D’imigh Tom Savage tar éis cúig bliana diana a dhéanamh ina chathaoirleach. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghlacadh leisean agus leis na comhaltaí eile den Bhord roimhe seo, an chéad cheann a bunaíodh faoi Acht Craolacháin na bliana 2009. Leag siad síos caighdeán ard rialachais le linn blianta a raibh deacracht eisceachtúil ag baint leo. Tagann an Bord nua i gcomharbacht orthu tráth a bhfuil borradh as an nua faoi chúrsaí eacnamaíochta, rud a fh ágann deiseanna nua, chomh maith le dúshláin nua, ag RTÉ. In ainneoin laghdú €5 mhilliún a bheith ar an gcistíocht phoiblí faoi Bhuiséad 2014, agus ag tabhairt san áireamh ardú áirithe a bheith ar an ioncam tráchtála, bhain RTÉ barrachas beag amach don dara bliain as a chéile, ar aon dul leis an mbliain 2013. Bhí bainistíocht shármhaith airgid i gceist chunseo a bhaint amach, tar éis athstruchtúrú anróiteach a dhéanamh sa bhliain 2012 agus na dúshláin a bhaineann leis an líon lucht iomaíochta i margadh na fógraíochta. Ina ainneoin sin, ní gan míbhuntáiste a baineadh an chobhsaíocht Táim ag tnúth le hoibriú in éineacht leo agus lena gcuid cumais a chur ó thaobh cúrsaí airgeadais amach. As audience needs changed and evolved, RTÉ, together with the independent sector, rose to the challenge to ensure that quality Irish content was produced to inform, educate and entertain. From factual to entertainment, lifestyle, cláracha gaelige, drama, comedy and young people’s, the sector responded to unprecedented changes to daily life in Ireland and across the world to produce relevant and distinctive content. Audiences in Ireland connected with Irish content in increasing numbers across all genres, with RTÉ’s all-day share of TV viewing increasing by 1.7% to 27.2%1. RTÉ delivered 43 of the top 50 programmes on Irish television in 2020, with 14 being produced by the independent sector. Independent productions such as Ireland on Call and RTÉ’s Home School Hub played a pivotal role in meeting new audience needs and complemented News & Current Affairs content across TV, online and radio. As well as creating innovative new content and formats to meet these needs, the independent sector demonstrated great agility by adapting production models to comply with public health advice and restrictions. Series such as Ireland’s Fittest Family and Operation Transformation used best-practice production methods to ensure their safe return to screens, while new programming such as Gardening Together with Diarmuid Gavin, No Place Like Home and Open for Business reflected shifts in audience lifestyle and needs during the pandemic.

This was not always the case. Women in particular were excluded from many areas of public discourse. Reaching back into the 19th century, the distinction between public and private spheres was an ideological one. As men moved out of the home to work and acquired increasing power, the public world inhabited by men became identified with influence and control, the private with moral value and support.

The Gerry Ryan Show on 2FM and The Death of Diana, Princess of Wales A Case-Study, September 1997 "Study submitted in part fulfillment of the requirement for the award of Master of Arts Degree in Communications & Cultural Studies” NAME: Ciara Me Carrón DATE: 6th February 1998 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my gratitude to the staff of Dublin City University for their understanding and support throughout my course of study, especially Stephanie MacBride. Thanks also to Clare Byrne, Majella Breen, Niall Me Gowan and The Gerry Ryan Show programme team in 2FM. I would further like to acknowledge my gratitude to my family, especially my father, Billy Me Carron for their patience whilst I completed my studies. Finally, this project is dedicated to the loving memory of my mother, Anne Me Carron, who died 11th November, 1997, RIP. SYNOPSIS In the modem world, there are a proliferation of media choices available to the discerning, (and not so discerning), audience. It is a rare moment indeed when, in the crowded television, radio and print media schedules, something approaching a united front occurs, and only one subject is debated, only one topic is talked about, everywhere. The number of times this has happened could be counted on the fingers of one hand. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales was one such media moment. For those of us who were not around for the death and funeral of John F. Kennedy, this was the first media-event we experienced, in terms of the tragic death and funeral of such a world famous person.

1 To: His Excellency Hojjatoleslam Sayed Mohammad Khatami, President of Iran BOBBY SANDS STREET, Tehran, Iran. THE name Bobby Sands is known throughout the world, symbolising the heroism of an Irish prisoner and his comrades who died on hunger strike in their unequal fight against their British jailors. Over the course of the past two years British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has been lobbying Iran’s Foreign Minister to change the name of Bobby Sands Street, where the British Embassy is situated, in the capital Tehran. (It was formerly known as Winston Churchill Street.) Bobby Sands was an Irish patriot and martyr, who died on 5 May 1981, after 66 days on hunger strike. Whilst in prison he was elected as a Member of Parliament [MP]. One hundred thousand people attended his funeral, including the Iranian ambassador to Sweden. The British government has no right to be in Ireland, just as it has no right to be interfering in the affairs of any other nation. We appeal to the Iranian government and its people not to bow to requests from the British government to rename Bobby Sands Street. Sincerely, Danny Morrison Michele Neylon [email protected] Kathleen Collins [email protected]. In the Name of Allah the Compassionate and the Merciful....please leave the street named for Bobby Sands Sinn Fein elected representatives: Gerry Adams MP Pat Doherty Martin McGuinness Mitchell McLaughlin Bairbre de Brun Mary Lou McDonald Martin P Meehan Martin McManus Mrs Cathy Rafferty Paul Corrigan Pat Ó Rawe Patrick MacNamee Philip Mc Guigan Paul
