  • When Is the Best Time to Go to Hong Kong?
Page 1 of 98 Chris’ Copyrights @ 2011 When Is The Best Time To Go To Hong Kong? Winter Season (December - March) is the most relaxing and comfortable time to go to Hong Kong but besides the weather, there's little else to do since the "Sale Season" occurs during Summer. There are some sales during Christmas & Chinese New Year but 90% of the clothes are for winter. Hong Kong can get very foggy during winter, as such, visit to the Peak is a hit-or-miss affair. A foggy bird's eye view of HK isn't really nice. Summer Season (May - October) is similar to Manila's weather, very hot but moving around in Hong Kong can get extra uncomfortable because of the high humidity which gives the "sticky" feeling. Hong Kong's rainy season also falls on their summer, July & August has the highest rainfall count and the typhoons also arrive in these months. The Sale / Shopping Festival is from the start of July to the start of September. If the sky is clear, the view from the Peak is great. Avoid going to Hong Kong when there are large-scale exhibitions or ongoing tournaments like the Hong Kong Sevens Rugby Tournament because hotel prices will be significantly higher. CUSTOMS & DUTY FREE ALLOWANCES & RESTRICTIONS • Currency - No restrictions • Tobacco - 19 cigarettes or 1 cigar or 25 grams of other manufactured tobacco • Liquor - 1 bottle of wine or spirits • Perfume - 60ml of perfume & 250 ml of eau de toilette • Cameras - No restrictions • Film - Reasonable for personal use • Gifts - Reasonable amount • Agricultural Items - Refer to consulate Note: • If arriving from Macau, duty-free imports for Macau residents are limited to half the above cigarette, cigar & tobacco allowance • Aircraft crew & passengers in direct transit via Hong Kong are limited to 20 cigarettes or 57 grams of pipe tobacco.

  • Hong Kong, China: Learning to Belong to a Nation
Downloaded by [ISTEX] at 03:47 06 September 2013 Hong Kong, China The idea of “national identity” is an ambiguous one for Hong Kong. Returned to the national embrace of China on 1 July 1997 after 150 years as a British colony, the concept of national identity and what it means to “belong to a nation” is a matter of great tension and contestation in Hong Kong. Written by three academic specialists on cultural identity, social history, and the mass media, this book explores the processes through which the people of Hong Kong are “learning to belong to a nation” by examining their shifting rela- tionship with the Chinese nation and state in the recent past, present, and future. It considers the complex meanings of and debates over national identity in Hong Kong over the past fifty years, especially during the last decade following the territory’s return to China. In doing so, the book takes a larger, global perspect- ive, exploring what Hong Kong teaches us about potential future transforma- tions of national identity in the world as a whole. Multidisciplinary in approach, Hong Kong, China examines national identity in terms of theory, ethnography, history, the mass media, and survey data, and will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese history, cultural studies, and nationalism. Visual cultures have been implicated in creative policies of the state and in global cultural networks (such as the art world, film festivals and the Internet), particularly since the emergence of digital technologies. Asia is home to some of the major film, television and video industries in the world, while Asian contemporary artists are selling their works for record prices at the international art markets. Visual communication and innovation is also thriving in transnational networks and communities at the grass-roots level. Asian Visual Cultures seeks to explore how the texts and contexts of Asian visual cultures shape, express and negotiate new forms of creativity, subjectivity and cultural politics. It specifically aims to probe into the political, commercial and digital contexts in which visual cultures emerge and circulate, and to trace the potential of these cultures for political or social critique. It welcomes scholarly monographs and edited volumes in English by both established and early-career researchers. Series Editors Jeroen de Kloet, University

  • Submission from the Hong Kong Regional Heliport Working Group
LC Paper No. CB(1)2099/04-05(02) For Immediate Release To: Editor, General News / Business / Environment A People Friendly Heliport for Hong Kong A Vibrant, Lively Harbour-front Facility for Residents and Visitors Alike (19 July 2005, Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Regional Heliport Working Group (RHWG) has responded to the public engagement call in the Envisioning Stage of the Harbour-front Enhancement Review (“HER”) for Wan Chai and adjoining areas initiated by the Harbour-front Enhancement Committee by submitting a creative proposal for a people friendly heliport near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Integrating perfectly with its surroundings and forming part of a vibrant and lively harbour-front off HKCEC, the proposed heliport is designed as a destination and a people place to be enjoyed by the residents of and visitors to Hong Kong. Besides catering for anticipated government and commercial single-engine helicopter usage, the Group’s submission envisages that the heliport will be a community amenity with the recycling and refurbishment of the existing ferry terminal into an exciting venue for visitors to Golden Bauhinia Square. ‘There is a rightful demand for the harbour-front to be returned to the people of Hong Kong,’ said Sandra Mak, RHWG spokesperson. ‘We heard that loudly and clearly from the 6 public forum meetings and 2 charettes hosted in the last month by the HEC in the current HER. We participated at all these meetings through which we listened carefully to the wishes of the community. We have also been conducting other public consultation activities.
