    Chapter 11 Clarecastle – Port & Fishing The Port of Clare, Clarecastle Port Shipping Records,Clarecastle Quay,a Clarecastle Sailing Ship Eric Shaw Fishing on the Fergus Boland’s Rock Fish-traps – located about five miles down-river from Clarecastle. photograph taken by Eric Shaw As long as the River Fergus has flowed through the parish and that people have populated its banks, the river has been a source of transport and a source of food in the form of fish. In 2004, a uniquely well-preserved complex of medieval fish-traps at Boland’s Rock* was investigated by a team from Galway University. Local fishermen had been aware of these traps that became visible at low tide but this was the first time that the wooden traps were scientifically examined. Radiocarbon dating of the timber used in the traps showed that they dated back to the late 11th to late 12th century AD. These traps may have been set by Augustian monks from Clare Abbey and Canon Island to provide food for the large number of monks and students that are linked to the abbeys. *shown on maps as Boorland’s Rocks but known locally as Boland’s Rock Net-fishing on the Fergus The boat used by the Clarecastle net-fishermen for many years was known as a gandalow, a boat design used in the Fergus and Shannon Estuaries. The drawing above of the Quay shows a gandalow on the river. The boat is keelless and with the spring in the floor, it is ideal to manoeuvre in shallow water or over the mud flats.

The county is named from the little town of Clare, near the mouth of the Fergus : and this got its name from a bridge of planks by which the Fergus was crossed in old times : the Gaelic word clar signifying a board or plank. SIZE AND POPULATION. This county has water all round (namely, the Atlantic, the Shannon, and Lough Derg) except for 40 miles of its north and northeastern margin, where it is bounded by Galway. Greatest length from Loop Head to the boundary near Lough Atorick on the northeastern border, 67 miles ; breadth from Limerick to Black Head (nearly, but not quite, at right angles to the length), 42 miles ; breadth from Black Head to the shore west of Bunratty (at right angles to the length), 35 miles ; area, 1,294 square miles ; population, 141,457. SURFACE. It may be stated in a general way that the northern part and the eastern margin are mountainous or hilly ; and the middle and south form a broad plain, occasionally broken up by low hills, and in one place by a considerable mountain (Slievecallan). The barony of Burren in the north is an extraordinary region of limestone rock, rising into hills of bare gray limestone, the intervening valleys or flats being also composed of limestone, with great blocks strewn over the surface, both hills and valleys being relieved here and there by lovely grassy patches of pure green. MOUNTAINS AND HILLS.     N.M.A.J. vol. 48, 2008 33 The West Clann Chuiléin Lordship in 1586: Evidence from a Forgotten Inquisition LUKE McINERNEY An unpublished inquisition of the Court of Exchequer is used to shed new light on the inner workings of a sixteenth-century Gaelic lordship prior to the collapse of the Gaelic system. As a contemporary recording of native political organisation it provides valuable evidence on social hierarchies, economic organisation and place-names. A remarkable inquisition of the Court of the Exchequer held at Galway and dated 27 January 1585 (recte1586) has come down to us in transcribed form by the early twentieth century antiquarian Robert William (R.W) Twigge1 and is collated amongst various documents in his unfinished work, Materials for a History of Clann-Cuilein.2 R.W Twigge was one of several antiquaries whose interest centered on County Clare and who published articles of historical and genealogical interest.3 His contemporaries included George Unthank Macnamara who collaborated with R.W Twigge in his unpublished work Materials for a History of Clann-Cuilein4 and the prolific antiquary, George Thomas Westropp. R.W. Twigge transcribed this inquisition because of its relevance to the McNamara (Mac Conmara) family and its connection with the history of Clann Chuiléin. The majority of inquisition material that has survived for sixteenth and seventeenth century County Clare is due to the efforts of James Frost who published, in abstract form, 218 inquisition post mortem cases in his 1893 A History and Topography of the County of Clare, before they were destroyed in 1922.5 James Frost did not copy the 1586 inquisition document and so its unlikely survival can be credited to R.W.

SS: Today is the 10 May 2017 and I am Sharon Slater and I am interviewing Michael Mulcair and Harry Blackwell on life around the Shannon and on the Shannon Estuary. So, what I would like to know first is how long have you been in the area? I am going to ask Michael first. MM: I'm here since 1932, oh sorry 34, that's it. SS: And were your family on the river? Did they work on the river? MM: No, nothing at all to do with the river. Absolutely not. SS: And Harry? HB: Well I'm 60 years old I'm here since I was born and it's heritage to me to be on the river because my granduncles came out of Greenish Island which I'm the present of today and eh, all before me have been boatmen and fishermen so as I said it's heritage really. SS: And you said your family were, what were your family, do you know any of their names, your granduncles? HB: Oh yes yes, my granduncles were pilots for the river Deel when the schooners used to come into this river and come up to the small piers up the river we'll say the schooners used to come up to Gort Pier, you know, so when the boat would come into the Shannon Estuary once she's come to the mouth of the river where there's a place called the 'stake' and Greenish Island is just inside the stake adjacent to it.

The term ‘national monument’ as defined in Section 2 of the National Monuments Act (1930) means a monument ‘the preservation of which is a matter of national importance by reason of the historical, architectural, traditional, artistic or archaeological interest attaching thereto…’ What is a National Monument in State Care? National monuments in State care include those which are in the ownership or guardianship of the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DEHLG). Other owners of national monuments are empowered under Section 5 of the National Monuments Act (1930) to appoint the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government as guardian of such monuments. This means in effect that while the property of such a monument remains vested in the owner, its maintenance and upkeep are the responsibility of the State.

His father was Marty McInerney, his grandfather was Dan his great grandfather was Denis and he thinks his great great grandfather was John. Se names his fathers brother and sisters:- Paddy was the eldest. He became a cop in Detroit. Steve went to Birmingham. John was also a cop in Patrickswell. Mickey worked for a farmer in Limerick. Jimmo worked on the pilot boat at Cappa and built and raced his own currachs. He won a cup at a currach race in Skerries. He says the 3 brothers would race currachs. Danno worked refuelling the sea-planes at Foynes. He then moved to Shannon and finished up manager refuelling the sea-planes. Peter and Tessie would take the people out to see the sea-planes at Foynes in a launch. They charged 2 bob a trip. Ses father was born in 1906. Peter and Tom stayed on the island farming. Tessie married a farmer in Kilmihil.
