Any faults found within the thesis are attributable to me only. 3 ABSTRACT Open Silence: An Application of the Perennial Philosophy to Literary Creation is a dissertation that combines a creative component, which is a long, narrative poem, with a framing essay that is an exegesis on the creative component. The poem, entitled The Silence Inside the World, tells the story of four characters, an albino woman in a coma, an immortal wizard, a dead painter, and an unborn soul, as they strive to comprehend the bizarre, dream-like realm in which they find themselves. The narrative utilizes various metaphysical elements of the Perennial Philosophy for the creation of character, event and setting, and also uses the concept of Imagination as the power and place of creative endeavour. The poem comprises 8,170 lines of blank verse arranged in three-line stanzas, for a total of 62,816 words.2 The exegesis accompanying The Silence Inside the World explains the creative value to the writer of the philosophy underlying the work. It does this by examining the artistic and critical experiences arising out of the writing of the poem. The first half of the exegesis, entitled ‘Intentions: Tzimtzum’, explores the biographical background of the author, those influences not only on the motivation to write such a creative text, but also on the original desire to investigate such creativity and spirituality in the first place. It also examines those elements of the Perennial Philosophy felt necessary for incorporation into the creative component. The section then delineates the factors Harold Bloom considers necessary for the creation of strong work and considers how the intended creative project may fulfil these requirements. Finally, ‘Intentions’ presents those creative, mythic and symbolic 2 Word count includes title page and chapter titles. 4 materials gleaned from the critical process that are likely to be prove useful for the creative component. The shorter, second half of the essay, entitled ‘Reflections: Tikkun’, examines the intricacies of the drafting process for the poem and for the thesis as a whole, as well as the lessons gathered from the project and its overall success. The section ends with suggestions for further work not only for the present author, but also for others, writers and critics alike. Abstract Through the use of selected works by Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert and H.P. Lovecraft, this thesis explores the question of what it means to be human in the universe when occidental cosmologies no longer align with the universe they seek to describe. Within its view of the universe, H.P. Lovecraft’s philosophy of cosmicism offers the human creature an answer to this question, but in doing so also limits that creature to an isolated life ending in madness or death within an indifferently cold universe. While this thesis seeks to demonstrate the validity of cosmicism as a lens through which to critically interrogate science fiction texts; it more importantly endeavours to address cosmicism’s inherent limitations as a philosophy of the human creature’s place in the universe. This is done by developing neocosmicism as an outgrowth of cosmicism that offers an alternate experience of the universe and a revitalisation of the human creature’s relationship with the universe. By recognising the significant shift in the human creature’s understanding of the universe – from a Cartesian view to a Quantum view within a broader post-modern context – neocosmicism is developed as an interrogative philosophy that provides a framework for opening up a critical space in which to explore alternatives to modernity’s questions rather than offering mere reactions or polarising oppositions.

    Notes on Contributors Notes on Contributors Chris Adler lives in Elvina Bay, an off-shore community iust outside Sydney. She was born in Mill Valley, California and moved to Australia in 1994 to study at the University of Wollongong. She has been writing poems since she was a child as a way of capturing life on the page, similar to a photo or painting. She has had poems published in Australian Women's Book Review, The West Pitt.'ater Perspective, POETALK (Berkeley, California) and others. Jordie Albiston was born in Melbourne in 1961. Her first poetry collection Nervous Arcs (Spinifex 1995) won first prize in the Mary Gilmore Award, second in the Anne Elder Award, and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Award. Her second book was entitled Botany Bay Document: A Poetic History of the Women of Botany Bay (Black Pepper 1996). Her most recent collection, The Hanging of Jean Lee (Black Pepper 1998), explores the life and death of the last woman hanged in Australian in 1951. Jordie was recipient of the Dinny O'Hearn Memorial Fellowship in 1997. She holds a PhD in literature and has two teenage children. Lucy Alexander grew up in a family of English teachers, with too many books in their lives. As a result she began to write from an early age. It seemed like the only alternative to teaching. She was encouraged in her endeavours by becoming a finalist in the Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of the Year Award in 1992. At the end of her university degree she was published by Five Island Press in Fathoms a collection of the poetry of three student writers.

As a companion to the documented folio works that form the greater part of this DCA, this exegesis is intended to illuminate the artistic inception, rationale and creative methodologies of these two major works created in the period of 2003- 2008, and for which I undertook a variety of creative roles including composer, artistic director, image researcher, image director and performer. Together, these works assist the identification of my artistic practice as particular within the broader context of Australian and international music-theatre.
