The primary motive for writing this article was in cooperation with a Slovak wood processing company, which wanted to improve its logistics processes and increase competitiveness in the wood processing sector through the implementation of new technologies. The aim of this article was to identify the positives and limitations of the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology into the wood processing industry, based on a secondary analysis of case studies and the best practice of American wood processing companies such as West Fraser Timber in Canada, and Weyerhaeuser in the USA. The selection of case studies was conditional on criteria of time relevance, size of the sawmills, and production volume in m3. These conditional criteria reflected the conditions for the introduction of similar concepts for wood-processing enterprises in Slovakia. The implementation of the IoT can reduce operating costs by up to 20%, increase added value for customers, and collect real-time data that can serve as the basis for support of management and decision-making at the operational, tactical, and strategic levels.

WAREHOUSE INDIRECT SOURCE RULE – WAREHOUSE ACTIONS AND INVESTMENTS TO REDUCE EMISSIONS (WAIRE) PROGRAM (a) Purpose The purpose of this rule is to reduce local and regional emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, and to facilitate local and regional emission reductions associated with warehouses and the mobile sources attracted to warehouses in order to assist in meeting state and federal air quality standards for ozone and fine particulate matter. (b) Applicability This rule applies to owners and operators of warehouses located in the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) jurisdiction with greater than or equal to 100,000 square feet of indoor floor space in a single building. (c) Definitions For the purpose of this rule, the following definitions shall apply: (1) ALTERNATIVE ENERGY GENERATION EQUIPMENT means systems at a warehouse facility capable of generating electricity without the use of diesel or gasoline. (2) ALTERNATIVE-FUELED VEHICLE means a vehicle or engine which is not powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. (3) ALTERNATIVE FUELING STATION means fuel dispensing equipment for alternative-fueled vehicles. (4) CLASS 2B TRUCK means a truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 8,501 to 10,000 pounds. (5) CLASS 3 TRUCK means a truck with a GVWR of 10,001 to 14,000 pounds. (6) CLASS 4 TRUCK means a truck with a GVWR of 14,001 to 16,000 pounds.
