He argues that a foundationalist, rationalist theory of a priori justication is indispensable for a coherence theory. BonJour (1998) continues this theme, arguing that a traditional account of a priori justication is indispensable for the justication of putative a priori truths, the justication of any non-observational belief and the justication of reasoning itself. While BonJour’s indispensability arguments have received some critical discussion (Gendler 2001; Harman 2001; Beebe 2008), no one has inves- tigated the indispensability arguments from a coherentist perspective. This perspec- tive offers a fruitful take on BonJour’s arguments, because he does not appreciate the depth of the coherentist alternative to the traditional empiricist-rationalist debate. -

Coherence, Truth, and the Development of Scientific Knowledge* Paul Thagard†‡ What is the relation between coherence and truth? This paper rejects numerous answers to this question, including the following: truth is coherence; coherence is irrelevant to truth; coherence always leads to truth; coherence leads to probability, which leads to truth. I will argue that coherence of the right kind leads to at least approximate truth. The right kind is explanatory coherence, where explanation consists in describing mech- anisms. We can judge that a scientific theory is progressively approximating the truth if it is increasing its explanatory coherence in two key respects: broadening by explaining more phenomena and deepening by investigating layers of mechanisms. I sketch an explanation of why deepening is a good epistemic strategy and discuss the prospect of deepening knowledge in the social sciences and everyday life. 1. Introduction. The problem of the relation between coherence and truth is important for philosophy of science and for epistemology in general. Many epistemologists maintain that epistemic claims are justified, not by a priori or empirical foundations, but by assessing whether they are part of the most coherent account (see, e.g., Bonjour 1985; Harman 1986; Lehrer 1990). A major issue for coherentist epistemology concerns whether we are ever warranted in concluding that the most coherent account is true. In the philosophy of science, the problem of coherence and truth is part of the ongoing controversy about scientific realism, the view that science aims at and to some extent succeeds in achieving true theories. The history of science is replete with highly coherent theories that have turned out to be false, which may suggest that coherence with empirical evidence is a poor guide to truth. -

Immanuel Kant’s Theory of Knowledge: Exploring the Relation between Sensibility and Understanding Wendell Allan Marinay Kant’s critique of reason does not provide an ultimate justification of knowledge, is not the last word in philosophy but is an initial thesis aimed at successfully solving the challenge posed by two warring schools of thought during Kant’s time: empiricism and rationalism.1 Following the ancient-Greek’s nothing-in-the-mind-without-passing-through-the- senses (Aristotle), Immanuel Kant’s inquiry of knowledge starts with the things “seen” or “experienced.”2 Such inquiry entails the materials and a process by which there can (probably) be known. It probes into or upon the constitution of human reason – an epistemic investigation from within yet necessarily involving from without. This is so because “in the mind we have the pure forms of sensible intuition and the pure concepts of an object in general. Extraneous to the mind we have the unknown and unknowable source of the matter for these forms, the source of that out of which our contentful experience is made.”3 Kant mentions two faculties of the mind that are involved in the knowing process, namely, sensibility and understanding. “He distinguishes between the receptive faculty of sensibility, through which we have intuitions, and the active faculty of understanding, which is the source of concepts.”4 Through the former, the objects are “given” while 1 Otfried Höffe. Three Kinds of Coherentism
THREE KINDS OF COHERENTISM Jaap Hage* [email protected] Abstract This paper aims to show what makes coherentism attractive in comparison to its main competitor, foundationalism. It also aims to show that constraint satisfaction is not the most attractive way to give content to the notion of coherence. In order to achieve these purposes, the paper distinguishes between epistemic, constructive and integrated coherentism. Epistemic coherentism treats coherence as a test for knowledge about a world which exists independently (ontological realism). Constructive coherentism uses coherence as a standard to determine what the facts are in a particular domain. This is a form of ontological idealism. Usually, both epistemic and constructive coherentism apply the coherence test to only part of the positions (beliefs etc.) which a person accepts. The definition of and standards for coherence, just as usually logic and standards for belief revision are kept outside the process of making a position set coherent. Integrated coherentism differs by including everything in the coherence creating process. A set of positions is integratedly coherent if and only if it satisfies the standards included in the set of positions itself. The paper argues that integrated coherentism best fits with the ideas underlying coherentism and that it is incompatible with coherence as constraint satisfaction in a strict sense. Blumberg and Herbert Feigl to a set of philosophical ideas put forward by the Vienna circle. Synonymous expressions include "consistent empiricism," "logical empiricism," "scientific empiricism," and "logical neo-positivism." The name logical positivism is often, but misleadingly, used more broadly to include the "analytical" or "ordinary language philosophies developed at Cambridge and Oxford. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The logical positivists thought of themselves as continuing a nineteenth-century Viennese empirical tradition, closely linked with British empiricism and culminating in the antimetaphysical, scientifically oriented teaching of Ernst Mach. In 1907 the mathematician Hans Hahn, the economist Otto Neurath, and the physicist Philipp Frank, all of whom were later to be prominent members of the Vienna circle, came together as an informal group to discuss the philosophy of science. They hoped to give an account of science which would do justice -as, they thought, Mach did not- to the central importance of mathematics, logic, and theoretical physics, without abandoning Mach's general doctrine that science is, fundamentally, the description of experience. As a solution to their problems, they looked to the "new positivism" of Poincare; in attempting to reconcile Mach and Poincare; they anticipated the main themes of logical positivism. In 1922, at the instigation of members of the "Vienna group," Moritz Schlick was invited to Vienna as professor, like Mach before him (1895-1901), in the philosophy of the inductive sciences. Schlick had been trained as a scientist under Max Planck and had won a name for himself as an interpreter of Einstein's theory of relativity. -

