It is a member of a speciose Holarctic genus with species that are often very abundant and commonly collected in a variety of habitats. The North American species were revised by Anderson (1971; 1976; 1983) with subsequent changes in nomenclature with a better understanding of relationships with Palaearctic species (for updated nomenclature see Larson et al.2000). Historically two genus names, Hygrotus Stephens and Coelambus Thomson, have been recognized at either genus or subgenus ranks. North American and northern European workers have traditionally recognized one genus and have often ignored the subgenus ranks entirely, whereas southern Europeans have recognized either two genera or, at least, have emphasized the use of subgenus names. Members of Hygrotus are very rounded and robust and have the anterior clypeal margin beaded or flattened. Members of Coelambus are elongate oval and have the anterior clypeal margin evenly rounded (except in two derived Nearctic species). These two groups are probably not closely related (Miller, 2001), but evidence is not strong at this time, and for the purposes of this report I recognize all Hygrotus and Coelambus species in one genus. Hygrotus diversipes is, in some respects, a typical member of the group that includes Coelambus species (Figs 1-2). -

(Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida: Hirmocystidae) is described from the adults of the water scavenger beetle Tropisternus collaris (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) collected from B A Steinhagen Lake in the Cherokee Unit of the Big Thicket National Preserve, Tyler County, Texas, U.S.A. Trichurispora is distinguished from known genera of Hirmocystidae by a distinct ‘‘trichurisiform’’ oocyst that is hesperidiform in outline, comprising a fusiform oocyst with shallowly ovoid terminal knobs or caps. Oocyst residua are present but confined to a central fusiform residuum vacuole. Adult and larval hydrophilid beetles represent distinctly different opportunities for parasite colonization and diversification. Gregarines have been reported from both adult and larval hydrophilid beetles, but no species and no genus is reported from both adult and larval hosts. In fact, gregarine taxic richness is often more disparate between adult and larval beetles of the same species than between host beetle species. This is the first report of a septate gregarine from an adult hydrophilid beetle in the Nearctic. Addressing Nature’s Water Needs in GSPs SGMA requires that all beneficial uses and users, including environmental users of groundwater be considered in the development and implementation of GSPs (Water Code § 10723.2, 23 CCR §355.4(b)(4)). The inclusion of natural communities in the management our state’s groundwater resources is essential to protect and restore habitat and wildlife, and as such, is an important factor in distinguishing sustainable groundwater management from the status quo. TNC Summary of GSP Review TNC has carefully reviewed the Plan and we appreciate the work that has gone into its preparation. Based on our review, we found the Plan to be insufficient in addressing environmental beneficial uses and users. The identification of environmental beneficial users, as well as their consideration when establishing the sustainability goal, undesirable results and minimum thresholds were insufficient (23 CCR §355.4(b)(4)) and lacked best available science (23 CCR §355.4(b)(1)). In the face of existing, severe overdraft, the GSP would allow groundwater management to largely ignore potential impacts to environmental beneficial users. -

THE WATER BEETLES OF MILLER BLUE HOLE, SANDUSKY COUNTY, OHIO (INSECTA: COLEOPTERA)1-2 BRIAN E. MELIN AND ROBERT C. GRAVES Department of Biology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43408 ABSTRACT Thirty-one species of aquatic beetles, representing the families Dytiscidae, Hydro- philidae, Haliplidae, and Gyrinidae, were collected in the Miller Blue Hole, a large spring, between October 21, 1967, and January 27, 1969. The numbers of each species collected are tabulated by monthly intervals. Some of the species present in this unusual habitat are rare; Tropisternus columbianus is apparently recorded from Ohio for the first time. INTRODUCTION The Ohio "blue holes" are the outlets of an extensive underground drainage system occurring in limestone bedrock. They may best be thought of as gigantic springs reaching the surface as deep, conical pools or ponds which are drained by streams flowing into Lake Erie. There are several "blue holes" located in San- dusky and Erie counties, the best known being the Castalia Blue Hole, which has been "developed" as a commercial tourist attraction, with the result that its original natural environment has been destroyed. Closely adjacent to this one is the biggest of the "blue holes," the large spring-fed lake in the center of the town of Castalia. The Miller Blue Hole, six miles to the west of this town, is nearly two acres in size, and has been preserved by the state since 1932 in a relatively natural condi- tion. It is located in a 13-acre wooded tract surrounded by agricultural lands. Earlier works dealing with Miller Blue Hole have only briefly mentioned water beetles. -

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA). -

Lytle Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon Abstract—Aquatic environments in the Madrean Sky Islands (MSI) consist of a matrix of perennial and intermittent stream segments, seasonal ponds, and human-built cattle trough habitats that support a di- verse suite of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Although environmental conditions and aquatic communities are generally distinct in lotic and lentic habitats, MSI streams are characterized by isolated perennial pools for much of the year, and thus seasonally occur as lentic environments. In this study, we compared habitat characteristics and Coleoptera and Hemiptera assemblages of stream pools with those of true lentic habi- tats (seasonal ponds and cattle troughs) across the MSI. We identified 150 species across the 38 sites, and despite superficial similarities in habitat characteristics, seasonal ponds and stream pools in the MSI support distinct aquatic insect communities. Stream-exclusive species included many long-lived species with poor dispersal abilities, while pond-exclusive species tended to have rapid development times and strong dispersal abilities. We suggest that, in addition to perennial streams, seasonal aquatic habitats should also be a focus of conservation planning in the MSI. The larvae of the diving beetle genus Laccomimus Toledo & Michat, 2015 (Laccophilinae) are studied for the first time, based on detailed descriptions and illustrations of all instars of L. distinctus Toledo & Michat, 2015, with particular emphasis on mor- phometry and chaetotaxy. The phylogenetic relationships of this genus within the tribe Laccophilini are analyzed cladistically. Lac- comimus is recovered as part of a clade that includes the genera Australphilus Watts, 1978, Neptosternus Sharp, 1882 and Laccophilus Leach, 1815 and is characterized by the presence of natatory setae on the tibia and tarsus, and within this clade it is a sister to the other genera. Third-instar larvae of Laccomimus and Africophilus Guignot, 1948 share the mediodistal insertion of the seta CO7 on the meso- and metacoxa, a short and spine-like seta TI6 on the metatibia, a ventrally sclerotized abdominal segment V and a short urogom- phus. These characters are considered plesiomorphic and indicate a basal position of both genera within the Laccophilini. -
