On 21 October 1792 the Jews of Metz joined their Gentile compatriots in celebrating a republican victory. Emancipated by the Constituent Assembly only one year previously, the newcomers to French citizenship took the occasion of a civic festival to celebrate their recently won freedom. Testimony to this public show of Jewish patriotic zeal is an extraordinary document, a Hebrew version of the "Marseillaise," which the "citizens professing the faith of Moses" sang to republican soldiers in the synagogue of Metz. There was nothing blasphemous in the patriotic hymn, and indeed the Jews were following an ancient tradition by praying for the land to which they had been dispersed. For the period of the Revolution, however, it was an unique event, and as such provides the historian with a rare opportunity to glimpse into the world of French Jewry on the morrow of its emancipation. One sees in the Hebrew "Marseillaise" a Jewish attempt to understand the staggering events of Revolution and emancipation, to comprehend the historical situation in which they suddenly found themselves, to articulate their relationship to the nation and to sacralize the Revolutionary values of their patrie. By placing the Hebrew battle hymn and its French translation in the context of Revolutionary demands vis-à- vis the newly emancipated Jews, one perceives the power of republican ideas such as indivisibility, fraternity, and regeneration to penetrate even into the long-isolated world of orthodox Jewry, and the attempt of a traditional people to embrace the values of its liberators without losing its ancient identity. By singing a Hebrew version of the republican hymn, the Jews of Metz found a "traditional" means of identifying with France's struggles, of integrating themselves mentally into the French nation, in short, of picturing themselves as Frenchmen. The fête civique began at ten o'clock in the morning, when the representatives of the Commune of Metz assembled to celebrate the recent successes of the Republican Army in Savoy. Escorted by a company of Sexagenarian veterans, they left the communal house and marched to the Departmental Assembly, where they joined the administrative corps, the magistrates, the heads of the National Guard, leaders of the garrison and the citizen-soldiers of Thionville, who in a decisive battle had recently driven the enemy from their town and saved their compatriots in Metz from an otherwise imminent siege. Two canons, provided by the National Guard and drawn by artillery horses, were then fired, signalling the beginning of the procession. Military sounds continued in the form of drum-roll and music performed by various corps of soldiers, who marched with public functionaries, judges and civilians along with their comrades, the volunteers of Thionville. A model of fraternity, the citizens marched in no apparent order of precedence, and mixed irrespective of status under the banner of the département, carried by the senior member of the Veterans' Company.1 At the sound of church bells, three hundred members of the National Guard joined the parade. They marched to the rousing strains of the "Marseillaise" and the "Ça Ira," frequently interrupted by the applause of participants and the firing of artillery from the city ramparts. As the triumphant cavalcade made its way through Metz its participants traversed a space defined by such edifying points as the place de la Liberté, the place de la Loi, and finally the place de l'Égalité. The lesson in citizenship continued as the patriots encountered a large platform, erected at the height of twenty steps, and surrounded by the symbols of the Republic. A column surmounted by a cap in the style of William Tell stood next to a statue of Liberty, which in turn was adorned with the emblems of Unity, Strength and Equality. The members of the administrative corps and the Thionville deputation mounted the platform, and an unnamed citizen made an imploring, frightening speech, brimming with republican rhetoric about an "impious league" headed by a "conspirator king and perjurer," an enemy of Liberty 1. This false sovereign, warned the speaker, invited his subjects to "sleep peacefully on the edge of a volcano about to erupt beneath you." Following the speech, Citizen Duprat, the commander of Thionville, increased the dramatic tension of the moment as he drew his sword, pointed proudly to the scar he had "earned" in battle, then placed his weapon at the foot of the emblems of Liberty and Equality. The commander's heroic gesture provoked thunderous applause and shouts of "Vive la République!" from the throngs of citizens crowding the place de l'Égalité. The orchestra once again struck up the "Marseillaise," and the good citizens of Metz and Thionville sang the chorus of each strophe. In many respects the fête civique at Metz resembled the hundreds of other Revolutionary festivals taking place throughout France during the decisive year of 1792. Conforming to the typology of a fête révolutionnaire, the festival at Metz included all of the obligatory features: the fraternization among groups distinguished solely by their "function," the patriotic speeches, the playing of the "Marseillaise" and the firing of artillery, and the exhibition of national emblems, those holy relics of the Republic.2 What was unusual, and indeed unique in the Metz festival was the organized participation of Jews. 2 . Established in 1567, the Jewish community of Metz had grown by the end of the eighteenth century to comprise three thousand inhabitants. Although