THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hi everyone.

While the focus of any country music club is primarily the music, from time to time we need to attend to those somewhat less exciting, but certainly beneficial, organisational aspects of running a club such as ours. So it was on Tuesday August 13 that an enthusiastic group of members gathered at the clubhouse for the club’s Annual General Meeting. Reading my annual President’s Report, summarising the clubs achievements and successes over the past 12 months, brought home to me just how much we have achieved and participated in together during the year. As I mentioned in my report, one of the most pleasing developments of the past year has been the increase in junior memberships. We are extremely fortunate to have the current talented group of juniors as members and we recognise that the future of the club depends on our ability to encourage and nurture our juniors.

One of the more significant moments for me at the AGM was the recognition of the contribution made to the club by Rod and Lorraine Bickford with the awarding of Life Memberships. Life Memberships recognise a consistent and valuable contribution to the club over a long period of time and are not given lightly; I congratulate Rod and Lorraine as worthy recipients.

Heading into my third and final term as president I would like to recognise that I have been extremely fortunate to have had the benefit of such a strong, cohesive and supportive Executive Committee over the past 12 months. I thank them very much. In addition, I would like to thank the Office Bearers and all club members for their contributions over the past 12 months and I look forward to your continued support and enthusiasm for the incoming Executive Committee and the club in general throughout the coming year.

The club held our 19th annual Bluegrass festival over the weekend of 9-11 August and anyone who attended over the weekend couldn’t help but feel proud of the professional manner in which the event was staged. Congratulations must go to Neil and Cilla Wills, their organising committee and to our army club volunteers for their outstanding contribution. Even the weather was managed to perfection; three days of beautiful sunshine (not a gumboot in sight). I was also very proud of our own performers on Saturday afternoon RMCMC showcase. I think it was very successful inclusion and hopefully will become a permanent fixture at future festivals.

Our juniors have been bringing great distinction to the club with their recent performances at music festivals. Chandler Mowles took out a string of awards including the Overall Juvenile Champion at the Capricorn Districts country music festival in Rockhampton; and

Felicity Kircher was judged the Overall Juvenile Champion at the Homestead Youth Talent Expo. Redlands was also well represented at Homestead by Chandler Mowles, Kelsie Sweetman, Karen Maimon, Zareen Kahn, Sarah Clark, and Kiara and Laina Rodrigues. In fact the number of entrants from Redlands was second only to Homestead. Tiarna Shepherd and Caitlyn Wessels represented the club at Redcliffe CMC just recently. We should all be very proud.

Remember the upcoming Pigs concert to be held at the clubhouse on Saturday September 14 (next weekend). The Pigs are a very popular alternative bluegrass band and all indications are that this will be a big night at the club.

In our very busy lives I know how easy it is for some things to slip our mind. If you have not as yet renewed your membership for 2013-2014, please see Pam Faulkner or one of the ladies at the door of the social who will advise you how to get back onto the member’s register. Alternatively email club Secretary Kevin Brown. We very much value our members.

New members to the club in the past month: Terry, Tracey and Chandler Mowles

The following nomination for membership has been received: Mark Daunt

A reminder that we do distribute key communications through email channels so if you want to be added to the email distribution list send your email address to Club Secretary Kevin Brown at email address – [email protected]

19TH ANNUAL REDLANDS BLUEGRASS REPORT

The build-up started before Christmas last year and the RBF Committee has worked in the background building budgets, sourcing funding, arranging artist contracts, arranging all sorts of logistics involved with building a successful festival and now that the dust has just about settled, we can look back and be very proud of what the club has achieved.

The increase in participation by our own members has been a blessing as the festival continues to grow in size and reputation – we simply could not achieve the results without your wonderful support. The feedback from the artists involved continues to roll in. Just tonight as I write these notes, we received a postcard from one of the main acts thanking us for making our festival ‘the one they most enjoy in Australia’. The emails continue to come in weeks after the festival complimenting the club on such a friendly and well organised festival.

The committee was hesitant about moving from July to August this year to avoid the school holiday airfares, however the numbers were up and the weather was perfect. People from ‘down south’ were not too keen to head back home after spending a few days in the sunshine, enjoying the music, friendship and the natural bush land setting at the festival site. It is dangerous to name names when so many people were involved however special mention must go to Peter Cathcart, Rowena and Hans, Bill and Dawn and the kitchen crew, Kevin & Dehlia and the bar crew, Allen & Mal and their crew, John O’Donnell and Steve Wootton plus many others who put in many many hours before, during and then after the weekend to make it such a great occasion.

And we hardly mentioned the music!

What a feast of talent throughout the whole weekend, non stop performances and workshops plus jam sessions everywhere, people reveling in the atmosphere.

