The Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) sparks the creativity, imagination, and liveliness of Birmingham by connecting all its citizens to the experience, meaning, and joy of art. Founded in 1951, the Birmingham Museum of Art has one of the finest collections in the Southeast supported by a strong educational program designed to make the arts come alive for children and adults throughout the region. More than 27,000 objects represent a rich panorama of cultures, including Asian, European, American, African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American. Highlights include the Museum’s collection of Asian art, considered the finest and most comprehensive in the Southeast; a remarkable Kress collection of and paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from the late 13th century to the 1750s; and the Museum’s world-renowned collection of Wedgwood, the largest outside of .

The Museum connects with the community through educational programs and curated exhibitions that engage, entertain, and enlighten visitors. Programs are designed around the Museum’s permanent collection and changing exhibitions, and provide opportunities for all ages and levels of experience to connect with art.

In its most recent fiscal year, BMA welcomed 124,039 visitors, an increase of 3,000 guests over the previous year. This increase was spurred by relevant and innovative exhibitions and programs, such as the popular Family Festivals and the Barbie: Dreaming of a Female Future exhibition, which received widespread acclaim from visitors and the media. Emblematic of the types of programs and exhibitions the Museum features, this exhibition takes a critical look at Barbie on her 60th anniversary. In the past six decades, Barbie’s many careers and enduring independence have influenced the dreams and imaginations of young people around the world. At the same time, her impossible appearance and physique promoted narrow and unattainable body ideals. This exhibition offers an immersive experience where visitors can explore their relationship with Barbie through a reimagined, modern dream house. The works in the exhibition represent artists’ interpretations of Barbie and are presented as part of this life-size dream house. The dream house itself is created by artists and interior designers and is furnished with objects created by female artists and makers that bring the space to life.

The Birmingham Museum of Art features a robust development team, including individuals responsible for the database, membership, events, and grants. In the most recent fiscal year, the team earned $2.4M from individuals, events, corporate and foundation grants, and exhibitions; the entire revenue for the museum, including funding from the City of Birmingham and other government appropriations, totaled $8.3M. The Museum offers an array of membership societies that generate annual support from individuals for the museum, including the Asian Arts Society, one of the oldest at the Museum; the Friends of American Art Society; and the Indian Cultural Society, which serves as the cultural home for the Indian community in Birmingham. Each year, the Indian Cultural Society holds a Holi festival, the Indian celebration of color. This popular event has grown each of the 10 years that it has been held, last year welcoming 2,200 people over four hours of music, dancing, food, henna, art- making, and gallery exploration. The event culminates in the throwing of colored powders to welcome the spring season. The Society, with approximately 35 actively engaged members, holds a trip to every two years.

Museum Director Graham C. Boettcher, PhD

Graham C. Boettcher is the R. Hugh Daniel Director of the Birmingham Museum of Art, in Birmingham, . Arriving in 2006, he served variously as a postdoctoral fellow, curator of American art, chief curator, and deputy director prior to his appointment as director in 2017. Boettcher has held fellowships at the Yale University Art Gallery, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and Terra Foundation Summer Residency in Giverny.

Among Boettcher's many diverse exhibitions are The Look of Love: Eye Miniatures from the Skier Collection, which was named to “The Season’s Best Museum Shows” by Architectural Digest in 2012, and Black Like Who?: Exploring Race & Representation (with co-curated with Dr. Kelli Morgan, 2015), which was named a “Don’t Miss” exhibition by the Wall Street Journal. He is currently researching the subject of the Viking Revival in American art and is a guest contributor to the forthcoming exhibition Scandinavian Design and the , 1890-1980, organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Milwaukee Art Museum. A native of Bellingham, Washington, Boettcher received his B.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University, and an M.A. from the University of Washington. Boettcher served as a trustee of the Association of Art Museum Curators from 2010 to 2017, including a term as its Vice President of Finance, and has been an active member of the Association of Art Museum Directors since 2018.
