CAREER BACKGROUND: Page 1 of 2 Dr. Aye Maung was born in Aung Seik Village in Rathedaung Township, Arakan State. In 1981, he graduated from the University of Veterinary Science, Yezin. He had worked at the Livestock Corporation from 1981 to 1984 and at the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department in 1984. He was an executive member of the Rakhine Literature and Culture Association and was the one of the founders of the Arakan Youth Sweeping Association. In 2009, he was retired by medical pension and began his political career when he formed and chaired the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP) to contest the 2010 general elections in Arakan State. Dr. Aye Maung had personally won a seat for the Rakhine State No.1 constituency in the Amyotha Hluttaw, and assumed his role as member of parliament on 1 February 2011. After Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP) and Arakan League for Democracy (ALD) had merged, the Arakan National Party (ANP) was formed on January 13, 2014. He became a chairman at ANP and resigned as the chairman and member of ANP on November 27, 2017 due to disagreements in the party. Afterwards, he became an independent. He had won at the Ann Township Constituency in 2015 election. DETAILS OF ARREST: He was arrested at his home by the Sittwe Township Police Force on January 18, 2018 after giving speeches along with author Win Hin Aung at a literature talk to mark the 122nd anniversary of the fall of the Rakhine kingdom to the Konbaung dynasty held at Yathedaung Township on January 15, 2018. In relation to this talk, the president issued an order under Section 196 of the Criminal Procedure and gave authority to the Second District Administrator of Sittwe District Khin Maung Oo to take action against Dr. Aung Maung and Author Wai Hin Aung under Section 122(1) of the Penal Code for high treason. Moreover, Police Chief of Rathedaung Myoma Police Station Police Lieutenant Kyaw Nu filed a lawsuit against them under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for incitement, and Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act. On September 10, 2018, Dr. Aung Maung and Author Wai Hin Aung were prosecuted under Section 122(1) and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code by the Sittwe District Court, but Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act was dropped. Maung Ba Than a.k.a Writer Ni Hphone Thone Wai, an organizer of the anniversary and chairman of the May Yu Yin Thwe Social Organization, was charged under Section 122(1) and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code at Sittwe District Court and Sittwe Township Court and a warrant was issued against him.