Redlands Modern Country Music Club 7 SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER 2013

Already, the committee has met to de-brief and plans have already begun to build up for 2014 where we will invite some of the festival favorites from previous years to come and help us celebrate our 20th Redland Bluegrass Festival.

On behalf of the Redlands Bluegrass Committee – a big ‘thank you’ and ‘congratulations’ to all those members and friends who supported the festival and helped to make it something for which the club should be justifiably proud.

Thanks, Neil & Cilla

THE DAY WE WENT TO COOLANGATTA/TWEED HEADS

Well, it was a small group from RMCMC that ventured off to the Smokehouse Country Music Club on Sunday 25th August; seven in total. Kevin & Dehlia, Hans & Rowena, Greg (and Banjo), Dennis and myself....I was the cheer squad.

The social was held at the Collangatta/Tweed Heads Golf Club starting at 1pm. Upon our arrival we were warmly greeted by club President, Lyn Davies. The stage was a delight when seen by our performers and they all commented on it. The Smokehouse Country started off with their members singing favourite old country classics. There was a modest number in the club group and they wore charming outfits that befit a country music club.

The food was adequate and yummy. Then the guest artists came on for a one hour spot. Dehlia & Kevin sang two lovely songs, then Greg & banjo next, with Greg giving the origins of the three songs and had everyone listening to the stories in his words. Then Rowena and Hans sang their three beautiful harmony folky songs. Next up was Dennis who had everyone clapping and a’tappin’ to his country rock songs. Sometimes Brady, a young chap from their club would play the drums and he complimented the songs very well with his good timing. Our singers were also backed by a steel guitarist and a lead guitarist from Smokehouse. The soundman was great and the foldbacks on stage were tops. I don’t really understand that part of it, but that’s what our gang commented on.

Towards the end Lyn Davies presented Dehlia & Kevin with an appreciation certificate for our club and our songbirds finished with their beautiful song ‘Under Your Spell Again’ as gratitude.

As the afternoon came to a close around 5pm club members from Smokehouse complimented the Redlands performers on their lovely harmonies and professional entertainment; in other words Kevin, Dehlia, Greg, Dennis, Hans & Rowena did our club proud. Good on you all. What a great day it was. Love and cheers from Gwenda Quinn

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING RESULTS

The AGM was held on Tuesday 13th August where the outgoing Exec Committee was given thanks for their collaborated efforts during the year and the incoming Exec Committee was congratulated. Dehlia presented her President’s Report for the 2012-2013 year. Dehlia thanked her dedicated executive team and all those enthusiastic club members who contributed in making the past 12 months an enjoyable and successful period for the club. Dehlia declared all positions vacant and called on former club Vice-President Des Boughen to preside over the election of the new committee. Please refer to page 2 of the newsletter for all newly elected Executive Committee & Office Bearer positions for the coming year 2013-2014. Congratulations go to Rod & Lorraine Bickford for receiving Life Membership in recognition of their continued, dedicated and loyal service to the club over many years.

Glen Campbell was born in Billstown, a tiny community near Delight in Pike County, Arkansas. The seventh son of 12 children, his father was a sharecropper of Scottish descent. He started playing guitar as a youth without learning to read music. He credits his uncle Boo for teaching him the guitar. In 1954 Campbell moved to Albuquerque to join his uncle’s band known as Dick Bills and the Sandia Mountain Boys. There he also appeared on his uncle’s radio show and on K Circle B Time, the local children's program on KOB television. In 1962 Campbell signed with Capitol records and a string of unsuccessful singles and followed. Capitol was considering dropping Campbell from the label in 1966 when he was teamed with producer Al DeLory and song writer Jimmy Webb, a union that produced some of his biggest hits in the 1960’s and 1970’s. During the period December 1964 to early March 1965, Campbell was a touring member of the Beach Boys, filling in for Brian Wilson. He was also known for hosting a variety show called The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour from January 1969 through June 1972. With Campbell's session-work connections, he hosted major names in music on his show including: David Gates and Bread, The Monkees, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, , , Roger Miller and helped launch the careers of Anne Murray, Mel Tillis and Jerry Reed who were regulars on his Goodtime Hour program.

Campbell appeared in movies such as True Grit with John Wayne and Any Which Way You Can with Clint Eastwood as well as hosting a number of television specials.

In 2005, Campbell was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and he continued to record and to perform until 2012. During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has released more than 70 albums. He has sold 45 million records and accumulated 12 RIAA Gold albums, 4 Platinum albums and 1 Double-Platinum . Campbell's hits include Gentle on My Mind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Galveston, Rhinestone Cowboy and Southern Nights. Campbell has been married four times and is the father of five sons and three daughters, ranging in year of birth from 1956 to 1986. He has been married to Kimberly "Kim" Woollen since 1982. They have three children together, who have joined their father on stage since 2010 as part of his touring band.

