This is an enjoyable summer read, but I had very definite deja vu to 40 years ago and reading the autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini in college. Both Cellini and Marton are engaging writers, but their almost psychopathic egotism makes for an interesting, if at times, exasperating experience. One of the reasons famous peoples biographies are more interesting is because most of us are curious to see behind the curtains of the rich and powerful. For instance, Bill Clinton, versus the neighbor who lives across the street, visits Marton the morning after her third husband dies. However, we never really get a sense of the multitude of celebrities that parade through this book, since generally they are presented as one dimensional figures whose role is to reflect Martons splendor. The book might have been subtitled famous people who had the pleasure of meeting me. They fall into good (those who fawn over Marton) and bad (those who express any hesitancy) I must say I never felt as positive about Nancy Reagan as when reading about her cautiousness in allowing herself to be interviewed by Marton.There is even a rather bizarre section where Marton simply posts a number of positive Thank you notes from famous people to her and her husband for their hospitality while he was UN ambassador. They read like your basic BS like pleasantries one puts in a thank you note, but she seems to take them literally. She hints at some deep dark side to her divorced husband Peter jennings, but the only tangible complaint is that he finds her self centered and ambitious, and one can see where he is coming from. Perhaps the strangest part of this memoir, is that it is filled with so many famous people, and yet so devoid of any actual friends. Through all her tribulations, not one close female friend ever appears. One wonders whether she filtered her non-celebrity friends out of the book for their and her privacy, or she simply filtered them out of her life. This is a fine book to read on a plane or at the beach, but it does leave you shaking your head. Enemies of the People. My Family’s Journey to North America. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2009. pp. 272, illus. Reviewed by Enikő M. Basa, Library of Congress. Three books, three totally different life stories, yet each a memoir of the Second World War and its aftermath. In East West Odyssey the author‟s focus is on her career in the United States and fitting into American society years after her flight from Hungary. Enemies of the People tells a gripping story of how even privileged persons with good connections were hounded by the Communist government, while Life Behind the Iron Curtain chronicles what happened to ordinary people in post-war Hungary. Kati Marton‟s is the most professional and the best written. This is no surprise given her journalistic background, her access to primary sources beyond her own memory, and her impressive publisher support. While an academic with scholarly publications to her credit, Corredor‟s work suffers from not having had a strict editor. Unfortunately, the English version of Lápossy‟s work is almost unreadable because the translator was not at home in English and no competent editor reviewed the manuscript. What is a gripping story with flashes of vivid description is thus seriously marred. All three are memoirs but they are not equal. Marton is the child narrator whose comments are placed into context by the journalist. The tale, too, is not her own so much as that of her parents so that there is already a distancing.

Russian and GREES majors have the opportunity to study in various cities, both in Russia and in other post-soviet countries, an opportu- nity that was unheard of only 30 years ago! It was on one such program, at Bard-Smolny College in Saint Petersburg, that I met Alex Richardson ’12, with whom I fell in love and followed back to the green pastures of rural Ohio. From Saint Petersburg to Oberlin, we have shared many unique experiences. In Russia we saw icicles as big as people, tutored English at an orphanage, and introduced beer-pong to our native vodka-drinking comrades. Alex was even challenged to a duel by one of my suitors, which thankfully never took place. Afer returning to Oberlin, our adventures continued, thanks to the hard- working and thoughtful faculty members who welcomed me as one of their own students. Here, we saw a live performance of the Jerry Grcevich Tamburitza Orchestra, taught a Russian winter-term class, and read Master and Margarita in the original. Despite the lack of duels, Oberlin College has sponsored many culturally enriching events and has given me the honor of sharing them with you below.
