Gerald B. Hindy MURRAY RUST III understands the value of a good foundation. A native Pittsburgher, he began coming to the museums The Hoban Family as a child, and those visits sparked a lifelong interest that led him to support the Museum of Natural History over the Mr. and Mrs. Ronald R. Hoffman years through his family’s foundation—The Rust Foundation. Dr. and Mrs. William J. Hoffman “My father used to take us to the Museum of Natural History when we were children,” says Murray, “and he was taken Patricia and Blaise Hollot by his father before that. The dinosaurs made a huge impression on me. They really stand out as most memorable, and William V. Hough my father feels the same way. I still have a favorite —the T. rex. It’s the most impressive.” Dr. and Mrs. Robert H. Howland Mr. and Mrs. John J. Humphrey Murray’s wife Shirley is also closely tied to the Museum of Natural History. She has been a docent in the museum’s Jeffrey Hunker Discovery Room since it opened 15 years ago. The couple has made several significant gifts through the family’s Cynthia Ingram Foundation to Dinosaur Hall. Jeffrey and Anne Ingros “We have a keen personal interest in Dinosaur Hall, so it’s natural for us to show our support,” says Murray. “The muse- Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. We have a resource that a lot of other cities don’t have—a place where visitors can come Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Jamison, Jr. and learn about the natural world. The Museum of Natural History is also a great resource for teachers, who can bring Diana and Peter Jannetta their students on tour and supplement their curriculums.” Beverly A. Jaramillo Mr. and Mrs. John E. Jester, Jr. Murray got his start in the family business, Rust Engineering Company, which his grandfather, Murray Rust Sr. founded Mr. and Mrs. J. Alan Johnson with his two brothers in 1905. His father, Murray Rust Jr., was president of the company for many years. Since 1972, Murray has been the leader of Montgomery & Rust, a real estate development and building company whose more Kevin R. Jones notable projects include the townhouses on Washington’s Landing, Summerset at the Frick, and the Village of Shadyside. Joe and Susan Karas Murray is a member of several builders’ organizations, and, in 1992, the Pennsylvania Builders Association named him Kathleen Kavanagh “Builder of the Year.” Gerri Kay Larry Keister Murray’s siblings and all of their adult children are active members of the foundation, which supports a broad spectrum Mr. and Mrs. George F. Kesel of education-based organizations. “I encourage everyone to go to the Museum of Natural History and learn about it,” he Ellen and Jack Kessler says. “If someone has a particular interest in educational resources, it’s an easy place to fall in love with and want to Mrs. Sydelle Kessler support. “CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART holds a spot that’s very near and dear to my heart,” David G. Richardson and David J. Thomas Sokolowski, Director, The Andy Warhol Museum “I love coming through Schenley Park on my way to work and seeing Eileen Meddis, Director, Corporate Human Resources Diplodocus standing by the museum building in the morning sun,” says Luo. Marcia M. Gumberg, Secretary “It’s really aesthetically beautiful to me; it always cheers me up.” Robert F. Fallgren, Assistant Treasurer Luo believes strongly in giving back to the institution that supports his scien- Frank A. Cardiello, Controller tific research. “Our fate is tied to our institution and the support the museum George R. McComb, Assistant Controller receives for our work,” says Luo in reference to himself and his colleagues. “As an individual, I recognize how important it is for Carnegie Museums to continue its support of the scientific pursuits of its curators.” Excitement currently abounds at the Museum of Natural History around the future of Dinosaur Hall and the museum’s plans to remount each dinosaur within the context of its ancient natural ecosystem— as if it were living. The creation of Dinosaurs in Their World will triple the museum’s exhibit space, and allow the museum to present scientific ideas in a way that is more approachable to visitors. Luo particularly likes the new oviraptorosaur exhibit. “The oviraptorosaur represents the new exhibit prototype,” explains Luo. “This animal is 65 million years old and it’s being displayed in its true environment. Many previous exhibits showed the animal out of context. The new exhibits will allow visitors to see plant life and other animals that lived at the same time and will be great tools for our mission to educate the public about sciences. “The Museum of Natural History is a stronghold for research and exploration,” he says. “This makes us a unique asset for the Pittsburgh region. We have one of the finest collections of vertebrate fossils in the world. And the museum as a whole has more than 20 million collected items representing Earth’s history, biodiversity, and human cultural diversity. It’s incredible, and something to be proud of,” he adds. “By supporting the museum, we make a valuable contri- bution to our region’s scientific and cultural education.”
