properly inventory and conserve our biota. Biodiversity is our natural and cultural heritage and we depend upon it as a source of actual and potential resources, as important to maintaining ecosystem stability and functioning, and as a means of ensuring spiritual wellbeing. Wise management of biodiversity is a critical step in ensuring the continued survival and prosperity of the human species. In late October I introduced the idea of a fund, into which the public could make financial contributions, in the city of Ottawa daily newspaper and while I have not been swamped with calls, a number of people have contacted me asking for more information. -
