Constant commercial fishing for groundfish has occurred since the 1960s. The implementation of areas closed to bottom trawling to protect critical habitat for fish or crabs resulted in successful management of these fisheries. The efficacy of these closures on non-target species is unknown. This study determined if differences in abundance, biomass, diversity and evenness of dominant fish and invertebrate species occur among areas open and closed to bottom trawling in the eastern Bering Sea between 1996 and 2000. -

Baseline information on species composition is essential before industrial activities take place in waters adjacent to Kodiak Island. It was the intent of this investigation to collect information on the composition, distribution, and biology of the epifaunal invertebrate components of two bays of Kodiak Island. The specific objectives of this study were: 1) A qualitative inventory of dominant benthic invertebrate epifaunal species within two study sites (Alitak and Ugak bays). -

Box 5667 St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada AIC 5XI Abstract Two sympatrk species of Hermit Crab, Pagurus aeadianus and P. arcuatus, from the sublittoral near St. Chads, Newfoundland, have many similarities in their life history. These are expressed in their feeding, maturities of females (both species hatching eggs in early spring. extruding eggs in late autumn and carrying eggs through the winter), finding shells plentiful at small sizes but scarce at large sizes, and availability at a sublittoral station throughout the year. Differences seen were low rate of parasitization with Peltogaster paguri in P aeadianus: only one in almost five hundred specimens, while there were about 18% in P arcuatus; and in the former slightly higher fecundity, longer period of male maturity, somewhat larger size, and, as shown earlier, lower frequency in plankton from the area. Percent of ectocommensal protozoans on gills was low in P aeadianus but high in P areuatus, while those on setae of maxillule were high in both species. The collection consists of 26 species of 12 families. A new species of ethusid crab, Ethusina wakataka, is described and il- lustrated based on a male specimen from off Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, at depths of 1466̶1471 m. The new species can be distinguished from the known congeners primarily by the unique structure of the gonopods. The biogeography and the bathymetric distribution of the recorded species are briefl y discussed. Patagurus is characterized by a subtriangular, vault- ed, calcified carapace, with large, wing-like lateral processes, and is closely related to two other atypical pagurid genera, Porcellanopagurus Filhol, 1885 and Solitariopagurus Türkay, 1986. The broad, fully calcified carapace, calcified bran- chiostegites, as well as broad and rigidly articulated thoracic sternites make this remarkable animal one of the most crab- like hermit crabs. Patagurus rex carries small bivalve shells to protect its greatly reduced pleon. Carcinization pathways among asymmetrical hermit crabs and other anomurans are briefly reviewed and discussed. A new genus and species of hermit crab (Crustacea, Anomura, Diogenidae) from the Timor Sea, north Australia by Gary J. MORGAN and Jacques FOREST Abstract. A new genus and species of diogenid, Tisea grandis, is described from the Timor Sea. It is a very large species, probably the largest marine hermit crab. It is most similar to the genera Dardanus and Petrochirus but is dist inguished by a combination of characters pertaining to the pattern of lineae and sulci on the carapace, the morphology of the chelipeds and the twisting of the dactyl of second and third pereiopods. Resume. Tisea grandis, nouveau genre et nouvelle espece de pagure Diogenidae, est decrit de la mer de Timor. Cest une espece de grande taille, sans doute le plus grand des pagures marins. Two very large specimens of an unusual hermit crab (fig. 1) were forwarded to one of us (GJM) by Dr A. J. BRUCE of the Northern Territory Museum, Darwin. These proved to be representatives of a new species that could not be assigned to any described genus of hermit crabs.
