Bracken Fern (Pteridium Aquilinum (L.) Kuhn) Overgrowth on Dry Alpine Grassland Impedes Red List Orthoptera but Supports Local Orthopteran Beta Diversity

Kuhn) has become increasingly invasive in abandoned or undergrazed Alpine grasslands. Bracken stands are generally assumed to be poor in species, but there is still very little information about the impact on the fauna. We recorded Orthoptera communities of 24 sample plots with varying bracken cover. Compared to plots with only sparse or medium bracken cover, species richness was highly signifcantly lower in densely overgrown plots, while the former two did not difer markedly. Multivariate ordination analyses revealed gradients with unequal orthopteran communities, showing distinct patterns of bracken cover clustering. Based on indicator values, 13 of 23 Orthoptera species turned out to be signifcantly or marginally signifcantly associated with a single bracken cover stratum or a combination of two strata, whereby all nine Red List species were primarily restricted to sparse or medium bracken cover. However, some generalist species were found to favor denser bracken stands, such as Tettigonia viridissima, contributing to the local Orthoptera beta diversity. Our data suggest that ongoing rotational sheep grazing with temporary paddocks is regarded as the most preferable management system. However, selected parts of the study area, which have only sparse vegetation and no pressure of bracken or scrub overgrowth, are recommended to be alternately left ungrazed for a few years to allow for the coexistence of diferent successional stages. -

Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 62(2): 191–211. https://doi.org/10.3897/travaux.62.e48604 Abstract During 2013–2017, assemblages of bush-crickets and grasshoppers were surveyed in two neighbour- ing flysch mountains – Čergov Mts (48 sites) and Levočské vrchy Mts (62 sites) – in northern part of Western Carpathians. Species were sampled mostly at grasslands and forest edges along elevational gradient between 370 and 1220 m a.s.l. Within the entire area (ca 930 km2) we documented 54 species, representing 38% of Carpathian Orthoptera species richness. We found the same species number (45) in both mountain ranges with nine unique species in each of them. No difference in mean species rich- ness per site was found between the mountain ranges (mean ± SD = 12.5 ± 3.9). Elevation explained 2.9% of variation in site species richness. Elevation and mountain range identity explained 7.3% of assemblages composition. We found new latitudinal as well as longitudinal limits in the distribu- tion for several species. -

Figures and maps refer to those included in the catalan version. 338 PRESENTATION Catalonia is a country that is strategically located from a biogeographical point of view, a stone's throw from Mid-European and Mediterranean environments, washed by the Mediterranean, and going from a high mountain alpine environment to sub-desert steppes. In contrast to other countries, with flora and fauna composed of very few species, our nature is characterised by its great diversity and we enjoy an environment composed of very varied forms of life, adapted to quite different conditions. Our society, through its universities, institutes, administrations, specialists and nature lovers, has made a great effort to identify these species. However, a great deal of this knowledge is found in journals or books with a limited readership or dispersed in a great number of publications. They mostly concentrate on specific areas of the territory and often, the species have yet to be discovered. We need tools to facilitate the conservation and management of these species. Which are they? Where are they? How many individual members of the species are there? In which habitats? What are their needs? These are questions which are key to be able to offer the correct planning of the territory, of the natural areas and of human activities in general. The first annotated checklist of the long-horned Orthoptera (Ensi- fera) of Tuva and adjacent territories is presented. This list is based on numerous published and unpublished data. A total of 22 species belonging to 2 families, na- mely Tettigoniidae and Gryllidae, are known as occurring in Tuva. Six species are recorded from the region for the first time, namely Tettigonia cantans (Fuessly), Platycleis albopunctata (Goeze), Platycleis affinis Fieber (also new for the Asian part of Russia), Roeseliana fedtschenkoi (Saussure), Poecilimon intermedius (Fie- ber), Acheta domesticus (Linnaeus) (synanthrope). Montana tomini (Pylnov) is also mentioned for the southern part of Krasnoyarsk Region for the first time. Orthopteran insects as potential and preferred preys of the Red- footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus) in Hungary. – Ornis Hungarica 23(1): 48–57. Abstract Orthopterans play an important role in Red-footed Falcon diet, however, most studies focus only on its qualitative food composition, and less on quantitative composition and prefer- ences of the taxa identified as prey. During the present research, an extensive orthopterological investigation was carried out in the Red-footed Falcon study area, Vásárhelyi Plain (SE-Hungary) between 2006 and 2008. Grass- hoppers were sampled in their main habitats by sweep netting and pitfall trapping, and orthopterans were identi- fied in the food remnants collected from the nests, both artificial and natural ones. 26 species were detected dur- ing the field works, 18 species from the food remnants. Altogether 32 species were identified. Prey preference values for all species for each year were calculated. More than two thirds of the identified preys were Decticus verrucivorus, and nearly 20% were Tettigonia viridissima. Other common prey species were Melanogryllus de- sertus, Platycleis affinis, Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa, Calliptamus italicusand Gryllus campestris. Based on the prey prefe rence analysis, the most preferred species was Decticus verrucivorus with extreme high values, and the other preferred ones, overlapping with the previous list, were Platycleis affinis, Bicolorana bicolor, Tettigonia viridis- sima, Calliptamus italicus and Roeseliana roeselii. These results may help in the development of Red-footed Fal- con-friendly habitats through the application of habitat management favourable for the preferred prey species. -

This grasshopper species is endemic to North Korea and for the past 85 years was known only from a single holotype male. In the present study we describe the female Z. morii for the first time. A revised checklist of Orthoptera at Mount Baekdusan (also known as Changbaishan in China) is also provided. A new synonymy, Zubovskya longifurcula (Jin et al., 2011), syn. nov. for Zubovskya koreana Mistshenko, 1952 is proposed here. Sand grasslands, one of the most important orthopteran habitats, have become refuges for specialized, endangered species in much of Europe. Grassland patches of different sizes and levels of fragmentation within the Günyűi-homokvidék Natura 2000 site (HUFH20009) were restored in 2012. Here, we investigated the effects of changes to extended, opened, and less isolated sand grassland patches of the habitat network on rehabilitation of Orthoptera assemblages. Our main results showed: (1) species richness and relative frequency of sand habitat specialists were mainly driven by the proportion of bare soil surface (low vegetation cover), local extent of sand grassland patches, and fine fraction of the soil structure; (2) restoration of sand grasslands promotes the protection of several orthopteran species considered Vulnerable or Endangered in Europe; and (3) minimizing disturbance of the soil (no stump removal or soil tillage) during restoration is crucial for the enhancement of orthopteran populations related to sand grasslands.
