I am unable to use all of the articles as I have to keep the magazine to a strict weight for postage costs, but I shall be using said articles in future issues. I hope you are all enjoyed the last magazine and are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Autumn edition. I had some very good feedback at the Barbe Cruise, and was really thrilled with the response I got when I mingled with you. Not being a naturally sociable creature (I prefer sitting in a corner being unnoticed) I’m finding the job as Editor pushing me to my limits, but having said that at the Barbe Cruise those of you whom I have not had the pleasure of speaking to made it very easy for me, and all of you who I asked were more than happy for me to photograph you - so give yourselves a big round of applause. The day for me to travel to Beale Park on board panther is looming now, and when you get your magazines I hope we will be well on our way. I’m getting quite anxious at the prospect of going to London again, especially to travel on the Thames. The last time I did that journey was on board Duchess who was being tossed around like a little wooden bobbin. At one point the water washed over Duchess’s stern so fiercely, I thought she would sink. I then panicked at the prospect of being with an elderly dog with arthritis, an elderly man who couldn’t swim and the boatfuls of Oriental tourists who filmed me with a bucket lodged firmly between my legs. On a lighter note, I met Gavin Lawson the Editor of The Legger at the Braunstone Boat Show, and I loved the opening paragraph as I opened the professional glossy magazine: ‘I love real Ale’ After our introduction and a chat, Gavin and I agreed we would give each other a complimentary copy of our respective magazines. The Legger is the magazine of the Dudley Canal Trust and made for some very interesting reading. I briefly explained what Panther and the Coventry Canal Society did and felt very proud when I handed over our “going places” Coventry Canal magazine. In the next issue I will be taking you on a rather special journey, it will be the production of the C.C.S. magazine. Finally, as most of you know the Society has been broken into again and some of the boats unfortunately have been damaged. Please can we take care to make sure nothing at all of any value is left on board an empty boat. Thieves are looking for cash, anything with a street value and anything worth drinking . Please take any valuables home with you EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2010 Chair Allen Wilson 19 Jackers Road [email protected] COVENTRY CV2 1PH 024 7627 8362 Vice-Chair Vacant Secretary Tony Mann 5 Forryan Close [email protected] Cosby LEICESTER 07733 145314 LE9 1TS 0116 2861998 Assistant Secretary Vacant Treasurer Fraser Diesch 26 Castlewood Park [email protected] Hinckley Road Sapcote LEICESTER LE9 4JZ 01455 230096 Membership Secretary Brian Pope 7 Frampton Walk COVENTRY CV2 2JE 024 7661 4463 General Member 1 Vacant General Member 2 Steven Kingham 88 Lentons Lane (Harbourmaster) COVENTRY 07767 672460 CV2 1NW 024 7661 1299 General Member 3 Vic Rainsford 157 Milverton Road (Social Secretary) COVENTRY CV2 1GL 024 7661 9357 General Member 4 Dave Perkins 38 Wilsons Lane (Joint Property Manager) COVENTRY CV6 6AD 024 7636 3378 General Member 5 Nigel Wooltorton 11 Brayford Avenue (Canoe Club Chair) COVENTRY CV3 5BS 024 7641 8796 General Member 6 Robin Townshend 11 Judith Way (Joint Property Manager) Cawston RUGBY CV22 7FY 07825 223640 Magazine Editor Vivienne Pitts 18 Gimson Avenue [email protected] (non Committee Member) Cosby Leicestershire 07732 015 617 LE9 1SS 0116 286 5781 Paddlers Tales First of all I must welcome our new members. Membership numbers are creeping up and there has been plenty going on at the club. One change is that around half of our members are now junior paddlers. Not to be outdone by the kids, Doug, Jon and Andy have just completed their BCU 2star award at the canal basin. Part of the training included a trip from Warwick up to the Saxon Mill and back, all in glorious sunshine. Thanks to Mike for doing the assessment. This award is a good grounding in flat water techniques in both canoe and kayak. Well done guys! Andy has been busy recently. He paddled with Sam and others from Hawkesbury Junction out onto the Ashby Canal, stopping one night and then paddling back, a distance of 48 miles. Quite a paddle, in an open Canadian on the canal. For more information on this fund raising charity paddle have a look at this link; http://www.justgiving.co.uk/canoeingforcancer2010 Liam, Tom and Damo have been getting to grips with the white water on the course at Nottingham, with a couple of pleasant Friday evening paddles. They will be competing there in September in the Youth Freestyle event. The club recently hosted a West Midlands regional development meeting. This was a good opportunity to make contacts and put some faces to names. They have recently revamped their web site, so have a look at- www.canoe-englandwestmidlands.org.uk/ which is a useful resource for paddling. Other sites you may wish to try are www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk which has lots of news, videos and information on amongst other things white water and sea paddling. You can also look up “song of the paddle” for the canoe paddlers. I haven’t given the web address as I believe there were some changes taking place. We have been busy with lots of group sessions being run at the basin. Thank you to everyone that has helped. All the participants seem to have enjoyed themselves and are often amazed at the canal environment near the City Centre. I managed to escape for two days, sea kayaking off the coast of Anglesey on a course. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it may be something we consider as a group. The weather was kind and we went out to paddle some of the tidal races near South Stack Have a search for Penrhyn Mawr to find out more. In many ways these are just like extremely high volume rivers, except they flow in two directions and the waves go on for over a mile! The scenery was superb and there is nothing like stopping for lunch on a remote beach, backed by the cliffs. I was surprised at how clear the sea water was and took a couple of underwater shots with the club camera. This was another example of how diverse our sport really is. The Pool sessions start again in September so look out for information being circulated. They kick off at 7.45pm at President Kennedy School on the first the then second Tuesday of the month, when these fall in term time. Look out for information on paddling activities taking place and join in whenever you can. See you on the water. Through the ‘chair’ It seems quite some time since I last wrote my fore-word for your magazine and, as usual, we have been very active. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who attended the shows at Crick, Stoke Bruerne and the Historic boat Rally at Braunston, on behalf of the Coventry Canal Society, for their efforts.
