Optical microscopy was used to reveal the anatomical structure of the vegetative (root, stem, tendrils, leaves) and reproductive (ovary, male flower petals) organs. Histo-anatomical details were highlighted by coloration with an original combination of reagents for the double coloration of cellulose and lignin. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and stereomicroscopy led to the elucidation of the structure of tector and secretory trichomes on the inferior epidermis of the leaf. -

Accepted 18 March, 2011 A protocol was developed for in vitro propagation by multiple shoot induction of Momordica balsamina (Cucurbitaceae), a climber with high medicinal and nutritional values. High frequencies of multiple shoot regeneration were achieved from auxillary bud of nodal explants. The bud explants were cultured on MS media supplemented with 1.0 mg/L benzyl amino purine (BAP) which stimulated proliferation of the bud meristems to form bud clusters having 6 to 8 co-efficient. The elongated shoots were sub- cultured for rooting on ½ MS media supplemented with 0.3 mg/L NAA and 0.2% activated charcoal. The plantlets raised in vitro were acclimatized in green house and successfully transplanted to natural condition with 70% survival. Direct organogenesis of explants and regeneration of M. -

This oil is effective for skin care as it is light, easily helps in restoring the elasticity of skin. Due to these absorbable and has humectants properties. Our study is about attributes this oil can be used in cosmetic industry for extraction of watermelon seed oil by solvent extraction process production of skin care products. The watermelon seed oil with the use of different solvents, its analysis and application can also be used as an anti inflammatory agent [4]. -

Omnia Ezzat Ali Esmail Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Pharmacy Egyptian Russaion University [email protected] Abstract: Recent trends in controlling and treating diseases tend to prefer natural drugs rather than synthetic ones. The medicinal value of these plants lies in its constituents which include alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, volatile oils, steroids and minerals. An alcoholic extract of Citrulls colocynthis fruit seeds in a dose of 25 and 5o mg/Kg.B.wt intraperitonealy have been given daily to the rats exposed to high fat diet for 25 weeks (30% fat instead of 5% fat in normal diet). Sampling has been done every 5 weeks with verifying of blood glucose level, plasma insulin level, liver lipid extraction and plasma leptin level. The results revealed a protective ability of the fruits seeds extract in preventing, to a large extent, the onset of the fatty liver syndrome as well as diabetes mellitus type 2 associated with it. PEMBëRTON, Scientific Assistant, Mediterranean Fruit-Fly Investigations, Bureau of Entomology INTRODUCTION Aside from the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Wied., there is no other insect in the Hawaiian Islands that is causing such financial loss to fruit and vegetable interests as the melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae Coq. The damages caused by its ravages are placed by some even higher than those caused by C. capitata. While B. cucurbitae was not officially recorded until November, 1898, when it was first discovered by Mr. George Compere in the market gardens in the environs of Honolulu, it had been knownlocally about that city many years before. Mr. Albert Waterhouse, Acting President of the Hawaiian Board of Agriculture and Forestry, states that less than 30 years ago excellent cantaloupes (Cucumis meló) and watermelons (Citrullus vulgaris) and many kinds of pumpkins and squashes were grown in profusion the year round. Since that time the spread of the melon fly has been so rapid that this insect is now found on all the important islands of the Hawaiian group, and cantaloupes and water- melons can not be grown except on new land distant from old gardens. More than 95 per cent of the pumpkin (Cucúrbita pepo) crop is annually ruined, not to mention the havoc caused among the more resistant cucumbers (Cucumis sativus). ^ Not only does the adult melon fly oviposit in fruit that has already set, but more often—in the case of the pumpkin and the squash (Cucúrbita spp.)—in the unopened male and female flowers, in the stem of the vine, and even in the seedling itself, especially in seedlings of the watermelon and the cantaloupe. -

RIEB Floriculture Specialist, The Ohio State University A NNUAL garden :flowers are a necessity in the well planned .ti.garden for they offer many advantages not found in the peren nial and biennial :flowers. They are easily grown from seed, they produce effects the same season, and as a rule are less demanding in their requirements of growth. Being so easily grown from seed, they give a greater amount of effect for a small expenditure than any other type of :flower. The term "annual :flowers" is an extremely elastic one. We apply it to those plants of which the seed is sown in the spring, and blossoms produced the same season, the plants being killed when cold weather arrives. We also include in this group tender perennials such as the snapdragon and the pansy which, although they often live over, never amount to much the second year. There are many interesting ways in which annual :flowers may be used. This bulletin o:ff ers plans for various sized beds and sug gestions for group plantings. ANNUAL FLOWER BEDS There are many cases where a bed or a group of beds may be planted entirely with annual :flowers. -

India ABSTRACT: In this investigation the antibacterial activity of aqueous extracts of commonly used spices and vegetables were assayed against Bacillus methylotrophicus strain Kharuss 0103 isolated from poultry farm. Garlic (Allium sativum) extract showed maximum inhibitory effect on Bacillus methylotrophicus strain Kharuss 0103. Aqueous extracts of Zingiber officinale, Allium cepa, Beta vulgaris and Momordica charantia did not inhibit the growth of tested bacteria. Allium sativum were showing zone of inhibition of 30 mm and 24 mm using Agar well diffusion method and Agar disc diffusion method respectively against this strain. These results suggest that Allium sativum is a potential spice for inhibiting the growth of this bacterial strain isolated from poultry farm. It has been shown to possess anticancer, antidepressant, antidiabetic, anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiobesity, antioxidant, and antiulcer properties. Its common phytochemical components include alkaloids, charantin, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolics, tannins, and terpenoids. This plant is rich in various saponins including momordicin, momordin, momordicoside, karavilagenin, karaviloside, and kuguacin, all of which have been reported to contribute to its remedial properties including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic infections. Based on established literature on the anthelmintic activity of M. charantia and possible mode of action, this review article has attempted to compile M. charantia could be further explored for the development of potential anthelmintic drug. Citrullus lanatus is an antioxidant and has been shown to reduce oxidative stress (Khaki et al., 2013). Effects of phytochemicals (flavonoids) on pancreatic β-cells leading to their proliferation and secretion of more insulin have been proposed by Mahesh and Menon (2004), as the mechanism by which medicinal plants used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus reduce hyperglycaemia in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Fifteen female wistar rats were used in the study, they were divided into three groups of five rats each, namely; the control group, diabetes control group administered distilled water, and diabetes group administered watermelon seed extract. The diabetic groups were made diabetic by single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg). Daily watermelon seed extract was administered orally (200 mg per kilogram body weight), one week post streptozotocin injection. -
