s I sit at my desk composing this months bulletin article, I am surrounded by three beautiful maps of ancient Israel. I can easily see the regions of the 12 tribes, the A sacred sites which marked our ancestors lives, memorable mountains and holy cities. There is no sign of war on these maps, although battlefields easily could have been noted. The land these map makers wanted to present was one of peace and tranquility, harmony and holiness. Alas, 1, and Im sure all of you, long for such a time. As we sit, surrounded daily by reports of violence, aggression and hostility, we pray for peace in the State of Israel, a land to which many of us feel strongly connected and deeply love. Just a few short Rabbi Amy Schwartzman months ago, 36 members of the Temple joined me on a tour of Israel. How difficult it is for us to see those places we visited - then so calm and beautiful - now filled with ten- sion, anger and fear. Although much is still unclear about what truly happened to cause the recent outbursts in Israel, there is no doubt in my mind that the current situation questions the possibility of peace in the near future. Personally, I place the majority of responsibility for this loss on Arafat and the Arab community. Incitement to violence, appeals for death of and for the destruction of Israel, and failure to curb anti-Israel terror are inexcusable and intolerable. While their officials negotiated for peace, the greater Arab community did nothing to prepare themselves and their children for a peaceful co-exis- tence. Arabs have taught hatred to their young children and sometimes put them on the front lines of the rioters. Arafat has turned his back on peace and pushed away the only partner he has who can bring peace to his people. Surely, Israel is not free of guilt either. The Israeli government, in particular Arik Sharon, and many Israelis who live in the West Bank, have made serious mistakes. Israel too must take responsibility for thirty-three years of neglect which has led to great frustration and even rage. Nonetheless, Israel desperately needs our support. Now, when our Jewish cousins feel under siege by the rest of the world; now is the time when we must offer them a helping hand, a kind word and a shoulder on which to lean. We must let them know that they are not alone and that we will stand with them as they try to bring back a sense of security and calm to our homeland. I urge you to be in touch with people you know in Israel; write them a note, e-mail them or call. Come to events in our community which show the unity of the Jewish people. Attend the Temples Israel dis- cussion group which meets in the library on the first Sunday of the month. No matter where you fall in the political spectrum, there are opportunities to show your support. Buy Israel Bonds or donate to an Israeli organization of your choice. Finally, show your faith in the future and plan a trip. Although I know my vision of peace for Israel may not become a reality for a long time, it remains with me. I continue to count myself amongst those people who are called: Rodef Shalom - pursuers of peace. As we live in security and peace, so may all people in Israel - Jews and Arabs alike.

Shalom Rabbi Amy Schwartzman

6 Israeli Affairs

0 Excerpts from Reaction to the Violence in the Middle East

by Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch, Executive Directo,; ARZA/World Union October 5, 2000

elow are some preliminary reactions to the week of rioting in Israel: responsibility for the violence rests with Yasser Arafat and B the Palestinian Authority. Israels security establishment had been warning for weeks that the Palestinian Authority was preparing for vio- lence upon failure of the peace talks at Camp David. Arafat fomented the violence that might have spiraled even out of his control. That was a fail- ure of leadership of monumental and historic proportions. At Camp David Barak offered the Palestinians an independ- ent state under the most generous terms that an Israeli prime minister can offer. Here was an opportunity to fulfill Palestinian aspirations of statehood. Not only did Arafat reject the proposals, but also ordered violence, jeopardizing the accomplishments of the past decade. The Peace Process The peace process has been dealt a terrible blow. Arafats rejection of the peace deal followed b.y the violence of this week makes it far less likely that Barak can assemble any kind of majority in the Kncsset in favor of a peace accord. If there Wight have been a chance to survive politically by leaning on the Arab Members of Knesset, that has disappeared due to their own problematic statements. The irony is that the violence might be pushing Barak into the political embrace of Ariel Sharon. The public too is now less likely to ratify Baraks far-reaching compromises. The publics confidence that Israel can live side by side in peace with the Palestinians has been shattered. Most concerning of all to Israelis has been the coordination between Israels Arab population and the Palestinians on the West Bank and Gaza strip.

Keeping Our Temple Safe

RS takes seriously its responsibility to ensure a safe and secure environment at our facilities for all members of our community. Recent events in the Middle East and incidents at Jewish institutions in T the U.S. and overseas remind us once again of the need to meet this responsibility. To that end, TRS has undertaken some measures and is planning other steps to update and strengthen our security. We envision benefits from this program for all members of our community. At the same time, we will ensure that these measures are compatible with our dedication to being a spiritually welcoming and open congregation. Some measures (such as keeping the TRS front doors locked more frequently) may be an inconvenience to members attending programs. We apologize for this possibility, but ask your understanding and support for our decision to err on the side of increasing our margin of safety. - Amy Schwartzman, Senior Rabbi, Jonathan Kosarin, Temple President, and Judy Sefl Temple Administrator Temple Rodef Shalom Announces its Adult Bnai Mitzvah Service...
