Athenians and Eleusinians in the West Pediment of the Parthenon
ATHENIANS AND ELEUSINIANS IN THE WEST PEDIMENT OF THE PARTHENON (PLATE 95) T HE IDENTIFICATION of the figuresin the west pedimentof the Parthenonhas long been problematic.I The evidencereadily enables us to reconstructthe composition of the pedimentand to identify its central figures.The subsidiaryfigures, however, are rath- er more difficult to interpret. I propose that those on the left side of the pediment may be identifiedas membersof the Athenian royal family, associatedwith the goddessAthena, and those on the right as membersof the Eleusinian royal family, associatedwith the god Posei- don. This alignment reflects the strife of the two gods on a heroic level, by referringto the legendary war between Athens and Eleusis. The recognition of the disjunctionbetween Athenians and Eleusinians and of parallelism and contrastbetween individualsand groups of figures on the pedimentpermits the identificationof each figure. The referenceto Eleusis in the pediment,moreover, indicates the importanceof that city and its majorcult, the Eleu- sinian Mysteries, to the Athenians. The referencereflects the developmentand exploitation of Athenian control of the Mysteries during the Archaic and Classical periods. Epigtoaphic Bulletin for Greek Religion 1996 (EBGR 1996) The ninth issue of the BEGR contains only part of the epigraphie harvest of 1996; unforeseen circumstances have prevented me and my collaborators from covering all the publications of 1996, but we hope to close the gaps next year. We have also made several additions to previous issues. In the past years the BEGR had often summarized publications which were not primarily of epigraphie nature, thus tending to expand into an unavoidably incomplete bibliography of Greek religion. From this issue on we return to the original scope of this bulletin, whieh is to provide information on new epigraphie finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, epigraphieal corpora, and studies based p;imarily on the epigraphie material. Only if we focus on these types of books and articles, will we be able to present the newpublications without delays and, hopefully, without too many omissions. -
Cult and Crisis: a GIS Approach to the Sacred Landscape of Hellenistic Attica

Parts of the Athenian countryside and even the city itself were occupied by foreign troops. This loss of control affected the city’s political, economic, social, cultural, and religious life. Since Cleisthenic times, relations between political units and religious communities had become institutionalised through specific cults. Other cult places of relevance to the larger community and therefore with a catchment area that exceeded a deme, e.g. Eleusis, were also affected, as they lay within the occupied territories. This partial inaccessibility of the countryside risked the disruption of religious duties. The project “Cult and Crisis: The Sacred Landscape of Attica and its Correlation to Political Topography” aims to identify potentially affected cult places with no limitations regarding their possible catchment area by analysing their placement in relation to foreign military bases. Alterations in cult practice can plausibly be detected in changes ranging from cessation to the rerouting of ritual movement or the establishment of substitute cult places. As these “solutions” rarely feature in written sources, our GIS-based approach will focus on material remains from sanctuaries. Although an object’s use for ritual practice cannot be deduced with certainty, the distribution of finds certainly attests to human activity. This contribution presents a trial of this approach, taking the Sounion area as its case study. -

THE ELEUSINIAN MYSTERIES OF DEMETER AND PERSEPHONE: Fertility, Sexuality, ancl Rebirth Mara Lynn Keller The story of Demeter and Persephone, mother and daugher naturc goddesses, provides us with insights into the core beliefs by which earl) agrarian peoples of the Mediterranean related to “the creative forces of thc universe”-which some people call God, or Goddess.’ The rites of Demetei and Persephone speak to the experiences of life that remain through all time< the most mysterious-birth, sexuality, death-and also to the greatest niys tery of all, enduring love. In these ceremonies, women and inen expressec joy in the beauty and abundance of nature, especially the bountiful harvest in personal love, sexuality and procreation; and in the rebirth of the humail spirit, even through suffering and death. Cicero wrote of these rites: “Wc have been given a reason not only to live in joy, but also to die with bettei hope. ”2 The Mother Earth religion ceIebrated her children’s birth, enjoyment of life and loving return to her in death. The Earth both nourished the living and welcomed back into her body the dead. As Aeschylus wrote in TIic Libation Bearers: Yea, summon Earth, who brings all things to life and rears, and takes again into her womb.3 I wish to express my gratitude for the love and wisdom of my mother, hlary 1’. The Eleusinian Mysteries