In June 2011, Campbell announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease six months earlier and that he had been suffering from short-term memory loss for years. He went on a final "Goodbye Tour", with three of his children joining him in his backup band. He performed his last show on November 30, 2012 in Napa, California.

AUGUST SOCIAL ROUNDUP

With Bill Allan compering we got under way just after 5PM. Good performances from Roy, Gloria, Col, Norma, Robert, Tiarna and Dennis, all capably supported by various club musicians got us off to a rousing start. Peter Cathcart, as the spotlight artist for the evening continued festivities with a well-constructed session of Johnny Cash songs. Peter was followed by our second tranche of artists commencing with Lex and Robyn. It would be remiss of me not to mention Robyn’s comedy performance in which various items appeared from within the folds of her clothing. I don’t dare ask where she was hiding the golf stick.

We then had a new walk up artist, local Thornlands entertainer Jim Bibby. Jim sang two original songs from his CD “All the way with LBJ”. You can find out more about the CD at www.alltheway1808.com. Proceeds from the sale of his CD go to a charity group supporting SAS veterans. As a lead guitarist, Jim does a lot of charity work and plays at the Redlands RSL. Hopefully we will see him return to the club

Nada, followed by Theresa and Matt who were supported by Des and Lorraine, then kept the music flowing as the evening turned decidedly cooler. Birthday boy Bill Healy warmed some of us up by singing ‘Running Bear’ which got a conga line weaving its way through the crowd. His rendition of ‘The Auctioneer’ kept many entertained as we attempted to sing along, especially after sampling Cilla’s homemade mulled wine. Others, such as Cilla, Karen and Rosie warmed up by quality testing the wine constantly throughout the night.

Dawn’s spot comprised ‘Cottage in the Country’ and ‘Ten Guitars’. She was followed by a terrific set from Rowena and Hans, including renditions of Neil Young’s ‘Four Strong Winds’ and Emmy Lou Harris and Daniel Lanois’ beautiful song ‘Blackhawk and the White Winged Dove’. Then Des and Lorraine, supported by Matt and Theresa (I see a pattern emerging here) started their set with ‘You’re the reason I can’t sleep at night’. Lorraine blamed this condition on the Australian cricket team and thankfully (I say ironically) they have fixed that condition for her. After a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ and the sharing of some very nice cake for the monthly birthday members, we enjoyed supper and raffles before the guest artists for the night, Check 2, (Colin and Lyn) took the stage.

Colin and Lyn have been entertaining since the 70’s. They started singing together in 1998 and became very popular playing 50/50 dance music, which they have continued doing on a regular basis for the past 15 years at venues such as Lismore Heights Bowling club, Lismore Workers Club, and clubs in Evans Head and Casino. Check 2 Country Band also performs as a backing band for the Ballina Country Music Club several times per year, and as a 6 piece country band when required. They presented a very polished performance and were well received.

The night finished with Gary and Eve from Ipswich, presentations by Dehlia of life member badges to Des and Lorraine, and performances from Wild Oats and The Redlands Bluegrass Boys. Let’s hope as you read this tonight (7th September) that the weather is a little kinder.... Article by Michael Sheehan

Don’t miss the fun

Australia’s favourite bluegrass funsters The Pigs are known worldwide for their combination of super-catchy original tunes and foot-stomping ‘Piggified’ cover versions. Crashing through musical genres like a runaway tractor, the Pigs’ latest album, The Great Bluegrass Swindle marries superb musicianship with a distinctly Australian sense of humour – and hints at the uniquely bent energy of The Pigs’ exceedingly popular live shows. For over 8 years now, The Pig Family has been stepping out onto the big festival stages around Australia, barefoot and bewildered. Meanwhile the band’s YouTube Channel has seen more than 400 000 hits, with their Single Ladies video becoming something of a sensation (also seen on ABC’s Spicks and Specks and Australia’s Got Talent). In 2013 The Pigs’ Great Bluegrass Swindle rolls on, with more Australian dates, followed by a return to Germany and Denmark.

LEX’S CORNER

A Sound Workshop will be hled at our clubhouse, on the 12th October starting at 10:00am for those of you who want to learn about our sound gear, and help out with the setting up and mixing of our sound at socials and Friday nights.

We will learn about our equipment, how to connect it, adjust it, and then mix it.

The training session will go from 10:00 am till 12:30, then break for lunch.

After lunch we will setup the gear, and then learn to mix for the various people who will turn up to play.

It is a great opportunity to find out all those “mysteries” of sound gear that have baffled and scared you till now! Don't miss this great opportunity!

SOMEONE SAID THIS IN 1955

1. I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $10.00. 2. Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $1,000.00 will only buy a used one. 3. Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter? 4. Its too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet. Submitted by Colin McCann
