Catholic Press Awards 2017 Winning Entries A01: BEST EXAMPLE OF EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING PROMOTION ORIGINATING WITH THE PUBLICATION OR PUBLICATION'S WEBSITE First Place Northwest Catholic, “2016-2017 Directory” by Keri Hake The promotional materials were very unified. The messages were clear and purposeful. The evidence was good. Second Place Rhode Island Catholic, “Festivals” by Richard Lafond This submission's email message is clear, readable and obviously target to the stated audience. The pre-section ads are clean and clear, too. Revenue is not that high, but the sample indicates that the intended audience responded to this prompt. Good work. Third Place Rhode Island Catholic, “Catholic Schools Week” by Richard Lafond There are some AP style errors on the flyer and its colors could contrast more. The CSW publication itself seems balanced between ads and editorial space. A02a: BEST SINGLE AD ORIGINATING WITH THE PUBLICATION: Black and White Ad First Place Catholic Voice, “It's not black and white” by John Bosco Timely message and effort. Very good image, copy, size, message and call to action. Well done. Second Place Arlington Catholic Herald, “Saint Faustina Drama” by Ashleigh Buyers, Advertising staff Very good and eye catching illustration. Clear message. A little text heavy, but generally very well done. Catholic Press Awards 2017 Winning Entries Third Place The Catholic Sun, “Radio Family Rosary” by Mick Welsh, Graphic Designer Really good and eye-catching photo used in this ad. A02b: BEST SINGLE AD ORIGINATING WITH THE PUBLICATION: Color Ad First Place The Dialog, “ ‘I know he loved me’ Cemeteries ad” by Virginia Durkin O'Shea Good use of color and white space. Good Biblical reference. Second Place The Tablet, “Reconciliation Monday - Lent 2016” by Israel Ochoa Very good art direction and copywriting. Good use of Pope Francis' langage to make a solid point. Clean. Clear call to action. Third Place SALUTE, “A Call to the Faithful” by Taylor Henry, Jo Ann Redmond Clean, clear, direct, persuasive message. The "not on CFC" is especially important for one segment of the audience and could generate the requested action specifically from them. The “support our troops message” should resonate with a much broader audience. This has the pieces of a successful ad. Honorable Mentions The Catholic University of America Magazine, “Discover Catholic University” by Jackie Malcolm and Narguess Moasser The Tablet, “Put Him on Your List This Christmas 2016” by Shartina Thompson Catholic Press Awards 2017 Winning Entries A04: BEST PRINT CIRCULATION PROMOTION CAMPAIGN First Place The Florida Catholic, Orlando Edition, “Florida Catholic circulation campaign” by Florida Catholic staff No doubt what the campaign was attempting via its direct message. Multifaceted, planned and well-executed campaign. Cohesive. Clean. Clear. Good call to action. Good effort (checklists, etc.). Good explanations. Good incentives. Excellent results data provided. Second Place St. Louis Review, “We are there with you” by Staff This entry's visuals and depth of message are exceptional and timely considering that good journalism needs more focus these days. Spanish language materials are very good, but unclear if there's a Spanish language version of the STL Review or if it's just a poster in Spanish. Call to action a little buried (visual hunt for the "subscribe now" and site on posters). Good circulation and engagement data. A05: BEST MEDIA KIT CREATED IN 2016 First Place The Florida Catholic, Orlando Edition, “Florida Catholic Media Kit” by Mike Carlock, Michael Jimenez and Jane Radetsky Very well done. Good attention to detail. Clean. Neat. Good readership info. Complete--no questions unanswered. Second Place Catholic New York, “Digital Media Kit 2017” by Matt Schiller, Leah Bossio and Staff Very well done. Clean. Neat. Legible. Cohesive. A couple of odd font shifts and some repetitive copy, but excellent readership and diocesan statistical info. Catholic Press Awards 2017 Winning Entries Third Place El Pregonero, “Media Kit” by Javier Diaz Very clean and neat. Good information. Watch column alignment. A06: BEST LOCAL RETAIL CAMPAIGN ORIGINATING WITH THE PUBLICATION First Place Arlington Catholic Herald, “The Irish Walk” by Ashleigh Buyers, Advertising staff Very well done. Fits category well. Good consistency of size, placement, font and style. Great photography. Clear message. Second Place Rhode Island