PHI 515: Topics in the History of Philosophy Hendrik Lorenz and Benjamin Morison Galen’s Outline of Empiricism In this short treatise, Galen provides a fairly detailed presentation of the views of an ancient medical school according to which medical knowledge, the knowledge by possessing which one is a medical doctor, is just a matter of experience, without reason, conceived of as a power to grasp imperceptible essences or natures of things, playing any role either in the constitution or in the formation of such knowledge. We want to understand this way of thinking about medical knowledge in its own right by carefully studying Galen’s treatise. But we also want to study it in the broader context of ancient theories and debates about the nature of expert knowledge. Medical Empiricism needs to be understood in part as a reaction to the high-powered theoretical conceptions of reason introduced or relied on by Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics, to the effect that reason is a power to grasp imperceptible natures of things and to grasp imperceptible relations such as logical consequence and incompatibility. But it also needs to be understood as presupposing and building on a tradition of thinkers who held that expert knowledge was just a matter of observation, memory, and experience, like Polus (Aristotle, Metaphysics A 1, 981a3-5) and Alcmaeon of Croton (?) (Phaedo 96 b). In fact, Medical Empiricism is the most fully articulated or anyhow the best- preserved example of this tradition that is available to us. Another kind of context that is relevant background to a study of Medical Empiricism is the context of debates among it and its rival medical schools, namely various forms of Rationalism, and Methodism. -

Augustine's Mathematical Realism Paul J. Zwier Calvin College Let me begin by giving a descriptive statement about what I take “Mathematical Realism” to be. Some philosophers of mathematics may identify the view as “mathematical Platonism.” I prefer the terminology “mathematical realism” as to avoid the prejudicial connotations which some might have regarding views held by Greek philosophers. Mathematical Realism is the view that certain mathematical statements are true because they successfully refer to entities which exist independently of the human mind and describe relationships which indeed, do exist between them. We, humans, can discover such true relationships between these entities. Some implications which are often drawn from this view are as follows: 1. In ontology and metaphysics: There are non-material objects. 2. In Philosophy of Mind and in Epistemology: The human mind has some kind of primitive intuition which accounts for the ability of humans to discover relationships between these non-material objects. I am sure that you are all aware of the fact that mathematical realism is not getting a very good “press” these days. It is true that those engaged in the practice of mathematics favor realism; at least psychologically. But many mathematicians retreat to formalism when they are asked to given an account of the nature of the objects under consideration in mathematics. But what is the case against mathematical realism? I shall summarize. The case has been given many times in the philosophical literature. An especially good example is the work of Philip Kitcher. He tries to show what tensions are involved in realism in a paper entitled The Plight of the Platonist which appeared in the journal Nous Volume 12, 1978, pages 119-134. -
