The Sadies Northern Passages [2017 Bio] by Jason Schneider the Cover
The Sadies Northern Passages [2017 Bio] By Jason Schneider The cover of The Sadies’ new album is a powerful image of the northern lights made by photographer David Kilabuk in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sight few of us will ever get to behold with our own eyes. Yet, the awe-inspiring natural beauty and mystery captured in the photo are an ideal reflection of the music contained within. No further embellishment seems necessary. That’s been the essence of The Sadies’ story ever since the quartet comprised of singer/guitarists Dallas and Travis Good, bassist Sean Dean and drummer Mike Belitsky first exploded onto the North American scene 20 years ago. Back then there was still something called “alt-country,” a catchall for artists striving to carry on traditions with punk rock attitude. The Sadies certainly fit that description, but the breadth of their skills and musical knowledge was unparalleled since a group of fellow Torontonians left Ronnie Hawkins in the mid-‘60s to take a job backing Bob Dylan. As the aurora borealis shifted with each album The Sadies made, the overall picture took on more defined colours. On top of that was the incredible list of collaborations—Neko Case, R&B legend Andre Williams, The Mekons’ Jon Langford, Jon Spencer, Robyn Hitchcock, John Doe, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Gord Downie, Neil Young for fuck’s sake!— each one pushing The Sadies’ own sound into new, unmapped territory. Eventually, more time was taken in between albums as focus shifted to their original songwriting, and what was once the best live band in Canada became the best band in Canada, period. -
Time's the Revelator
Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music Ashley Denise Melzer A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of American Studies (Folklore). Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Dr. William Ferris Dr. Robert Cantwell Dr. Patricia Sawin © 2009 Ashley Denise Melzer ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ASHLEY MELZER: Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music (Under the directions of Dr. William Ferris, Dr. Robert Cantwell, and Dr. Patricia Sawin) This thesis investigates the relationship between the modern old-time and alt.country movements through the comparison of four different female musicians: Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, Gillian Welch, and Neko Case. These four women often pull from the same wellspring of old-time songs/structures/sounds, but their instincts come from exceptionally different places. The disparity between the ways they approach their music, reveals how the push toward modern capitalist industrialism has affected how different artists and communities access and transmit those old-world icons and sounds. Furthermore, their engagement specifically with the topic of gender exposes key tactical differences. Old-time musicians, Washburn and Gellert, work within the strictures of tradition so as to remain in dialogue with their community. Welch and Case play into the experimental bent of alt.country to emotionally affect listeners in order to create discreet, personal connections between themselves and their audience. iii To the ones who listen and love me anyway iv PREFACE In the summer, Florida is so hot the home becomes some dark prison of necessary air conditioning. -

Roger Knox Stranger in My Land Release Date: Feburary 2013
ROGER KNOX STRANGER IN MY LAND RELEASE DATE: FEBURARY 2013 “The best music is border music, the sound of cultures colliding. In the late 20th century Black Australians assimilated Country & Western, that whitest of American musical forms, to tell the story of their physical subjugation, spiritual stoicism and eventual political awakening.” —Jon Langford, from the liner notes Roger Knox, aka the Koori King of Country or Black grog-drinkers, pelicans and policemen. Elvis as he’s known in his homeland, is an Aboriginal Australian Country & Western singer with a honeyed Stranger In My Land features guest vocals and bear hug of a voice. Bloodshot artist Jon Langford instrumental performances from Bonnie Prince Billy, (Mekons, Waco Brothers) met Knox on a visit to Kelly Hogan, Dave Alvin (X, Blasters), Sally Timms and Australia several years ago. When he heard of Roger Jon Langford (Mekons), the Sadies, Andre Williams, and the potentially-soon-to-be-lost subculture of this and perhaps the last known recording from Charlie utterly unique cultural collision, Langford knew he Louvin of the Louvin Brothers. All this star power had to be involved. Stranger In My Land is a collection is backed The Pine Valley Cosmonauts, a Chicago- of songs originally written by Aborigine artists who based loosey-goosey musical collective piloted by were Knox’s peers and predecessors; some tunes Langford and manned by a core of crack musicians previously recorded but difficult to find as well as that convenes every few years to deliver unto the world several unrecorded, handed-down folk songs (which records of vision, exploration, tribute and occasional without this recording, could have been lost forever). -

Conversations with Dallas & Travis Good (Of the Sadies)
Conversations with Dallas & Travis Good (of The Sadies) by Frank Goodman (11/2007, Puremusic.com) Our proclivity for Canadian music has slowly taken us by surprise over the years, and continues to do so. One of our favorite acts north of the border is The Sadies. We've reviewed and interviewed them throughout our history, and hope to capture them in a video interview sometime, as we did recently with their paisanos Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. For one thing, we never get to talk with bassist Sean Dean or drummer Mike Belitsky, which we'll have to remedy the next time around. The Good brothers, Dallas and Travis, are each fascinating and diverse characters that front the band. Travis is the kind of consumed and consummate guitarist that seems rarely to set the thing down, at home or on the road. Dallas is also a great player, but plays keys sometimes and gets more wrapped up in the lyric side of things as well. They are five years apart, and different to talk to, which makes the conversations interesting. After a rather monumental 2 disc Live record that featured a long list of luminary friends, The Sadies embarked on a soundtrack for the movie Tales Of The Rat Fink, about the life and times of the outrageous cartoonist Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, whose work swept through 60's culture. The Sadies were perfect for this film, since their breakneck instrumentals and genre bending attitudes ran parallel to the subject himself. Surf, Country, Psychedelia, Spaghetti Western, Punk, Bluegrass, Folk, Rock--it's all there in the Sadies music, and much more. -