Catholic, “The Golden Lamb Buttery” by Richard Lafond and Laura Kilgus Clear messaging. Welcoming. Kind of text heavy and busy. Eyes drawn to photo and then to the Mother's Day part, so it’s easy to skip the anniversary and prix fixe info. Third Place Rhode Island Catholic, “Aunt Carrie's” by Richard Lafond and Laura Kilgus Good consistency in size and look. Very good photos. Very text heavy, but good use of $-off on the lobster roll ad. Honorable Mention Arlington Catholic Herald, “The Paschal Lamb” by Ashleigh Buyers, David Garcia and advertising staff Catholic Press Awards 2017 Winning Entries A07: BEST PROMOTIONAL HOUSE AD First Place Catholic News Herald, “Don't blend in; A reason to chirp; Don't wait on the mail; Stand out; It's easy being green” by Stephen Guilfoyle and Tim Faragher Excellent use of a consistent theme with appropriate variable encoding. Selected paper and tablet stories grow naturally from the headline. Honorable Mentions St. Louis Review, “We are there with you” by Staff Clarion Herald, “Clarion Herald Pilgrimage” by Lloyd Robichaux Catholic Press Awards 2017 Winning Entries A08a: BEST BLOG: Group or Association Blog First Place The Visitor, “From the Heart: A Catholic Blog for Central Minnesota” coordinated by Kristi Anderson This blog has a good balance of local, national, and international stories. It demonstrated the ways to integrate Catholicism into everyday life. Diverse articles demonstrate that faith can be something that weaves through all aspects of life. They delve into difficult topics, such as reviewing a film about Clergy abuse. They also cover recipes, aging, grief, travel, social media/Internet, etc. They have a very easy search function where I could find posts by month. The writing is high quality. Second Place “CatholicMom.com” by Lisa M. Hendey and Barbara Szyszkiewicz This blog covered a wide range of subjects including: baby name suggestions, holiday specials, service trip information, book reviews, grief, technology, etc. There was an abundance of content, which made evaluating each article nearly impossible, but demonstrates a commitment to the blog and to providing the readers with interesting and diverse content. Third Place “Unbound Blog” by Jordan Kimbrell and Maureen Lunn, editors The Unbound blog tells stories from all over the world and about people of different genders, age groups, etc. This blog serves its purpose of exposing readers to the beneficiaries of Unbound's work and donations and helping their audience to feel a personal connection to the subjects. Honorable Mentions C-Fam, “International Youth Coalition” by Marianna Orlandi, Ph.D. C-Fam, “Turtle Bay and Beyond” by Marianna Orlandi, Ph.D. Catholic Press Awards 2017 Winning Entries A08b: BEST BLOG: Publication Blog First Place National Catholic Reporter, “NCR Today” by NCR staff and contributors This blog does a good job drawing connections between current events and political debates and the true values of Catholicism. "Morning briefings" make sure their regular readers always have access to a quick and digestible recap of important current events. Strong messages of understanding, community engagement, and fighting against fear and hate. There are a few very strong political messages and some harsh language that may upset some readers, but overall quality is high and the content very powerful and timely. Second Place The Leaven, “The Walking Deadline” by Anita McSorley, Joe Bollig, Moira Cullings, Todd Habiger, Beth Blankenship and Jill Ragar Esfeld Covers a variety of topics including: spotlights on community members, school spirit, Catholic schools, etc. Written in a conversational tone, which makes posts easy to read and accessible for a wide range of audiences. Third Place Arlington Catholic Herald, “Irish soda bread or tea cake?” by Ann M. Augherton This article is not academic or sales-y. It was simply the first-person telling of a typical experience. I liked the reference to the shift from the old cookbooks to the use of an iPad and other aspects of the author's life that others would be able to connect to. The nostalgia that the bread brought about for the author (in particular, memories of a grandmother) were very touching. A08c: BEST BLOG: By Layperson First Place National Catholic Reporter, “Young Voices” by April Gutierrez, Brian Harper, Michael Jordan Laskey, Jennifer Mertens, Jocelyn A. Sideco and Nicole Sotelo Compared to other blogs, this one has much more variety in content.
