Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to control cucurbitae ( )

We dream to be a part of GO GREEN slogan by PROTECTING CROP CREATING LIFE which is our tag line

in preserving our nature for our future generations.

IPM introduction Integrated Pest management approaches (IPM) is thought to be the best and very effective in many countries of the world to control vegetable pests. “IPM targets changing of the farmer’s practices toward growing a healthy crop and increasing the farm output and farmers income on a sustainable basis while improving the environment and community health”. IPM could even be termed as Eco-friendly pest management.

How does Pheromones work? A pheromone is a chemical which is used for communication between individuals of the same species. , for instance, make heavily use of pheromones in order to communicate between each other. Insects use pheromones to send alarms, mark territories or paths to food, cause individuals to keep apart or come together, and very important for the preservation of the species, to find and attract mates. A great advantage of using pheromones as a bait is that they only attract target insects and the insects do not learn to refuse it. Usually, the cost to produce pheromones is higher than the cost for traditional pesticides but much less pheromone needs to be applied in order to control the insect population.

Bactrocera cucurbitae (MELON FRUIT FLY) description: Melon Fruitfly is the most damaging pest of cucurbits and considered as an important obstacle for economic production of , Bottle gourd, Bitter gourd, Sweet gourd, Snake gourd, Ridge gourd, Pointed gourd , Sponge gourd, ,Mask melon, .

Adult Melon fruit are similar in size to a housefly, about 6-8 mm long. The body is light brown to a honey color in appearance. There are several prominent bright yellow markings on the thorax (upper body) and a distinctive black 'T' pattern at the base of the abdomen (lower body). The wings are clear with a dark coastal vein and "melon seed" shaped spot at the tip.

Damage

Adult fruit flies prefer young, green, and tender for egg laying. The females lay the eggs 2 to 4 mm deep in the fruit pulp, and the maggots feed inside the developing fruits. The fruits attacked in early stages fail to develop properly, and drop or rot on the plant leading to crop loss. Since, the maggots damage the fruits internally; it is difficult to control this pest with . One female may lay over 1000 eggs during her life. Depending on the environmental conditions and susceptibility of the crop species, the extent of losses varies between 30 to 100%

Due to its nature of infestation, it is very difficult to control the pest. The increasing use of synthetic insecticides has led to a number of problems such as development of resistance to insecticides in some insect pests, high residues in market produce, ecological imbalance and danger to health of the pesticide applicator.

Considering the alarming consequences of pesticide usage and residual effect on the environment, pragmatic programme is now needed worldwide to minimize the dependency on insecticides without hampering crop production.

MAXPLUS TRAPDESCRIPTION

DIMENSIONS: Approximate Dimensions (Assembled) : 120mm diameter x 150mm height Dome Dimensions : 120mm diameter x 110mm height Dome Material : virgin plastic grade Dome Colour : Clear Base Dimensions : 118mm diameter x 50mm height Base Colour : Yellow Approximate Weight (per Trap) : 100 grms This trap is designed from the regular Mcphail trap design for economical and budgetary purpose. It is used in monitoring fruit flies. It has two components 1) Clear top & 2) Yellow base.Inside the clear top is a platform on which pheromone attractant is placed. The yellow base contains a funnel-shaped entrance, which enables the insect to fly up into the trap. Once inside the trap, the insect is attracted by the light coming through the clear top and continues to try and escape upwards. The exhausted insect drops down into the base filled with liquid and drowns.

IPM TRAPDESCRIPTION DIMENSIONS: Approximate Dimensions (Assembled) : 15cms height x 9.5cms diameter Material : Plastic Dome Colour : Clear Base Colour : Yellow The Easy disposable Fruit fly trap IPM TRAP is designed for economical and budgetary purpose. It is used in monitoring fruit flies.

It has a yellow base and a clear top, which can be separated to facilitate servicing. This trap has entrance holes around the periphery of the clear top, The fruit flies enter the trap due to the attractant pheromone chemical and get trapped. The insecticide present in the trap having very less concentration further kills the fruit flies. Hence reducing the chemical residue on the crops.

Benefits of MELON FLY LURE &MAXPLUS TRAP: The best reason to use these pheromone lures & traps is to monitor and control fruit fly pest population trends. They reduce the cost and burden of unnecessary spraying of pesticides, which in return reduces our environment from contaminating. Due to low pesticide residue the produce meets the demand in export markets and gives profitability to the growers.
