Canup Obedience Robins emigrated to Virginia in the 1620s in search of the land and status his elder brother gained by inheritance. This thesis establishes motivations for immigration and methods by which one English emigr6 achieved success in Virginia. The 1582 will of Richard Robins established a pattern of primogeniture for successive generations of his Northamptonshire family. Muster lists, wills, parish registers and a 1591 manor survey record increasing prosperity and associated expectations. Robinses were among those "better sorts" who paid taxes, provided armour, held local office, educated their children, and protcstcd against perceived government injustice. In Virginia. Richard Robins*s great grandson parlayed his assets into land, office and status. The extent of his education and financial resources was probably limited, but good health, timing. -

Page 1 of 30 Renaissance Studies 1 Recent studies in the early modern sermon suggest that preaching matters more than print. Peter McCullough, one of the most important sermon scholars working today (and the general editor of the Oxford edition of Donne’s sermons), argues, in the ‘Introduction’ to his volume of Launcelot Andrewes’ sermons, that ‘Sermons, although avidly consumed by Elizabethan and Jacobean readers, were first and foremost live, theatrical events. As Vickers has said of classical oratory, they are “performance-art”’ (xxxviii). In another article, McCullough suggests that ‘It is dangerous… to treat “sermons” as an undifferentiated category to which the same kinds of interpretation always apply. Early modern sermons – whether “elite” or otherwise – were radically occasional pieces of performed writing, contingent upon the contexts in and for which they were delivered. They suffer, in turn, from any interpretative engagement that does not attend carefully to the circumstances outside the remaining textual artefact that moulded and shaped it ab origine ’ (‘Preaching’ 213-4). McCullough is not wrong: it is often the case that sermons need to be studied in context with great care. Court sermons, McCullough’s specialty, especially repay the kind of embedded reading that pays attention to audiences, political and religious context, and other important influences. I take issue, however, with the assumption that our readings of the ‘remaining textual artifact’ need always to be embedded in the performance of the sermon in the pulpit. I certainly agree that we must not read all sermons as if Accepted Article they were ‘undifferentiated’ but that makes it all the more important to recognize when early modern sermons require other modes of reading to discern what’s at stake in their publication for their writers, editors, and readers. -

Handren B.A., California Baptist University, 1995 M.Div., American Baptist Seminary of the West, 1999 A POST-COURSE ASSIGNMENT FOR MN 9101-01 HISTORICAL SURVEY OF HERMENEUTICS AND HOMILETICS Submitted to the faculty in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MINISTRY Concentration in Preaching at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Deerfield, Illinois June, 2013 HISTORICAL SURVEY OF HERMENEUTICS AND HOMILETICS: A SUMMATIVE PAPER In the spring of 2011, I took a Doctor of Ministry course at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School entitled, “Hermeneutics and Homiletics.” One of the required readings was Dennis Johnson’s fine work, Him We Proclaim: Preaching Christ from all the Scriptures. Part one of this book, and particularly chapter four, provides an overview of the history of hermeneutics and homiletics which both aided my understanding of the subject and exposed a significant gap in my knowledge. Specifically, Johnson helped me to see how little I knew about the interpretation and proclamation of the Bible over the last twenty centuries, and how significant a bearing this history has on current issues and debates. Since my Doctor of Ministry concentration is preaching, I thought this gap unacceptable and thus requested an independent reading course which was eventually entitled, “Historical Survey of Hermeneutics and Homiletics.” I set two objectives for the course. First, I aimed to develop a broad and general understanding of the history of the relationship between hermeneutics and homiletics in the Christian church. I have fulfilled this aim by reading a little over five-thousand pages of secondary material, and by building a basic mental framework which now needs to be clarified, strengthened, and built out. -

An introduction and biography are presented, followed by an examination of his prayer life, doctrine, and liturgy. His prayer life is examined through his private prayers, via tract number 88 of the Tracts for the Times, daily prayers, and sermons. The second evaluation made is of Andrewes’ doctrine. A review of his catechism is followed by his teaching of the Commandments. His sermons are examined and demonstrate his desire and ability to link the Old Testament and the New Testament through Jesus Christ and a review is made through examining his sermons for the different church seasons. Thirdly, Andrewes’ liturgy is the focus, as many of his practices are still used today within the Traditional Anglican Church. His desire for holiness and beauty as reflected in his Liturgy is seen, as well as his position on what should be allowed in the worship of God. His love for the Eucharist is examined as he defends the English Church’s use of the term “Real Presence” in its relationship to the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist. -

The Eucharist The Commemoration of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes Sunday 27 September 2020 11.00am Welcome to Southwark Cathedral Set on the south bank of the River Thames in one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in London, this building has been a constant witness in a place of change. The first church was built on this site around the year 606. First a convent, then a monastery, it became in 1106 the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Overie. With Westminster Abbey and St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield it is one of the three remaining great monastic churches of London. At the Reformation the Priory became a parish church and it remains so for the people of Bankside. In 1905, as south London was rapidly expanding, the church was consecrated as the cathedral for the new Diocese of Southwark. As well as a place of constant witness to our faith in Jesus Christ, this church has a momentous and proud history and has had links with many famous and influential characters including St Thomas Becket, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. In the 20th century this cathedral was at the heart of the new movement in theology termed ‘South Bank Religion’. This movement asked challenging questions of people about faith in the modern age which continue to be explored at Southwark Cathedral which describes itself as ‘inclusive: faithful: radical’. CORPORATE REUNION: A NINETEENTH- CENTURY DILEMMA VINCENT ALAN McCLELLAND University of Hull EFORE THE ADVENT of the Oxford Movement in 1833 and before the B young converts George Spencer and Ambrose Phillipps had, shortly before his death, enlisted the powerful support and encouragement of the aristocratic Louis de Quelin, Archbishop of Paris,1 in the establishment in 1838 of an Association of Prayers for the Conversion of England, the matter of the reunion of a divided Christendom had greatly engaged the attention of Anglican divines. Indeed, as Brandreth in his study of the ecumenical ideals of the Oxford Movement has pointed out, "there is scarcely a generation [in the history of the Church of England] from the time of the Reformation to our own day which has not caught, whether perfectly or imperfectly, the vision of a united Christendom."2 The most learned of Jacobean divines, Lancelot Andrewes, Bishop of Winchester under James I, regularly interceded "for the Universal Church, its confir mation and growth; for the Western Church, its restoration and pacifi cation; for the Church of Great Britain, the setting in order of the things that are wanting in it and the strengthening of the things that remain".3 In the anxiety to locate the needs of the national church within the context of the Church Universal, Andrewes was followed by a host of Carolingian divines and Settlement nonjurors, themselves the harbingers of that Anglo-Catholic spirit which gave life, albeit by means of a prolonged and painful Caesarian section, to the vibrant Tractarian quest for ecclesial justification.
