Connacht Schools Athletics Champions 1937-2021 On 3 March 1937 at a meeting of the Dublin Schools’ Athletic Union in Jury’s Hotel, this Schools Athletic Union transformed itself into the Leinster Schools’ Athletic Union on a motion that was passed unanimously. In so doing the championships arranged by the D.S.A.U. in 1937 were thrown open to all schools within Leinster. The intent of the formation of Leinster Schools’ Athletics Union was to encourage schools and colleges in the other provinces to form corresponding provincial schools’ athletic unions. Subsequently in April the NACAI invited the schools to control the All-Ireland Schools and Colleges Championships. By the middle of May 1937 Munster and Connacht Schools' Athletic Unions had been formed and meeting between representatives of the provincial bodies took place to form the Irish Schools Athletic Association to control and organise All-Ireland Schools Championships. Prominent driving forces to form the Connacht Schools’ Athletic Union (now the Connacht Schools’ Athletic Association) were Fr Jack Flannery of St Joseph’s Garbally College, Ballinasloe and Fr Martin McDonagh of St Mary’s College, Galway. The first President of the C.S.A.U. was the Rt Rev Monsignor Joseph Walsh (President of St Jarlath’s, Tuam), who became Archbishop of Tuam (1940–1969), the first Treasurer Fr Martin McDonagh and the first Secretary Fr Flannery. The inaugural Connacht Schools Athletic Championships were held at St Jarlath’s College, Tuam on Wednesday 26th May 1937 in ideal weather conditions and were very much the brainchild of Fr Flannery. Five schools participated – St Joseph’s College, Ballinasloe, St Jarlath’s College, Tuam, St Mary’s College, Galway, St Ignatius’s College, Galway and St Muiredeach’s College, Ballina. There were seven events for senior boys, five for junior boys and two for minor boys. Eight of the fourteen events were won by athletes from Garbally College. St Jarlath’s College withdrew the following year because ‘such athletic activities infringed upon the academic pursuits of students’ and next competed in the championships in 1949. In the late 1930’s/early 1940’s a cup for the best overall school/college at the Connacht Schools Championships was presented by Francis Patrick “Frank” Fahy who served as a Galway TD from 1921 to 1953 [1st Dáil to 14th Dáil] and was Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann from 1932 to 1951. What eventually happened to the Frank Fahy Cup is unclear but it ceased to be presented. In 1970 the Most Rev Dr Joseph Walsh promised to put up a cup for the best overall school. That year Garbally College won but the cup was not presented because it was not ready in time. The first official presentation was in 1971 when St Jarlath’s College, Tuam, took the laurels. It was the start of a remarkable period of overall dominance by St Jarlath’s, retaining the Walsh Cup an unbroken 25 times. In the nascent years of the C.S.A.U. the first All-Ireland title to be won by a Connacht athlete was in Shot Put by Thomas Fahy (St Mary’s College, Galway) in 1938, while the first All-Ireland track title was won by Kevin Ryle (Garbally College) in 1940 in the half mile. Kevin Ryle went on to the priesthood and returned to St Patrick’s Garbally as a teacher. Over the following years he provided coaching in many of the schools in the province. In 1954 Garbally College became the first Connacht school to win the Royal College of Science Cup at the All-Ireland Schools Championships held at the Iveagh Grounds, Crumlin in Dublin. Eighteen years passed before another Connacht school, St Jarlath’s Tuam, hoisted the RCS trophy in 1972, went on to retain it the following year and regained it in 1975. Forty-two years passed before St Mary’s Galway in 2017 became the next and third Connacht college to win Royal College of Science Cup.
