HEAD OF GAMES & PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIRED FROM SEPTEMBER 2019

The School St Gabriel’s is an independent forward thinking day school (GSA/IAPS) with traditional values. St Gabriel’s, founded in 1929, is for girls aged 6 months to 18 years and boys aged 6 months to 11 years.

Our school is located in the spectacular setting of Sandleford Priory, to the south of Newbury, and occupies a beautiful Grade 1 listed building in 54 acres of parkland landscaped by "Capability" Brown, which provides a gracious setting in which to work.

The Role The Head of Games & Physical Education will be an inspirational role model and an energetic, innovative teacher and passionate leader. They will create a dynamic programme which will encourage all pupils to strive earnestly, and some to excel.

They will lead and develop a team of dedicated staff to create a culture of aspiration and engagement across the School. At the same time, they will have a rare ability to remain calm, efficient and smiling at the centre of a complex pattern of sporting activities.

The Head of Games & Physical Education will also:  devise, articulate and communicate a clear strategy for the development of a wide ranging programme of sport and physical activity  inspire and engage pupils of all ages, abilities and aptitudes  develop the physical wellbeing of all pupils  ensure that traditional games, minority sports and health promoting activity all have a high profile position in the programme  lead the strategic development and provision of PE and sport for both boys and girls with the current growth in the number of boys in School

Job Description The responsibilities of this post are wide ranging. The successful candidate will be expected to develop the role further in order to maximise its impact on the reputation of the School

1. Leadership  Develop and articulate a clear vision for future provision of sport and physical activity  Communicate the vision widely and frequently with parents, staff and school leadership team  Develop a sporting culture which embraces participation, aspiration and performance  Inspire staff to collaborate in the delivery of a high quality programme  Inspire pupils to take part in, and value, all aspects of physical activity  Critically appraise trends and initiatives in the subject and constantly review provision in this light  Control the quality of the provision in all areas of the programme across Junior and Senior Schools  Promote the School, and support pupil recruitment, through sport  Be a role model for pupils and colleagues  Be an ambassador for sport at St Gabriel’s  Develop the scholar’s programme including the Sports Leaders programme at Level 2 and Level 3

2. Management  Manage the staffing of the department, including review of current staff provision, the appointment of new coaches and teachers as appropriate, together with induction and training processes  Ensure all staff embrace a consistent and supportive approach to pastoral work  Efficiently distribute information to all relevant parties  Operate a suitable programme of minuted meetings and reviews  Be the line manager in sport for all staff and outside users  Manage the sport based PR processes, including publications and website  Ensure effective and compliant health and safety procedures

3. Teaching and Learning  Lead the development of a teaching and coaching philosophy across the School  Ensure and quality control consistently high standards of teaching and learning  Oversee planning and development mechanisms to ensure continued best practice  Oversee the management of teaching and assessment materials and processes  Oversee the effective teaching of examination PE  Be a role model of contemporary, inspiring practice

4. Competitive Programme  Produce an ambitious and inspiring programme of sporting competition at all levels  Produce an appropriate programme of training and coaching to prepare pupils for competition  Review current timetable and fixture levels and benchmark against other schools  Raise standards of performance  Inspire pupils to demonstrate commitment to training and competition  Ensure a performance pathway for able pupils  Maintain close relationships with outside clubs and representative teams  Produce, publish and circulate a suitable fixture list with an appropriate lead time  Lead, manage and accompany an inspiring programme of tours and residential camps  Ensure a strong, supportive pastoral programme  Efficiently communicate match information to pupils, parents and staff  Maintain an appropriate system of rewards and recognition of achievement in sport

5. Health and Fitness Provision Working alongside the teacher in charge of Health & Fitness:  Promote and support a programme of health promoting activity across all levels of the School  Engage all pupils to appreciate the value of exercise  Maintain a high visibility of the benefits of participation in physical activity  Inspire pupils to value their health  Oversee provision for Sixth Form physical activity and promote participation  Maintain a suitable remedial programme to identify pupils whose health is at risk, and devise suitable interventions

6. Finance, Facilities and Equipment  Have overall responsibility for sports budget  Liaise with grounds and maintenance staff to ensure facilities are well presented  Liaise with outside agencies in the letting of facilities  Ensure equipment is appropriate and well maintained  Ensure all policies and procedures are current and widely observed  Review facilities and advise on future developments

Pastoral Care and Welfare of Pupils Pastoral care at St Gabriel’s supports the learning, behaviour and welfare of all our pupils. The pupils in our care are individuals and we recognise that each and every girl arrives at the School with potential and must be able to succeed in our environment. Each girl and her parents are therefore entitled to and receive specific, focussed support, which is adapted at every stage of her development according to her needs.

St Gabriel’s aims to sustain excellent standards of pastoral care. The School is committed to the ongoing support of existing staff through a variety of INSET on important issues relating to the welfare of children and to the training and support of new staff through its programme of Induction.

Other responsibilities include supervision duties as required by the Vice-Principal, attendance at and preparation of School events such as Open Morning, Speech Day and Carol Service, and other such events as the Principal may reasonably require.

Salary St. Gabriel’s has its own generous salary scales and the DfEE Superannuation Scheme applies.
