Most importantly I would like to thank my wonderful supervisors, Odd Skårberg and Eckhard Baur, for their good advice and guidance. Their continued encouragement and confidence in my work has been a source of strength and motivation throughout these last few years. My thanks to Steve Hunt for his transcription of the chord changes to “Pud Wud” and helpful information regarding his experience of playing with Allan Holdsworth. I also wish to thank Jeremy Poparad for generously providing me with the chord changes to “The Sixteen Men of Tain”. Furthermore I would like to thank Gaute Hellås for his incredible effort of reviewing the text and providing helpful comments where my spelling or formulations was off. His hard work was beyond what any friend could ask for. (I owe you one!) Big thanks to friends and family: Your love, support and patience through the years has always been, and will always be, a source of strength. And finally I wish to acknowledge Arne Torvik for introducing me to the music of Allan Holdsworth so many years ago in a practicing room at the Grieg Academy of Music in Bergen. Looking back, it is obvious that this was one of those life-changing moments; a moment I am sincerely grateful for.

  • The Sadies Northern Passages [2017 Bio] by Jason Schneider the Cover
The Sadies Northern Passages [2017 Bio] By Jason Schneider The cover of The Sadies’ new album is a powerful image of the northern lights made by photographer David Kilabuk in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sight few of us will ever get to behold with our own eyes. Yet, the awe-inspiring natural beauty and mystery captured in the photo are an ideal reflection of the music contained within. No further embellishment seems necessary. That’s been the essence of The Sadies’ story ever since the quartet comprised of singer/guitarists Dallas and Travis Good, bassist Sean Dean and drummer Mike Belitsky first exploded onto the North American scene 20 years ago. Back then there was still something called “alt-country,” a catchall for artists striving to carry on traditions with punk rock attitude. The Sadies certainly fit that description, but the breadth of their skills and musical knowledge was unparalleled since a group of fellow Torontonians left Ronnie Hawkins in the mid-‘60s to take a job backing Bob Dylan. As the aurora borealis shifted with each album The Sadies made, the overall picture took on more defined colours. On top of that was the incredible list of collaborations—Neko Case, R&B legend Andre Williams, The Mekons’ Jon Langford, Jon Spencer, Robyn Hitchcock, John Doe, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Gord Downie, Neil Young for fuck’s sake!— each one pushing The Sadies’ own sound into new, unmapped territory. Eventually, more time was taken in between albums as focus shifted to their original songwriting, and what was once the best live band in Canada became the best band in Canada, period.

  • Conversations with Travis & Dallas Good of the Sadies By
Conversations with Travis & Dallas Good of The Sadies by Frank Goodman (10/2004, Puremusic.com) This is the first time that we’ve reviewed and interviewed an act in the same issue. First of all, The Sadies are worth far more attention than that, and secondly that’s just the way it happened. You get carried away with your exuberance for the record and look down and have reviewed it, and then you run into a conversational opportunity. The Sadies are Dallas and Travis Good, both really fine guitarists, and Dallas is also fiddle adept. Sean Dean is the upright bassist, and the interview reveals him to be the co- founder of the group, originally Dallas and Sean as a duo. Mike Belitsky sings and plays drums. Not a slacker in the pack, The Sadies put on long, blistering, ardent shows. We’ve reviewed them before, and are generally way gone on this quartet. They came from punk, their familial roots are deep Canadian Country. Their dad and two uncles are The Good Brothers, just inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. The band is also deeply into instrumental composition and performance that leans convincingly into psychedelia, surf, bluegrass, and more. Favourite Colours conjures ambiences that immediately stand the quartet out into the world class realm. Conversely, this record is the singingest of their discs so far, and we hope to hear ever more of the same, since they do the hell out of it. Their vampirical cowboy look cannot be beat, and they’re superb dour showmen.

Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music Ashley Denise Melzer A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of American Studies (Folklore). Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Dr. William Ferris Dr. Robert Cantwell Dr. Patricia Sawin © 2009 Ashley Denise Melzer ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ASHLEY MELZER: Time’s the Revelator: Revival and Resurgence in Alt.country and Modern Old-Time American Music (Under the directions of Dr. William Ferris, Dr. Robert Cantwell, and Dr. Patricia Sawin) This thesis investigates the relationship between the modern old-time and alt.country movements through the comparison of four different female musicians: Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert, Gillian Welch, and Neko Case. These four women often pull from the same wellspring of old-time songs/structures/sounds, but their instincts come from exceptionally different places. The disparity between the ways they approach their music, reveals how the push toward modern capitalist industrialism has affected how different artists and communities access and transmit those old-world icons and sounds. Furthermore, their engagement specifically with the topic of gender exposes key tactical differences. Old-time musicians, Washburn and Gellert, work within the strictures of tradition so as to remain in dialogue with their community. Welch and Case play into the experimental bent of alt.country to emotionally affect listeners in order to create discreet, personal connections between themselves and their audience. iii To the ones who listen and love me anyway iv PREFACE In the summer, Florida is so hot the home becomes some dark prison of necessary air conditioning.