Sasha Chaitow) Paper Presented at the 7th Esoteric Quest Conference on The Mysteries and Philosophies of Antiquity, Samothrace, September 2008 Our topic is the Eleusinian Mysteries, perhaps one of the best-known mystery cults of all time. They are rooted in a very ancient time, long before the city state of Athens or the official worship of the Olympian Gods ever existed. Despite this, they have retained their sacrality and commanded respect within various eras and cultures, almost as if they have their own secret and magical way of evoking something in the soul or subconscious of man. I am not sure which term to use – the citizen of classical Greece, Imperial Rome, Enlightenment Europe or even our own Digital reality. There is a host of very proliferous narratives and legends around the theme of these Mysteries. Yet their accuracy is questionable since true initiates took a heavy oath of silence bestowed by the goddess herself. So let us try to make sense of what information we do have. What and When In one prophecy to the Athenians relating to the worship of Dionysus Elefthereos – Latinised to Pater Liber - the Delphi oracle reminded the citizens that the god had returned to the city together with Demeter during the reign of the King of Athens Pandion. The goddess did not stay, but went to Eleusis where she was received by King Keleos. This prophecy would put the inception of the Eleusinian Mysteries at around the 13th century BC. However, it is more or less certain that they actually date to the Minoan period when the worship of the Great Goddess predominated. -

Lecture 12 Good morning and welcome to LLT121 Classical Mythology. When last we left off, we were talking about the journey of the goddess Demeter to find her daughter, Persephone. If I recall correctly, when we left off, Persephone had been carried away by Hades. Demeter searched for her daughter, Persephone, for ten days, carrying torches in her hands. At the end of the tenth day, the goddess, Hecate, influential underworld goddess, said "Demeter, your daughter has been carried away by Hades. She was screaming. She did not want to go. It was a very bad scene." Helios, influential sun god, was the second deity to report to Demeter. "Demeter, your daughter, Persephone, has been stolen, but don't worry. Hades stole her. Hades is a very important god. He's the underworld god. He's not exactly chopped liver." One would think that the average mother or father upon finding out where the missing daughter was would drop everything, go down to Hades—remember, Demeter is a goddess—grab him by his scrawny little collar and shake him within an inch of his life saying, "Give me my daughter back." It doesn't happen that way for two reasons. Reason number one is that we're talking about a patriarchal society, in which property is passed on from father to son. Cities are ruled by kings and so forth. A mother does not have the right to say who her daughter marries. That's reserved for the father. Reason number two why Demeter does not run down immediately is: the story doesn't work out that way. -

The rural landscape of Neopalatial Kythera: a GIS perspective Andrew Bevan Postprint of 2002 paper in Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology 15.2: 217-256 (doi: 10.1558/jmea.v15i2.217). Abstract Intensive archaeological survey on the island of Kythera (Greece) has revealed, in unprecedented detail, a landscape of dispersed rural settlements dating to the mid-second millennium BC. This paper deploys a series of GIS and spatial analysis techniques to illuminate the way this landscape was structured, in terms of social organisation, agriculture and island demography. Discussion begins by quantifying site numbers, size and hierarchy. It then examines patterns of settlement dispersal, highlighting the subsistence strategies probably underpinning such a landscape. Emphasis is placed on reconstructing where possible the dynamics of colonisation and the motivations behind site location. A final section proposes population figures for the island and considers a range of site-level interactions. 1. Introduction This paper engages with the space-time dynamics of a particular prehistoric Mediterranean countryside. It combines a variety of GIS-driven techniques with the results of intensive archaeological survey. Over the last 10 years, there has been an increasing interest in the Mediterranean rural past (e.g. Doukelis and Mendoni 1994; Barker and Mattingly 1999-2000; Horden and Purcell 2000). Research has embraced many academic disciplines, including demography, climatology, geomorphology, ethnography and archaeology, but has frequently occurred under the umbrella of intensive landscape survey. In the Aegean, this has resulted in a host of analyses, including synthetic discussions (van Andel and Runnels 1987; Halstead and Frederick 2000), and period-specific investigations.
