Damien and Thomas are French teenagers from very different upbringings who go to the same high school but can’t stand each other. When circumstances bring Damien’s mother Marianne (played by Sandrine Kiberlain) to invite Thomas to live with them, the young men are forced to coexist and work through their emerging attraction and complicated desires. Of Monsters and Gods “... The salient feature of the absurd age I was at--an age which for all its alleged awkwardness, is prodigiously rich-- is that reason is not its guide, and the most insignificant attributes of other people always appear to be consubstantial with their personality. One lives among monsters and gods, a stranger to peace of mind. -

Injured, Paul deserts. Louise decides to hide him dressed as a woman. He soon becomes “Suzanne” a Parisian celebrity in the Roaring 20’s. When granted amnesty, he is challenged to live as a man again. A Dream Come True for Historians by Fabrice Virgili and Danièle Voldman While doing some scholarly work at the Paris police archives, we stumbled across the extraor- dinary story of Paul and Louise, two young people who fell in love in early twentieth-century Paris. When war was declared in July 1914, Paul was mobilized and sent to the front. What then followed was, to say the least, a baroque adventure that could not help but interest André Téchiné, who in 1976 directed the intriguing Barocco. The couple found separation difficult, and Paul could not take the fighting, horror and carnage. Wounded, he deserted and escaped back to Louise. And thus began their ‘golden’ years, escaping the military authorities who were hunting down failed patriots. Paul the deserter disguised himself as a woman and, for ten years, until a general amnesty was declared, Paul became Suzanne and lived as a flapper with Louise. -

Selena, Alain’s wife, a famous stage actress, is of the opposite opinion. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT Our world keeps changing. It always has been. The challenge is our ability to keep an eye on that flux and to understand what is truly at stake in order to adapt, or not. After all, this is what politics and opinions are about. The digitalization of our world and its reconfiguration into algorithms is the modern vector of a change that confuses and overwhelms us. Digital economy infriges rules and often laws. Moreover it questions what seemed solid and granted in society. Yet, it dissolves on mere contact. Non-Fiction does not attempt to analyze workings of this new economy, but rather to observe how those questions shake us, personally, emotionally, and sometimes humorously. OLIVIER ASSAYAS (DIRECTOR) Born in Paris on January 25th 1955, Olivier Assayas started out as a painter and graphic designer. -

Network Films: a Global Genre?
Network Films: a Global Genre? Vivien Claire Silvey December 2012 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University. ii This thesis is solely my original work, except where due reference is given. iii Acknowledgements I am extremely grateful for all the time and effort my dear supervisor Cathie Summerhayes has invested throughout this project. Her constant support, encouragement, advice and wisdom have been absolutely indispensable. To that master of words, puns and keeping his hat on during the toughest times of semester, Roger Hillman, I extend profound gratitude. Roger‟s generosity with opportunities for co-publishing, lecturing and tutoring, and enthusiasm for all things Turkish German, musical and filmic has been invaluable. For all our conversations and film-loans, I warmly say to Gino Moliterno grazie mille! I am indebted to Gaik Cheng Khoo, Russell Smith and Fiona Jenkins, who have provided valuable information, lecturing and tutoring roles. I am also grateful for the APA scholarship and for all the helpful administration staff in the School of Cultural Inquiry. At the heart of this thesis lies the influence of my mother Elizabeth, who has taken me to see scores of “foreign” and “art” films over the years, and my father Jerry, with whom I have watched countless Hollywood movies. Thank you for instilling in me a fascination for all things “world cinema”, for your help, and for providing a caring home. To my gorgeous Dave, thank you for all your love, motivation, cooking and advice. I am enormously honoured to have you by my side. -

A PSYCHOSEXUAL BLACK COMEDY Press Contacts: Kevin McLean | [email protected] Kara MacLean | [email protected] USA/FRANCE / 2017 / 83 minutes / English with French Subtitles / Color / DCP + Blu-ray Alone and depressed after the suicide of her lover, American flight attendant Gina (Lindsay Burdge, A TEACHER) travels to Paris and hooks up with nightclub bartender Jerome (Damien Bonnard, STAYING VERTICAL) on her layover. But as Gina falls deeper into lust and opts to stay in France, this harmless rendezvous quickly turns into unrequited amour fou. When Jerome’s ex Clémence (Esther Garrel) reenters the picture, Gina is sent on a downward spiral of miscommunication, masochism, and madness. Inspire by European erotic dramas from the 70’s, THIRST STREET burrows deep into the delirious extremes we go to for love. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT THIRST STREET brings together two of my longest-standing, most nagging obsessions: France and Don Quixote. I spent my junior year of high school as an exchange student in France, in a foolish attempt to live out my dream of being a French poet. I realized within days that I wasn’t French (and never would be) and that poetry wasn’t for me, but nearly two decades later, I still find myself just as obsessed with the place. Our protagonist Gina is my Quixote, unflinching in her quest to find that most important (and ridiculous) thing: love. The emotions of THIRST STREET are just as hysterical as those in my last few movies, but the style here is much more fluid and deliberate, with surreal lighting increasingly threatening to devour the picture. -
