He thought he’d send some demos to Nashville to be pitched to new artists. On his mailing list was Tim Dubois, formerly of Arista and now senior partner with Universal South. When he got a call from Dubois to come in for a meeting, he thought they’d found some cuts for new artists. Instead, Universal South signed him and produced “Back to the Well,” his first al- bum in four years. And what does Lee Roy think? “Best record I ever made in my life,” he asserts without hesitation. “Absolutely. I don’t mean to be uppity about that, I just honestly believe it is. I’m proud of it, lyrically, sonically, melodically, and it all came out of not even trying to make a record. J Michael Instruments Listenign Room: SAM PACETTI

ne of the absolute best bets for the month of April will be a special Operformance by Sam Pacetti on Friday, April 13 at J Michael Instruments’ Lis- tening Room in Melbourne.

Pacetti’s 1997 debut, “Solitary Travel,” earned him widespread acclaim. His fingerpick- ing was so impressive that he was labeled a virtuoso who was destined for greatness. But rather than embracing the music business and its trappings, Pa- cetti turned toward personal freedom and consciousness. As a result, the artist continues to live in St. Augustine and performs a limited number of shows, usually near his home base. His first work in eight-years, last year Pacetti teamed up with long-time friend, Gabriel Valla, to produce “Union.” Pacetti said the work has more of a singer-songwriter feel than his debut. Inter- estingly, the project wasn’t initiated by either artist, but a fan of Pacetti’s music. “The way that it happened was that a really nice soul came into a lot of money and offered to finance a project for us,” said Pacetti in a recent interview. “So we immediate said ok.” Asked about the how the album was received Pacetti said, “It didn’t get bad reviews. I didn’t’ really pay attention. From what I can discern people have enjoyed. It’s defiantly much different than the initial project.” As of late Pacetti has been working independently on a follow- up to “Solitary Travel” and hopes to put it out within the year. Zodiac Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo. Rated: R. Running Time: 158 Minutes This is director David Fincher’s engrossing account about the long manhunt for the serial killer who terrorized the Frisco Bay area back in the 60’s & 70’s. His body of work includes such films as Fight Club, Seven, Panic Room, & Aliens 3. Unlike those movies, in Zodiac you know the outcome going in. To those uninformed, a suspect in these brutal murders was never arrested. From start to finish, Zodiac is burdened by an overabundance of facts & details which account for the length of this film. It is an intense and time-consuming ride as you watch the 3 major principles try to crack the case. Gyllenhaal is Robert Graysmith, a political cartoonist who gets very much involved in the puzzle solving aspect of the case. Ruffalo plays Dave Toschi, the Frisco cop who is an eager investigator and is the model for Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry character. Downey is Paul Avery, a hard nosed and hard drinking crime reporter who was one of the first to present many of the Zodiac stories. It is Gyllenhaal’s character who is the most persistent and obsessive. He has written books about the gruesome cold case. This is a gripping film about terror and bloodshed that is teamed with investigative frustration and unsettling conditions. B

24 - Brevard Live April 2007 Brevard Live April 2007 - 25 26 - Brevard Live April 2007 Chuck Van Riper TWIN STORIES

“What’s it like to be a twin?” is probably the question most asked of us. Well, we have always been twins and never NOT been twins, therefore have nothing to compare it to, we would smugly explain. Every set of twins has their “twin stories”. Here are a few of my favorites. When we were younger, maybe 11 or 12, we first realized we were choc-o-holics. Chocolate was our favorite food group. We couldn’t get enough of the stuff. That year we went to the dentist. He probed and prodded and took x-rays. When we were done with the exam, we waited nervously in the waiting room with Dad to find out the results. We knew if it was a bad check-up, we wouldn’t be getting our chocolate fix for a while. The dentist finally came out with the x-rays and exclaimed to my dismay that I had 12 cavities! There goes my plan for a chocolate cake and M&M dinner! My brother was laughing at me, thinking that would fare much better. Then the dentist held up his x-ray. We were all shocked that not only did he also have 12 cavities, but they were in exactly the same teeth! The dentist stood there swapping the x-rays around, explaining that he could mix them up, it didn’t make a difference! We got twin toothbrushes that year. I guess these things could be explained genetically, but there are some things that are just inexplicable. For example, one time when we were apart playing different gigs, my brother was in Alaska and I was in the Keys. We had not talked to each other for months. Christmas came and went. We got together the following summer and went to visit our mom in NJ. She had these two Christmas cards sitting on top of the TV. “Yo, Ma!” I exclaimed. “What’s with the X-mas cards? You know its July?!?” She replied “Don’t you remember? You guys sent me the same cards last year?” Until that moment, we had no idea. Out of the billions of cards …… go figure. At one point in our lives, we were apart for about 3 years. During that time, we had virtually no contact with each other. No phone calls, no letters, nada! Over the course of those few years, we would occasionally call our dad, also in NJ. For 3 years straight, we would ALWAYS call within 15 minutes of each other! One time I called. “Hey, dad. How’s it going? Have you heard from Bill?” He replied, “Come on!!!...you guys have to be setting this up! He just called 5 minutes ago!” Again, we had no idea. Then there was the time I had come home from college for winter break. I had written a song and couldn’t wait to play it for my brother. “Check out this tune!” was the first thing I said to him. “No, wait! You check out this tune first!” he responded. It seems that, he had also written a tune that he wanted to play for me. After going back and forth for a while, I finally relented and let him go first. After the first few measures, I started playing along, knowing exactly what to play next. We had apparently written the same song! And then there was the time we had the same dream on the same night, but I think that’s a whole other column! So, what’s it like to be a twin? I don’t know. What’s it like to NOT be a twin?
