  • Ancient Greece and Rome in Videogames: Representation, Player Processes, and Transmedial Connections
Ancient Greece and Rome in Videogames: Representation, Player Processes, and Transmedial Connections Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Ross Clare September 2018 Abstract Videogames are a hugely popular entertainment medium that plays host to hundreds of different ancient world representations. They provide very distinctive versions of recreated historical and mythological spaces, places, and peoples. The processes that go into their development, and the interactive procedures that accompany these games, must therefore be equally unique. This provides an impetus to both study the new ways in which ancient worlds are being reconfigured for gameplayers who actively work upon and alter them, and to revisit our conception of popular antiquity, a continuum within popular culture wherein ancient worlds are repeatedly received and changed in a variety of media contexts. This project begins by locating antiquity within a transmedial framework, permitting us to witness the free movement of representational strategies, themes, subtexts and ideas across media and into ancient world videogames. An original approach to the gameplay process, informed by cognitive and memory theory, characterises interaction with virtual antiquity as a procedure in which the receiver draws on preconceived notions and ideas of the ancient past to facilitate play. This notion of “ancient gameplay” as a reception process fed by general knowledges, previous pop-cultural engagements, and dim resonances of antiquity garnered from broad, informal past encounters allows for a wide, all-encompassing study of “ancient games”, the variety of sources they (and the player) draw upon, and the many experiences these games offer.

Wife of Augustus, the founder of the Roman Empire, mother of the emperor Tiberius, grandmother of the emperor Claudius, great-grandmother of the emperor Caligula, and great-great-grandmother of the emperor Nero, Livia gave rise to a brood (all notably not from Augustus but descended from her children from her first marriage) who shaped the early years of the Roman Empire.

Dedication To Sean, Clair and Wendy and In Memoriam Margaret Rose Neufeld, beloved grandmother and friend. ABSTRACT Livia (58 BC-AD 29), wife of the first emperor Augustus and mother of his successor Tiberius, became the first Roman woman whose image held a substantial place on coins of the Roman Empire. While predecessors such as Fulvia and Octavia, wives of Marc Antony, were the first Roman women to appear on coins, not enough examples of such coins survive to give a clear picture of how these women were represented as part of a concerted visual program. While the appearance of Roman women on coins was not entirely revolutionary, having roughly coincided with the introduction of images of powerful Roman statesmen to coins in the late 40s BC, the degree to which Livia came to be commemorated on coins in the provinces and in Rome was unprecedented.

Schmidt College of Arts and Letters In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, FL December 2016 Copyright 2016 by Andrea Schwab ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project could not have been completed without the assistance and support of so many, and my words alone cannot express my thanks to all those involved. The academic environment that Florida Atlantic University’s Department of History established facilitated my curiosity, allowing me to realize and pursue my passion in film history. I would like to express my deepest gratitude towards Dr. Jeffrey Buller, whose constant support and academic guidance gave me the confidence to challenge myself, pushing my intellectual boundaries to new levels. Our enlightening discussions over various lunches were some of my favorite parts of this entire process, and have given way to a long-lasting friendship I am honored to have. I would also like to thank my other committee members: Dr. Boyd Breslow, whose revisions and careful feedback advanced my research into unfamiliar territory, and Dr. Ilaria Serra, who sparked my interest in film analysis and allowed me to audit her Italian History through Film course. My committee members were not the only faculty to have supported me in this endeavor, and while it would be difficult to name the entire esteemed faculty at the FAU History Department, they have enriched my time here in such profound ways.

  • Rome, Season Two Panel Description
CAMWS Southern Section Asheville, North Carolina 13-15 November 2008 Panel Proposal Heroes of the Republic: Rome, Season Two Panel Description This panel will respond to the critical and commercial success of Season Two of the HBO-BBC television series Rome, which first aired in the US in the spring of 2007. Since its premiere in 2005, the ground-breaking series Rome has invited an ongoing scholarly discussion among classicists and film and media critics, both at conferences (first and most successfully at the CAMWS-Southern Section meeting in Memphis in 2006) and also in a recent collection of essays, edited by M. Cyrino, Rome Season One: History Makes Television (Blackwell, March 2008). This panel proposes to continue this dialogue by exploring, for the first time, several aspects of the second season of this intriguing saga that continues from the assassination of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March 44 BC to Octavian’s triumph in August 29 BC. A primary theme to be examined on this panel will be the further development of the individual characters from Season One and the imagery associated with those characters, their actions and motivations. All four papers will emphasize the interconnectedness between the series and the ancient historical sources, together with the series’ reception and its place within modern filmed and other media productions. AV Requirements: LCD and sound cord hook-up for PowerPoint and clips. Panelists will provide their own laptops. Time requested: 120 minutes (optimal); 100 minutes (workable) Paper #1: A Killer and a Fool: Rome’s Tragedy of Brutus. Paired against the doomed Caesar, great king and/or sinister dictator, is the equally ill-fated Brutus, philosopher and tyrannicide.

Grace Before the Fall A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Geri Lipschultz June 2012 © 2012 Geri Lipschultz. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled Grace Before the Fall by GERI LIPSCHULTZ has been approved for the Department of English and the College of Arts and Sciences by Zakes Mda Professor of English Howard Dewald Interim Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 Abstract LIPSCHULTZ, GERI, Ph.D., June 2012, English Grace Before the Fall Director of Dissertation: Zakes Mda Grace Before the Fall is an annotated novel that follows a flaneuse on her journey toward love and social activism. It is set in a pre-9/11 New York City, during a week in the summer of 1980. Geri Lipschultz, in her critical introduction, confronts both the instability and the virtual death of a text (drawing on Robert Scholes and Gayatri Spivak), as well as its revival in the hands of a contemporary reader. Lipschultz positions herself as a new reader in her revision/revival/revitalization of an old text—whose title, contents, and structure have been altered from their original construction thirty years past. She documents her course of revision, which begins with a rupture, itself a consequence of her impulse to investigate the etymology of selected words. Part of her work is an interrogation of the nature of revision itself, which might boil down to the adage offered by Heraclitus: You cannot step into the same river twice.