socially and economically inferior to their Sephardic coreligionists in Bordeaux, under the Old Regime the Jews of Metz possessed a superior legal status to that of their poor relations in the communities of Alsace and Lorraine. They enjoyed the right to reside in the city, to lend money legally at interest rates determined by the royal authorities, to govern their religious and civil activities, and, significantly, to participate as a corps in ceremonies marking important dynastic occasions. Practiced in the tradition of patriotic acclamation, the Jews of Metz were eager to demonstrate their loyalty to the nation that had finally accepted them as equal citizens.3 Their Gentile compatriots were quick to show their appreciation. At three in the afternoon, after a spartan meal at the Commune and a Te Deum service at the Cathedral, the members of the Departmental Assembly returned to the Maison commune, where the president addressed the representatives and, on behalf of the city's recently emancipated Jews, invited them to the synagogue to join 3 . "Citizens," he announced, "You have just rendered thanksgiving unto the Eternal, who poured out his blessings upon the just cause and the armies who defended it. The citizens professing the Religion of Moses are also going to present their grateful homage to the mighty God, the God of Armies. They have invited you [to join them]; let us go eagerly, for the difference in religion does not constitute a difference in love for the Republic." After leaving the Maison commune, the defenders of Thionville were greeted by the chief rabbi, Oury Cahen, who accompanied them to the synagogue. There they met the Jews of Metz, who were waiting in full festival dress for the solemn ceremony about to take place. The rabbi led the soldiers before the tabernacle and made an "extremely patriotic speech, exalting the bravery of the defenders of Thionville, emphasizing that France had the right to count on the efforts of all her children, no matter what their faith."4 Next, the rabbi presented Rolly, the mayor of Metz, with a civic crown. Following this rite of civic recognition, an orchestra struck up the "Marseillaise," but instead of hearing the familiar lyrics of Rouget de Lisle, 4 . Archives israélites 3 (1842): 571-572. the victors of Thionville heard a strange, incomprehensible rendition of the battle hymn:5 naflah naflah malchut ha-resha cherem hi utehi toeva Fallen, fallen is the wicked reign, The abomination has been banned. For an additional thirty stanzas the Jews celebrated in their sacred language the revolutionary events that had made them free. It examines factionalism in small towns like Aubagne near Marseille, and how this produced the murders and prison massacres of 1795–1798. Another major theme is the conver- gence of lynching from below with official terror from above. Although the Terror may have been designed to solve a national emergency in the spring of 1793, in southern France it permitted one faction to con- tinue a struggle against its enemies, a struggle that had begun earlier over local issues like taxation and governance. This study uses the tech- niques of microhistory to tell the story of the small town of Aubagne. It then extends the scope to places nearby like Marseille, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence. Along the way, it illuminates familiar topics like the activity of clubs and revolutionary tribunals and then explores largely unexamined areas like lynching, the sociology of factions, the emer- gence of theories of violent fraternal democracy, and the nature of the White Terror. Perhaps because of the country’s small size, it is often overlooked in accounts of Western European History. However, Luxembourgers experienced the German occupation in a unique manner, in large part because the Germans considered Luxembourgers to be ethnically and culturally German. The Germans sought to completely Germanize and Nazify the Luxembourg population, giving Luxembourgers many opportunities to resist their oppressors. (Bruno Bauer, Die Judenfrage)1 The Jews (like the Christians) are fully politically emancipated in various states. Both Jews and Christians are far from being humanly emancipated. Hence there must be a difference between political and human emancipation. (Marx and Engels, The Holy Family)2 Capitalism has not only doomed the social function of the Jews; it has also doomed the Jews themselves. (Abram Leon, ‘Toward a Solution to the Jewish Question’)3 Within the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, the perspectives of Jewish eman- cipation and the Jewish question were synthesised to the extent that emancipation was justified in terms of solving the Jewish question. Within the French Revolu- tion, the inclusive face of universalism that was articulated in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen was synthesised with the terror directed at those labelled ‘enemies of humanity’. In both the Enlightenment and the revolutionary tradition, however, there were alternative ways of thinking about Jewish emancipation that sought to break radically from the prejudicial assump- tions of the Jewish question. In the nineteenth century, the synthesis of Jewish emancipation and the Jewish question was to be torn apart. On the one hand, the Jewish question was set in opposition to Jewish emancipation; on the other hand, Jewish emancipation was justified independently of the Jewish question.4 The tensions contained in the eighteenth-century synthesis could no longer be held in check.

