Air Quality Modelling studies CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION Contents of this Chapter shall be: Purpose of the Report, Identification of Project & Project proponent, Brief description of nature, size, location of the Project and its importance to the region and to the country, Scope of the study or TOR. 1.1 Introduction M/s. M R N Cane Power India Ltd., is an agro based Company with a proposal to manufacture sugar, power and allied products. The company proposes to establish 5000 TCD sugar, 35 MW cogeneration power plant and 65 KLPD molasses based distillery at Kallapur village, Kulageri Hobli, Badami Taluk, Bagalkot, Karnataka, hereafter referred as This Industry TI for brevity. The sugar unit generates large quantities byproducts viz. bagasse, molasses and press mud. To be economically and environmentally sustainable it is necessary for the sugar industries to convert these by-products into value-added products, and hence this is done. The plant is a new establishment. The raw material, molasses and bagasse generated from the sugar plant will be utilized in the proposed distillery and power plant, respectively. EC proposal was made on 17th December 2014, as per Notification 2006. Thus, Table No. 1.1: Proposed Production Details Sl. O. 1533 promulgated on 14th September 2006 has categorized, ≥ 5000 TCD sugar under category-B of schedule 5(j), 35 MW Co-gen under category-B of schedule 1(d) and 65 KLPD distillery based on molasses is categorized under Category–A Schedule 5 (g). MoEF, New Delhi has considered the proposal in the 32nd EAC meeting dated 20th -21st January, 2015. A letter prescribing 49 -point TOR Scoping dated 31st March 2015 (including both A & B categories of Industry as above) was received and accordingly draft EIA is prepared.

    11.13 KARNATAKA 11.13.1 Introduction Karnataka, the seventh largest State of the country, with a geographical area of 1,91,791 sq km accounts for 5.83% of the geographical area of the country. The State is located in the south western region of India and lies between 11°30' N to 18°30' N latitudes and 74°00' E to 78°30' E longitudes and is bordered by Maharashtra and Goa in the North, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the east, Kerala & Tamil Nadu on the South and the Arabian Sea on the West. The State can be divided into two distinct physiographic regions viz the 'Malnad' or hilly region comprising Western Ghats and 'Maidan' or plain region comprising the inland plateau of varying heights. The average annual rainfall varies from 2,000 mm to 3,200 mm and the average annual temperature between 25°C and 35°C. The Western Ghats, which has an exceptionally high level of biological diversity and endemism, covers about 60% of forest area of the State. East flowing rivers in Karnataka mainly Cauvery & Krishna along with its tributaries drain into Bay of Bengal and west flowing rivers mainly Sharavathi & Kali drain into Arabian Sea. The State has 30 districts, amongst which 5 are tribal and 6 are hill districts. As per the 2011 census, Karnataka has a population of 61.13 million, which is 5.05% of India's population. The rural and urban populations constitute 61.43% and 38.57% respectively. Tribal population is 6.96% of the State's population.

Post oil crises shifted the focus of energy planners towards renewable resources and energy conservation. Biomass accounts for nearly 33% of a developing country’s energy needs. In India, it meets about 75% of the rural energy needs. In Karnataka, non-commercial energy sources like firewood, agricultural residues, charcoal and cowdung account for 53.2%. The energy released by the reaction of organic carbon (of bioresources) with oxygen is referred as bioenergy. Bioresource availability is highly diversified and it depends on the region’s agro-climatic conditions. Inventorying of these resources is required for describing the quality, quantity, change, productivity, condition of bio resources and requirement in a given area. The present study assesses talukwise bioresource status across the agro-climatic zones of Karnataka, considering the bioenergy availability (from agriculture, horticulture, forests and plantations) and sector-wise energy demand (domestic, agriculture, industry, etc.).

    Prof. Y. H. Nayakwadi Professor & Chairman BIO-DATA Dr. Y. H. Nayakwadi is currently working as a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Studies in History, University of Mysore. He was born in 1964 and educated in Gulbarga, Mysore and Cambridge. He has obtained Ph.D. degree from the Gulbarga University and Post-Doctoral from the Cambridge University. He has worked fruitfully in the fields of Medieval South India, Modern India and Hyderabad Karnataka. He has served for Twenty six years in Gulbarga University, Mysore University and Cambridge University. He was visiting Fellow in the Cambridge University U.K. Since 1990, for almost three decades he has been actively involved in historical research and teaching presenting seven international papers at Scotland, Sweden, England and India.
