So, dogmas express the living and saving faith in Jesus Christ, the incarnated Son of God, and in his work or his saving care. In the mind of wide groups of people, there is a perception about dogmas that they entail a seclusion and rigidity of the spirit which does not allow humans to evolve on the knowledge scale of his fulfi lment, keeping them trapped between the limits of rigid schemes of thought. The understanding of the dogmas has nothing to do with their meaning proposed by the Church; from the Church’s point of view dogmas are understood by taking into account other coordinates and other signifi - cations. Father Staniloae used to say about dogmas that they represent “the doctrinal expression of the plan for salvation and glorifi cation of those who believe made through the Church by Christ and The Holy Spirit” (Dogmatic Orthodox Theology…). The Church must, for each generation of believers, emphasize the inexhaustible richness of the dogmas’ content and message, which become spiritual food for the man in search of a deep- er meaning for his existence. Since dogmas are defi ned in a concentrated and synthetic manner by the Church, they can’t be understood and ex- plored in their true depth by man alone, the seeker of true life, light, power and guidance. They must be clarifi ed, explained and highlighted to people; they will thus understand that dogmas are answers – always new – to the problems they face in their lives. These explanations of the dogmas cannot ignore at any moment the content of the Holy Scripture and Tradition on the basis of which the dogmas have been formulated. Theology would be devoid of any real content, legitimacy and cred- ibility if it did not have as a permanent mission the explaining and deep- EDITORIAL 7 TEOLOGIA The Mission of Theology... 3-4 \ 2010 ening of dogmas. Thereby, theology brings an indispensable and blessed service to the Church as a divine-human settlement for the salvation of all people, preparing them for salvation and eternal happy life in the Kingdom of The Holy Trinity. Thus, theology becomes a necessary and useful tool so that the Church can give testimony each time about life and salvation in Jesus Christ. Through its theology, the Church can endlessly deepen the unending wealth of the truths of faith, or of dogmas, revealing lights and directions for their lives, namely all that is necessary for people, support- ing them in their search for real joy, wisdom and light, their true humani- zation. The Church becomes the atmosphere where theology must work, manifest itself and blossom. Theology must never be fi xed within in the concepts of a historical pe- riod, marked in a certain way from a philosophical, cultural, scientifi c and social point of view, but must always remain open towards other horizons of anchorage in different and always new historical contexts. Only in this way will it be able to show to the world “the new wine” of the adaptation of theology to the

TEOLOGIA 4 \ 2017 TEO, ISSN 2247-4382 73 (4), pp. 75-87, 2017 Priest Ioan Hornea from Arad in the Communist Prisons and His Confession Lucian Farcaşiu Lucian Farcaşiu “Hilarion V. Felea” Faculty of Orthodox Theology, Arad, Romania Email: [email protected] Abstract The present study presents the biography of the confessor Ioan Hornea from Arad region, who suffered for Christ in the communist prisons during his theological formation. The martyrdom of Father Ioan Hornea continued after his return from detention, when although ordained a priest and fi nally settled in several parishes of our diocese, he did not escape the attention of Securitate organs. Thus, he was constantly searched at home, intimidated, and summoned to hearings together with his presbytera. Despite this continuous terror, Father Ioan Hornea had the courage to confess Christ all the way in an atheistic world. After the establishment of religious freedom in Romania, since 1989 a new period of Father Ioan Hornea’s existence begins: he kept on serving and preaching Christ all along, on making the Christian education of the youth in schools and high-schools, on caring for “Oastea Domnului” (The Army of the Lord) movement in Arad region, which he was a true father to, on getting involved in the social work by regular religious assistance at the hospitals and the orphanages from Arad. Through this contribution, we wanted to pay homage to Father Ioan Hornea, the spiritual father and missionary, the suffering and the shepherd, the prayer and the accomplice of love for God and his fellow. They rose up in defence of the faith and tradition of the Romanian people and were able to overtly reject the atheistic and materialistic ideologies of a group of people forcibly installed at the leadership of a free state. PEACE TO THE MARTYRS, HONOUR TO THE HEROES! Radu CIUCEANU Abstract: “The Communist Party of Romania has but a few times mistaken on those who were chosen and destined to fill important positions and main ranks, especially in a field as sensitive and hot as the realm of faith, where Orthodoxism has blended its history with the very existence of the Romanian people. And, again, it was but seldom that the innate shrewdness of a country priest, which is worthy of the skills of an Oltenian reaper, has reached the perfection of a long-lasting political programme, at a time when the nave of the church (in Romanian – navă – the same word used to refer to a ship), in a country invaded by the Red Armies, was threatened by shipwreck and dissolution. Justinian Marina, the “horse thief”, was the one to blame. By means of politics woven with unique skill, he managed to cheat on each and every one of his surveyors, to let down the masters who had given him the kalimmachion, thus becoming straightforwardly and undoubtedly a Thomas Becket of Romania” (Radu Ciuceanu, 2001). Keywords: communist regime in Romania, persecution, Gheorghiu-Dej, Patriarch Justinian, Romanian Orthodox Church Preliminaries1 There was no surprise that the East was atheist and its ideology was strange not only to Romania, but also to every country under the Iron Curtain. The Iron Curtain itself was not surprising at all. The horrors that took place on the widespread territory of the USSR and its proximity separated by a few-metre-wide water frontier called the Nistru Director of The National Institute for the Study of Totalitarianism, the Romanian Academy, București, Romania.

Immediately after the Great Union from the 1st of December 1918 was accomplished, the representatives of the schools from Transylvania decided in a Congress, that the state education and the confessional education to be undertaken in the Romanian language. The Metropolitan Synod of Transylvania informed the believers, the schools, and the teachers, that the teaching of the study objects will be done only in Romanian language.
