Conferring of Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates 18–24 Deireadh Fómhair 2003 Focal Ón Uachtarán President’S Message Bronnadh Céimeanna, Dioplómaí agus Teastas Conferring of Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates 18–24 Deireadh Fómhair 2003 Focal ón Uachtarán President’s Message Fearaim fáilte roimh thuismitheoirí na mac léinn ar a bhfuil Céimeanna á mbronnadh inniu – agus go maire an óige a ngradam. Tá 154 bliain imithe ó glacadh leis an gcéad mhac léinn san Ollscoil seo. Ó shin i leith, tá os cionn 62,000 céimithe a fuair a gcuid oideachais anseo, oideachas den scoth, mar is léir ó na poist ghradamacha in Éirinn agus thar lear atá bainte amach ag céimithe na Gaillimhe thar na blianta.Tá súil agam go bhfanfaidh sibh go léir i dteagmháil linn agus go bhfeicfimid sibh ar ais anseo linn go minic sna blianta seo romhainn. On this significant day in their family life, I extend on behalf of the University a warm welcome to parents and guardians of our graduands, who are deserving of the congratulations of us all. Since it opened its doors in 1849, over 62,000 graduates have benefited from a Galway higher education, the quality of which is attested to by the eminent positions they held, and continue to hold, not only in Ireland but across the globe. We hope that you will remain in touch with us and that you will return often in the years ahead. President Nóta Faoin Searmanas The Conferring Ceremony Cruinniú Ollscoile atá i gceist anseo. Independent Productions Annual Report 2020 CONTENTS Introduction 2 The Year in Review: – Television 4 – Radio 16 Other Funding 19 Other Support Activities 20 Corporate Governance 20 Financial and Commissioning Review 21 Independent Accountants’ Report 24 Schedules 25 RTÉ INDEPENDENT PRODUCTIONS ANNUAL REPORT 2020 1 INTRODUCTION From lockdowns to working from home and remote learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, 2020 was a challenging year for everyone. As audience needs changed and evolved, RTÉ, together with the independent sector, rose to the challenge to ensure that quality Irish content was produced to inform, educate and entertain. From factual to entertainment, lifestyle, cláracha gaelige, drama, comedy and young people’s, the sector responded to unprecedented changes to daily life in Ireland and across the world to produce relevant and distinctive content. Audiences in Ireland connected with Irish content in increasing numbers across all genres, with RTÉ’s all-day share of TV viewing increasing by 1.7% to 27.2%1. RTÉ delivered 43 of the top 50 programmes on Irish television in 2020, with 14 being produced by the independent sector. Independent productions such as Ireland on Call and RTÉ’s Home School Hub played a pivotal role in meeting new audience needs and complemented News & Current Affairs content across TV, online and radio. As well as creating innovative new content and formats to meet these needs, the independent sector demonstrated great agility by adapting production models to comply with public health advice and restrictions. Series such as Ireland’s Fittest Family and Operation Transformation used best-practice production methods to ensure their safe return to screens, while new programming such as Gardening Together with Diarmuid Gavin, No Place Like Home and Open for Business reflected shifts in audience lifestyle and needs during the pandemic.

1 To: His Excellency Hojjatoleslam Sayed Mohammad Khatami, President of Iran BOBBY SANDS STREET, Tehran, Iran. THE name Bobby Sands is known throughout the world, symbolising the heroism of an Irish prisoner and his comrades who died on hunger strike in their unequal fight against their British jailors. Over the course of the past two years British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has been lobbying Iran’s Foreign Minister to change the name of Bobby Sands Street, where the British Embassy is situated, in the capital Tehran. (It was formerly known as Winston Churchill Street.) Bobby Sands was an Irish patriot and martyr, who died on 5 May 1981, after 66 days on hunger strike. Whilst in prison he was elected as a Member of Parliament [MP]. One hundred thousand people attended his funeral, including the Iranian ambassador to Sweden. The British government has no right to be in Ireland, just as it has no right to be interfering in the affairs of any other nation. We appeal to the Iranian government and its people not to bow to requests from the British government to rename Bobby Sands Street. Sincerely, Danny Morrison Michele Neylon [email protected] Kathleen Collins [email protected]. In the Name of Allah the Compassionate and the Merciful....please leave the street named for Bobby Sands Sinn Fein elected representatives: Gerry Adams MP Pat Doherty Martin McGuinness Mitchell McLaughlin Bairbre de Brun Mary Lou McDonald Martin P Meehan Martin McManus Mrs Cathy Rafferty Paul Corrigan Pat Ó Rawe Patrick MacNamee Philip Mc Guigan Paul

  • Connacht Schools Athletics Champions 1937-2021
Connacht Schools Athletics Champions 1937-2021 On 3 March 1937 at a meeting of the Dublin Schools’ Athletic Union in Jury’s Hotel, this Schools Athletic Union transformed itself into the Leinster Schools’ Athletic Union on a motion that was passed unanimously. In so doing the championships arranged by the D.S.A.U. in 1937 were thrown open to all schools within Leinster. The intent of the formation of Leinster Schools’ Athletics Union was to encourage schools and colleges in the other provinces to form corresponding provincial schools’ athletic unions. Subsequently in April the NACAI invited the schools to control the All-Ireland Schools and Colleges Championships. By the middle of May 1937 Munster and Connacht Schools' Athletic Unions had been formed and meeting between representatives of the provincial bodies took place to form the Irish Schools Athletic Association to control and organise All-Ireland Schools Championships. Prominent driving forces to form the Connacht Schools’ Athletic Union (now the Connacht Schools’ Athletic Association) were Fr Jack Flannery of St Joseph’s Garbally College, Ballinasloe and Fr Martin McDonagh of St Mary’s College, Galway. The first President of the C.S.A.U. was the Rt Rev Monsignor Joseph Walsh (President of St Jarlath’s, Tuam), who became Archbishop of Tuam (1940–1969), the first Treasurer Fr Martin McDonagh and the first Secretary Fr Flannery. The inaugural Connacht Schools Athletic Championships were held at St Jarlath’s College, Tuam on Wednesday 26th May 1937 in ideal weather conditions and were very much the brainchild of Fr Flannery. Five schools participated – St Joseph’s College, Ballinasloe, St Jarlath’s College, Tuam, St Mary’s College, Galway, St Ignatius’s College, Galway and St Muiredeach’s College, Ballina.
