  • Poor Clare Sister from Maryland Is Elected Abbess, Succeeds Mother Angelica
Poor Clare sister from Maryland is elected abbess, succeeds Mother Angelica BALTIMORE (CNS) — When Theresa Buck was still in high school at Mount de Sales Academy in the Baltimore suburb of Catonsville, she took a standardized assessment test meant to give some indication of the kind of career that would best suit her talents, personality and interests. Topping the list of potential careers, according to the assessment? Ministry as a woman religious. An exercise completed more than two decades ago turned out to be more than prescient. Not only did the former parishioner of St. Agnes Parish in Catonsville enter the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration at the Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in rural Alabama, she recently was entrusted with leadership of the internationally known monastery. Today with the religious name of Mother Mary Paschal of the Lamb of God, she was elected abbess July 29, taking on the same post that was once held by Mother Angelica, founder of both the monastery and the global Catholic communications network known as EWTN. The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration are a contemplative community of cloistered nuns whose charism is centered on adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Established in France in 1854, the religious community has monasteries that act autonomously. Betty Buck, Mother Mary Paschal’s mother, said the Alabama monastery had to get special permission from Rome to allow her daughter to become the abbess. At 38, she was not quite at the official minimum age requirement of 40 for the leadership position. Betty and her husband, Phil, parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ellicott City, Maryland, said their family was overwhelmed by the news of their daughter’s election.

  • 2016-2017 Annual Report
2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT 1 Honorable Kay Ivey Governor of Alabama State Capitol Montgomery, AL 36130 Dear Governor Ivey: I am pleased to submit the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2016-17. The Department continues to find more efficient ways to communicate and con- duct business with our constituents. License purchases, special hunt registrations and park lodge and camping reservations are available through our websites, www.outdooralabama.com and www.alapark.com. In addition, we are communi- cating to more than half a million people through email newsletters and notices. Funds derived from the cap on sales tax discounts were restored to State Parks in FY 2017. These funds have provided much-needed relief in addressing the back- log of park maintenance projects. Park guests totaled just under 5 million this fiscal year. The federal management of red snapper and other reef fish continues to be a highly volatile issue within the fishing community. Our Marine Resources Division is working with federal agencies and Congress to provide more state oversight of this fishery and a longer season for anglers. Snapper Check, which continued for the fourth year, is an important part of this effort. The State Lands Division has administered the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) on behalf of the State of Alabama since its beginning in 2005. During the life of this program, which closed this year, State Lands administered 49 grants for over $58 million funding various coastal project activities supporting Mobile and Baldwin counties. Participation in the state’s Game Check system for the recording and reporting of both deer and turkey harvests became mandatory during the 2016/2017 hunting seasons.

  • Brand New Beat
Ready for a BRAND NEW BEAT How “DANCING IN THE STREET” Became the Anthem for a Changing America MARK KURLANSKY Riverhead Books A member of Penguin Group (USA) Inc. New York 2013 C H APT E R O N E ARE YOU RE ADY? or my generation rock was not a controversy, it was a fact. F My earliest memory of rock ’n’ roll is Elvis Presley. For others it may be Bill Haley or Chuck Berry. For people born soon after World War II, rock ’n’ roll was a part of childhood. The rock- ers, especially Elvis, are remembered as controversies. But there was no controversy among the kids. They loved the songs, their sense of mischief and especially the driving beat. The controversy came from adults. Only adults attacked Elvis or rock ’n’ roll. The controversy was only in their minds—on their lips. It was the begin- ning of what came to be known as “the generation gap,” a phrase coined by Columbia University president Grayson Kirk in April 1968, shortly before students seized control of his campus. There has never been an American generation that so identified with its music, regarded it as its own, the way the Americans who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s did. The music that started as a subversive movement took over the culture and became a huge, commercially dominant industry. The greatest of the many seismic shifts in the music industry is that young people became the target audience. In no previous generation had the main thrust of popular music been an attempt to appeal to people in their teens.
