    CHARLOTTE 49ERS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION MEMBERSHIP GUIDE MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Thank you for your support of the Charlotte 49ers! This membership guide outlines the mission of the Athletic Foundation and the benefits of being a member. Before coming on board, I spoke with people throughout the conference and across the nation, and their assessment was clear -- this is a program with a strong foundation and gold mine potential. Since my arrival, I’ve been visited by friends and colleagues who were able to see campus for the first time – and they have been blown away. What we have here, and what we should be proud of, rivals the campuses and facilities of many schools in “Power Five” conferences. We offer more than beautiful surroundings, though, because in the end, it’s always about our student-athletes. Our track and field team took the lead by winning Conference USA Championships in women’s cross-country, men’s indoor track and men’s outdoor track. Four track and field athletes earned NCAA all-America honors, along with women’s cross country runner Caroline Sang, who claimed both the C-USA and NCAA Southeast Region individual titles. Three student- athletes -- softball’s Haley Pace and Bailey Rhoney and men’s soccer’s Callum Montgomery -- were named CoSIDA Academic all-Americans for displaying excellence on the field and in the classroom. Our student-athletes donated over a record 5,000 hours of community service. In the classroom, we had a Conference USA-high 74 student-athletes earn the Commissioner’s Academic Medal with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better.

    Vol. 7 No.1 • September `2013 A newsletter from the Office of Parent and Family Services Welcome Back to More Than Just School University program offer fun and exciting ways to welcome students back to UNC Charlotte The transition back onto UNC Charlotte’s campus can be rough for everyone. The joys of summer, sleeping in and relaxing by the pool are coming to an end all while the classes are beginning. Fortunately, UNC Charlotte provides a week full of transitional events to ease that stress and to invite all students to campus. The Dean of Students office hosts a Week of Welcome (WOW) pro- gram staffed by over 130 students every year. WOW typically hosts events all over the UNC Charlotte campus from the university’s move-in day up until the second weekend of the school year. These events vary from presentations and information sessions to resource fairs and carni- vals. Our Niner Nation Family Staff member, Christina Nesbit, was able attend several events during this year’s Week of Welcome. She was able to report on several exciting programs that took place throughout the week. She says: “UNC Charlotte and the Week of Welcome committee did a fantastic job this year in inviting students back to campus! I was thrilled to see the amount of campus support and interaction that was expressed dur- ing the week. Cintron4 1Old Dominion University, 2Indiana State University, 3Grand View University, 4University of Cincinnati Modern-day political discord has led to a recent spate of athletes using their platform to make statements about America. One under-researched aspect to modern sport activism is the study of the symbols themselves, such as the controversial kneeling during the national anthem by National Football League players, statement-making pregame apparel worn by National Basketball Association stars, and other political statements. This case study examines a 2016 activist display by Old Dominion Uni- versity’s football team, known as the Circle of Unity. The display, performed before most games that season, began as a form of protest by team captains, and morphed into a gesture that was celebrated across the political spectrum. Through the lens of both Symbolic Interactionism (SI) and Critical Race Theory (CRT), the current study seeks to uncover the impetus, meaning, and ultimate impact of the symbol on a variety of stakeholders. Examining the symbol used—players and coaches stand- ing in a circle, facing out, holding hands and raising them to the sky—can further contextualize the challenging role that student-athletes have in finding their voice to speak on issues they care about in a divided America.
