ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DEPARTMENTOF PARKS BOROUGH OF THE BRONX CITY OF NEW YORK JOSEPH P. HENNESSY, Commissioner HERALD SQUARE PRESS NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF PARKS BOROUGH OF 'I'HE BRONX January 30, 1922. Hon. John F. Hylan, Mayor, City of New York. Sir : I submit herewith annual report of the Department of Parks, Borough of The Bronx, for 1921. Respect fully, ANNUAL REPORT-1921 In submitting to your Honor the report of the operations of this depart- ment for 1921, the last year of the first term of your administration, it will . not be out of place to review or refer briefly to some of the most important things accomplished by this department, or that this department was asso- ciated with during the past 4 years. The very first problem presented involved matters connected with the appropriation for temporary use to the Navy Department of 225 acres in Pelham Bay Park for a Naval Station for war purposes, in addition to the 235 acres for which a permit was given late in 1917. A total of 481 one- story buildings of various kinds were erected during 1918, equipped with heating and lighting systems. This camp contained at one time as many as 20,000 men, who came and went constantly. AH roads leading to the camp were park roads and in view of the heavy trucking had to be constantly under inspection and repair. The Navy De- partment took over the pedestrian walk from City Island Bridge to City Island Road, but constructed another cement walk 12 feet wide and 5,500 feet long, at the request of this department, at an expenditure of $20,000.

  • Why Hip Hop Began in the Bronx- Lecture for C-Span
Fordham University DigitalResearch@Fordham Occasional Essays Bronx African American History Project 10-28-2019 Why Hip Hop Began in the Bronx- Lecture for C-Span Mark Naison Follow this and additional works at: https://fordham.bepress.com/baahp_essays Part of the African American Studies Commons, American Popular Culture Commons, Cultural History Commons, and the Ethnomusicology Commons Why Hip Hop Began in the Bronx- My Lecture for C-Span What I am about to describe to you is one of the most improbable and inspiring stories you will ever hear. It is about how young people in a section of New York widely regarded as a site of unspeakable violence and tragedy created an art form that would sweep the world. It is a story filled with ironies, unexplored connections and lessons for today. And I am proud to share it not only with my wonderful Rock and Roll to Hip Hop class but with C-Span’s global audience through its lectures in American history series. Before going into the substance of my lecture, which explores some features of Bronx history which many people might not be familiar with, I want to explain what definition of Hip Hop that I will be using in this talk. Some people think of Hip Hop exclusively as “rap music,” an art form taken to it’s highest form by people like Tupac Shakur, Missy Elliot, JZ, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Wu Tang Clan and other masters of that verbal and musical art, but I am thinking of it as a multilayered arts movement of which rapping is only one component.

  • 1748-54 Jerome Avenue, Bronx, Ny
1748-54 JEROME AVENUE, BRONX, N.Y. (CORNER OF EAST 175 ST.) On August 21, 1988, the weather was warm and sunny. In the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) in the Bronx, routine tasks were being conducted and Multi-Unit Drills were taking place. At 1748 Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, a single story taxpayer stood at the corner of E. 175 Street. The building was 50 feet x 100 feet. The building contained six stores, four fronting on Jerome Avenue, and two fronting on East 175 Street. In the cellar of this building, there was an illegal social club called “El Hoyo” (aka: “The Cave” or “The Hole”). The only entrance to this illegal club was off of the Jerome Avenue side. There was a stairway approximately 10 feet from the front of the building. The stairway entrance was flush with the floor and the wooden stairway was steep. Inside the club in the cellar, the ceiling was low (7 feet). There were candles burning in the club. There was a bar towards the front of the occupancy. There was no sprinkler system, automatic alarms or fire extinguishers in the social club. There was no emergency lighting. Photo courtesy of Steven Spak There was a confiscated salad oil bottle filled with gasoline that a patron brought to the club a week before. A Bouncer searched a man attempting to enter the club with the container on his person. The Bouncer found the container, and then ejected the patron. The Bouncer kept the container filled with gasoline. It was being stored behind the bar.

2017 NYC SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM PARKS & RECREATION-091 Contact: Leslie Nusblatt Phone: (212) 360-8212 Fax: (212) 360-8263 Email: [email protected] AGENCY DESCRIPTION The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation manages 14 percent of the land in New York City. These assets range from playgrounds and large parks, to tranquil wooded areas and more than 14 miles of beaches. Parks serve as New Yorkers’ backyards, as vital meeting areas for outdoor play and recreation – but also as critical engines for economic growth and development. NYC Parks’ mission is to plan resilient and sustainable parks, public spaces, and recreational amenities, build a park system for present and future generations, and care for parks and public spaces to benefit New Yorkers across the five boroughs. Through an effort to improve the quality, accessibility, efficiency and sustainability of our city parks by increasing investment in underserved neighborhoods and expanding parkland: NYC Parks’ Community Parks Initiative, at the center of the Mayor’s plan, is completely redesigning and reconstructing dozens of parks in neighborhoods across the city with the greatest needs—35 of which are nearing the construction phase. NYC Parks is also leading in innovative park design with Parks Without Borders, a new design approach that focuses on improving park entrances, edges, and spaces adjacent to parks. By extending parks into communities, Parks Without Borders will improve New Yorkers’ access to quality parks. Ongoing work to care for our parks has: - Reconnected the City’s two most northern boroughs, Manhattan and The Bronx, when NYC Parks’ historic High Bridge was reopened.