We build amodelthatpredictsthatminoritycommunitiesweremorelikelytobeexpropriatedinthewake of negative income shocks. Using panel data consisting of 1,366 city-level persecutions of Jews from 936 European cities between 1100 and 1800, we test whether persecutions were more likely in colder growing seasons. A one standard deviation decrease in average growing season temperature increased the probability of a persecution between one-half and one percentage points (relative to a baseline probability of two percent). This effect was strongest in regions with poor soil quality or located within weak states. We argue that long-run decline in violence against Jews between 1500 and 1800 is partly attributable to increases in fiscal and legal capacity across many European states.     PROBLEMS OF JEWISH LIFE BY YOYSEF SOLVEY During the half century that the Kadimah has existed, the Jewish people went through the biggest transformation in its history. It was totally rebuilt and put together by the people, its structure and its geographical division; the content of the problems that stood and continue to stand to this day before us, also changed completely. 50 years ago, the problems of the Jewish individual stood in the first row. Yiddishkayt was at the very least external, not critical and did not give most Jews any separate worries. The major problem was the fight for Jewish emancipation and civil rights for the Jewish individual. In Czarist Russia, where more than half of the Jewish people lived, Jews were second rate citizens, almost without rights. In Romania, they were officially thought of as foreigners, etc. The major program was the fight for equal rights. A quite painful matter was the issue of Jewish poverty in Eastern Europe. These people were imprisoned in the Pale of Settlement. The big spaces of Russia proper were forbidden to Jews. The need to earn a living was the impulse that drove Jews to wander and so they created the third problem – the emigration. Emigration lessened the Jewish concentration in Eastern Europe and created new settlements, especially in the English‐speaking countries: North America, Canada, South Africa and Australia, as well as in Latin America. The stream went from what connected the Jewish mass, the Jewish people, so the situation at least on the surface was secure. Most of the people were still traditional‐religiously inclined.

    BETWEEN EMANCIPATION AND ANTISEMITISM: JEWISH PRESENCE IN PARLIAMENTARY POLITICS IN HUNGARY 1867–1884 Árpád Welker THE PERIOD UNDER STUDY The early 1880s were both difficult and extraordinary from the point of view of Hungarian Jewry. Political antisemitism had been present for half a decade, but it became violent and influential during these years, though only for these years. In other words, this was a time of crisis within the ‘Golden Era’ of the Hungarian Jewry, as some researchers of Hungarian Jews call the period of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy 1867–1918. [1] Besides antisemitism ‘normal’ political debate took place in parliament simultaneously, namely that related to the bill on Jewish–Christian marriages, which was also decisive from a Jewish point of view. The ‘antisemitic wave’ started with the attempts to establish a nation-wide movement, the Central Association of Non-Jewish Hungarians, following the example of Wilhelm Marr’s Antisemitenliga in Germany. [2] This period of virulent antisemitic activity culminated in the events related to the infamous Tiszaeszlár blood libel case, including a series of riots threatening the safety of Jews in numerous counties, and the foundation of the National Antisemitic Party in 1883. After the clear defeat of the antisemites in the elections of 1884, antisemitism practically became insignificant. [3] It took ten years until a political party incorporated antisemitism in its programme again, but the antisemitism of the Catholic People’s Party was ‘less virulent’, [4] and neither their only nor even their main goal. [Annie Lacroix-Riz, { Le Choix De La Défaite }, Armand Colin, Paris, 2007, 671 pages.] by Pierre Beaudry 5/7/2008 “We have not vanquished France, She was given to us.” (Field Marshal Walter von Reichenau.) In the main, except for a number of additional names, the “Vichy Documents” that Annie Lacroix-Riz has investigated in her book confirm the French banking conspiracy of the Synarchy Movement of Empire (SME) that historian Roger Mennevée had reported in his revue Les Documents Politiques, Diplomatiques et Financiers , during the 1940’s, and which had been known to the FDR intelligence community during the World War II period. The Lacroix-Riz findings reveal nothing significantly new about the three fascist coups d’Etat that set France up for the Nazi invasion of May 1940. As a matter of fact, Lacroix-Riz said that the reports of “Roger Mennevée, who had scrutinized the financial press since 1919, [were] almost as precise as the State Archives.” (LCDLD, p. 79.) 1 “They Chose Defeat” is an appropriate title for such a historical singularity because it immediately indicates that the invasion had been prearranged conspiratorial action . Indeed, the choice of the defeat was a conscious and a well prepared plan that was orchestrated by the British, Dutch, and French Banking oligarchies, in order to break the will of the republican forces and the general population of France as a sovereign nation- state, and with the intent to institute fascism throughout the world.
