By CAR: For Woodlawn Cemetery: Take the Major Deegan Expressway to 233rd Street exit. You are at the north end of Woodlawn Cemetery. Make a right onto Jerome Avenue and go south for several blocks to the main entrance. For the Bronx Historical Society: continue down Jerome to East 208th Street. Turn left onto Bainbridge Avenue. By TRAIN: For North Central Bronx Hospital: Take the #4 train to Mosholu Parkway station. When exiting the train station, you will be on Jerome Avenue. Walk to 208th Street and then make a right. Walk to 210th Street until you get to Kossuth Avenue. The hospital is at 3424 Kossuth Avenue. For the Bronx Historical Society: Take the “D” subway line to Bainbridge Avenue and 204th Street. Walk north on Bainbridge Avenue to 3266 Bainbridge Avenue. The Bronx River Soldier statue is just outside the Museum of Bronx History/Valentine-Varian House which is residence to the Bronx Historical Society. For the Woodlawn Cemetery: Take the #4 to the Woodlawn station. The main entrance is at the Jerome Avenue and Bainbridge Avenue intersection. (Minor Member) UNDER THE BIG APPLE: A RETROSPECTIVE OF PRESERVATION PRACTICE AND THE NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY SYSTEM A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Emma Marie Waterloo August 2010 © 2010 Emma Marie Waterloo ABSTRACT The New York City Subway system is one of the most iconic, most extensive, and most influential train networks in America. In operation for over 100 years, this engineering marvel dictated development patterns in upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. The interior station designs of the different lines chronicle the changing architectural fashion of the aboveground world from the turn of the century through the 1940s. Many prominent architects have designed the stations over the years, including the earliest stations by Heins and LaFarge. However, the conversation about preservation surrounding the historic resource has only begun in earnest in the past twenty years. It is the system’s very heritage that creates its preservation controversies. After World War II, the rapid transit system suffered from several decades of neglect and deferred maintenance as ridership fell and violent crime rose. At the height of the subway’s degradation in 1979, the decision to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the opening of the subway with a local landmark designation was unusual.

Dir. of Governmental and Community Relations Jacqueline Carter, MTA I) New York City Bus Rapid Transit Project (Briefing on January 16, 2008). A) This project is for a special limited Bus route on Fordham Road-Pelham Parkway. The bus route starts at 207th Street/ Broadway and will end in Co-op city. This bus will run on a marked bus lane and will make only 17 stops at special marked bus stops located in the middle of the block. The DOT is working on a way to prepay the bus fare before boarding the bus. This bus should start running June 2008. II) Meeting with Jacqueline Carter, Assisted Director for Governmental and Community Relations on January 2008, regarding the conditions of the area around the MTA subway yard at Bedford Park Boulevard to West 205th St. and between Paul Avenue and Jerome Avenue. The area has not been cleaned of trash around and in the barbwire fencing. Graffiti has not been removed from the MTA building on Jerome Avenue. A) Ms. Carter reported that the area around the MTA subway yard had been cleaned up prior to this meeting. MTA is working on a way to remove the trash caught in the barbwire. The graffiti will be painted over sometime early spring. Ms. Carter asked to have police take pictures for “gang” tags. The District Manager will call the police about graffiti areas.

1748-54 Jerome Avenue, Bronx, Ny
1748-54 JEROME AVENUE, BRONX, N.Y. (CORNER OF EAST 175 ST.) On August 21, 1988, the weather was warm and sunny. In the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) in the Bronx, routine tasks were being conducted and Multi-Unit Drills were taking place. At 1748 Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, a single story taxpayer stood at the corner of E. 175 Street. The building was 50 feet x 100 feet. The building contained six stores, four fronting on Jerome Avenue, and two fronting on East 175 Street. In the cellar of this building, there was an illegal social club called “El Hoyo” (aka: “The Cave” or “The Hole”). The only entrance to this illegal club was off of the Jerome Avenue side. There was a stairway approximately 10 feet from the front of the building. The stairway entrance was flush with the floor and the wooden stairway was steep. Inside the club in the cellar, the ceiling was low (7 feet). There were candles burning in the club. There was a bar towards the front of the occupancy. There was no sprinkler system, automatic alarms or fire extinguishers in the social club. There was no emergency lighting. A Bouncer searched a man attempting to enter the club with the container on his person. The Bouncer found the container, and then ejected the patron. The Bouncer kept the container filled with gasoline. It was being stored behind the bar.
