Benché organizzata in Italia, all’evento partecipano sportivi di tutte le nazionalità. Per questo il Giro è considerato uno delle tre grandi corse europee a tappe insieme al Tour de France e la Vuelta spagnola. Il tragitto della gara varia di anno in anno e attraversa gran parte dello Stivale, tra salite di montagna (vero fiore all’occhiello della manifestazione) e tratti pianeggianti.
