This project investigates the potential of self-directed, technologically mediated composition as a means of reconfiguring gender stereotypes within the operatic tradition. This practice confronts two primary stereotypes: the positioning of female performing bodies within narratives of violence and the absence of women from authorial roles that construct and regulate the operatic tradition. The Pomegranate Cycle redresses these stereotypes by presenting a new narrative trajectory of healing for its central character, and by placing the singer inside the role of composer and producer. During the twentieth and early twenty-first century, operatic and classical music institutions have resisted incorporating works of living composers into their repertory.

    Saverio Clemente Andrea De Amici Luca Targetti Sonoda Ryuchiro, born in Tokyo in 1976, started his musical education at age 6 studying Piano. He graduated in Conducting in 2004 at the Tokyo National University of Music and Fine Arts under the guidance of James Lockhart, Masahisa Endo and Kotaro Sato. He then studied with Kurt Masur in Tokyo, Charles Dutoit at the Miyazaki International Music Festival and Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, where he was awarded the Carlo Corsini Prize in 2004 and graduated with honors in 2006. He was assistant to Gianluigi Gelmetti in numerous productions, including: La Bohème, Tancredi, Semiramide, Le Nozze di Figaro, Tristan und Isolde and La Traviata in Rome; Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro Real in Madrid; and La Rondine in Tokyo with the Japan Philharmonic. During the season 2006/07, he conducted Tosca in Siena, La Bohème for the Japan Opera Foundation in Tokyo and Il Viaggio a Reims at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.     Notes on Contributors Notes on Contributors Chris Adler lives in Elvina Bay, an off-shore community iust outside Sydney. She was born in Mill Valley, California and moved to Australia in 1994 to study at the University of Wollongong. She has been writing poems since she was a child as a way of capturing life on the page, similar to a photo or painting. She has had poems published in Australian Women's Book Review, The West Pitt.'ater Perspective, POETALK (Berkeley, California) and others. Jordie Albiston was born in Melbourne in 1961. Her first poetry collection Nervous Arcs (Spinifex 1995) won first prize in the Mary Gilmore Award, second in the Anne Elder Award, and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Award. Her second book was entitled Botany Bay Document: A Poetic History of the Women of Botany Bay (Black Pepper 1996). Her most recent collection, The Hanging of Jean Lee (Black Pepper 1998), explores the life and death of the last woman hanged in Australian in 1951. Jordie was recipient of the Dinny O'Hearn Memorial Fellowship in 1997. She holds a PhD in literature and has two teenage children. Lucy Alexander grew up in a family of English teachers, with too many books in their lives. As a result she began to write from an early age. It seemed like the only alternative to teaching. She was encouraged in her endeavours by becoming a finalist in the Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of the Year Award in 1992. At the end of her university degree she was published by Five Island Press in Fathoms a collection of the poetry of three student writers.

Badu Gili, a daily celebration of First Nations culture and history, is launched, projecting the work of fve eminent First Nations artists from across Australia and the Torres Strait on to the Bennelong sail. Launch of fourth Reconciliation Action Plan and third Environmental Sustainability Plan. The Vehicle Access and Pedestrian Safety 2016 project, the biggest construction project undertaken since the Opera House opened, is completed; the new underground loading dock enables the Forecourt to become largely vehicle-free.

Meet the new breed of ‘★★★★ Full of a wonderful sense of adventure, but also with the choreographic and Australian dance theatrical nous to pull off an eclectic and consistently satisfying night of dance.’ – TimeOut creators Co-presented by Carriageworks and Sydney Dance Company – with the generous support of The Balnaves Foundation, New Breed 2019 will provide Australian choreographers Josh Mu (Melbourne), Lauren Langlois (Melbourne), Ariella Casu (Sydney) and Davide Di 28 Nov – 7 Dec Giovanni (Sydney) with an invaluable opportunity to work with Australia’s leading Carriageworks, Sydney contemporary dance company on a newly commissioned dance piece. Showcasing a rich diversity of choreographic ideas, this talented group of emerging choreographers will create brand new pieces on members of Sydney Dance Company. These four new works will comprise the New Breed 2019 season from 28 November to 7 December. The New Breed initiative made its debut in November 2014, supporting five emerging Australian choreographers through the commissioning and presentation of new dance work. Four sold out seasons in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 ensued. The sixth instalment in the New Breed initiative will see Carriageworks, Sydney Dance Company and The Balnaves Foundation continue their commitment to the future of Australian contemporary dance, by supporting independent choreographers Josh Mu, Lauren Langlois, Ariella Casu and Davide Di Giovanni. From August, these dance makers will benefit from the extensive support of all the departments of Sydney Dance Company in readiness for their premiere season at Carriageworks, later this year.
