E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Two genera and 5 species within the subfamily Apocleinae Papavero, 1973 are recorded from South Korea. New records include: Philodicus integer (Macquart, 1846), Promachus anicius (Walker, 1849), Promachus chinensis Ricardo, 1920 and Promachus nigribarbatus (Becker, 1925). The genus Philodicus Loew is a new record for the area. Drawings of diagnostic features, a checklist, key and descriptions are included. Key words: Diptera, Asilidae, Apocleinae, robber flies, check-list, new records, Philodicus, Promachus, South Korean species Introduction This study provides a faunistic overview of the subfamily Apocleinae from South Korea. Young (2005, 2006, 2007a, 2007b) has covered the subfamilies Stenopogoninae Hull, 1962, Asilinae Latreille, 1802, Laphriinae Macquart, 1838 and Stichopogoninae Hardy, 1930. Previous records of the species of the subfamily Apo- cleinae (Entomological Society of Korea) from South Korea include only Promachus yesonicus Bigot, 1887, a widespread Oriental species. Keys, a checklist, photographs and English language discussions of identifying characteristics for the South Korean species are provided for the first time. TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

K N O P P4 Promachus dimidiatus Curran (Figs. 1, 2) is a large grassland robber fly native to western North America, and ranging from southern Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan west to Alberta and south to Utah, New Mexico, Kansas and Wisconsin (Fisher and Wilcox 1997; Cannings 2014). Box 861161, St. Augustine, Florida 32086, USA, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Of the approximately 58,000 plus prey records in the Asilidae Predator-Prey Database, 9.1% are Hemiptera (3.5% Heteroptera and 5.6% Homoptera). Forty six of the 133 recognized worldwide Hemiptera families are preyed upon with generally more prey records for female than male robber flies. Potential explanations for robber flies, in particular females, preying upon Hemiptera are discussed. Numbers of Hemiptera prey are examined based on their associated families, genera and species. Hemiptera prey are also discussed in relation to robber fly subfamilies and genera. New records of Hemiptera prey are presented and compared with prey records in the Database. Keywords: Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Homoptera, prey, robber flies, Diptera, Asilidae INTRODUCTION The Hemiptera, the largest order of hemimetabolous insects consisting of approximately 70,000 to 80,000 plus described species (Meyer, 2008), occur worldwide. Traditionally the Hemiptera are divided into two suborders, the Heteroptera and Homoptera, although some taxonomists believe that the Coleorrhyncha, Stenorrhyncha and Auchenorryncha also are suborders. -

An additional seven which may occur are included. Keys to subfamilies, genera and species are given. Two subfamilies and twenty-five genera are represented. A discussion of specific identification, habitat, and distribution is given where possible. The Laphria canis complex, index complex, and aeatus complex are discussed. One new species, Laphria calvescenta is described. Laphria disparella has been raised from synonymy. Machimus virginicus was removed from Asilus sensu-latu and placed in the genus Machimus. -

Female Asilidae deposit Robber flies (Insecta: Diptera: Asilidae) comprise a white/yellow/brown eggs on low-lying plants and grasses, large and widespread family of insects. The adults are in sand or in crevices within soil, bark, or wood. Egg- often active flies of considerable size and readily attract laying habits depend on the species and their attention (Geller-Grimm, 2005). Asilid adults attack morphological adaptations; most species deposit eggs in insects of almost all orders, from wasps, bees, and flies groups in the soil or inserted into plant parts; a few to dragonflies and grasshoppers; even some spiders are deposit their eggs in masses, which are then covered with eaten (Lavigne et al., 1978; Lavigne, 2001). -
