Head Coach Kevin Langan sat down with the Charlotte 49ers athletic media relations staff to discuss his goals, thoughts, and outlook for the 2014 season.

I know you always want to look forward but just capsulate a little bit of the group that graduated last year (Thomas Allen, Klay Davis, Tyler Gibson, Aidan Kirkbride, Will Mayhew and Anthony Perez) and what they meant to the program? We graduated some fine young men. They had stellar careers here and they really set the standard of what we expect. They left the program certainly in better hands than when they found it. Last year’s seniors won three conference champion- ships, made the NCAA Tournament three of the four years and obviously had that great run in 2011 to the College Cup Championship game. The challenge now is for the new group of players and the players who played with them is to take the program on to bigger and better things. They left behind a fantastic legacy; a legacy of a strong work ethic, blue-collar togetherness and pride in wearing the Charlotte Jersey and we thank them for that.

Your overall thoughts or expectations on the season or goals. The goals we have on the locker room walls are clear. We want to be an Elite Eight team every season and we want to be Conference USA Champions. We have fell a bit short these past two seasons despite some wonderful achievements. The guys who are returning have a real appetite to come back and do even better this year.

I know we were Atlantic 10 defending champs for several years but now we are the defending Con- ference USA champs. Is the mindset a little different this year? Our motivation will not necessarily be to defend the title but to pursue another title. You want to look forward. If what you did yesterday still looks The 49ers captured the 2013 Conference USA Tournament big to you, then you haven’t done much today. We have to really attack it and go after it again. Other teams title. might be slightly more motivated to play us but our challenge is to get up to play every team. We’re excited, it’s a wonderful conference. We get to play great teams with great facilities. The team that wins either the regular season or the championship in this conference truly deserves it. That is what we are aiming for.

What are your thoughts on the schedule? I know we play six teams that made the NCAA’s last year but there are four or five teams beyond that who normally are regular NCAA tournament teams so you could say we almost played double figure NCAA tournament teams this year so what is your thought on our schedule? Every year we set our schedule up to play the best teams in the region and the nation. Last year’s schedule, I believe, was top 10 in the country and this year’s schedule won’t be far behind

Let’s look at our goalkeepers. It will be different this year without four year starter, Klay Davis, but we’ve re- turned some guys with experience. What is your thought on that group? We knew that last year’s senior class was a big group that we were going to lose so we really worked hard these last two years to overlap players in our program. Austin Pack has been waiting patiently for his time to play and he has worked extremely hard these past two years. Perhaps, he didn’t get the rewards he deserved before now because Klay was experienced and already established. Aus- tin is a wonderful goalkeeper, an extremely good shot stopper with a wonderful presence. He’s worked tirelessly since he has been at Charlotte. Alongside him, you have Nick Hensley who has embraced what we are trying to do here at Charlotte. He’s fitter than ever before, he’s motivated and he has worked extremely hard all summer. We also have Justin Savinon who redshirted last year. He is an incredible athlete, a wonderful shot stopper, who has huge range to claim crosses. We are in a good situation, although Klay Davis graduated, all three of these players had phenomenal springs. We only conceded two goals in seven games and both of those were to a professional team. Banks Fisher also joins us. Banks has a wonderful at- titude and mindset and we are looking forward to watching him develop over the next few years. At this time, I’m not sure who will be our number Junior defender Biko Bradnock-Brennan has one goalkeeper but who ever it is will really earn it and deserve it. been a mainstay on the 49ers defense the last two years. Now the defenders. They’ve been the mainstay of our program for decades honestly. We’ve had high level players at that position. I know we graduated a couple standout defenders, Anthony Perez and Thomas Allen, but we return several standouts in David Mayer, Biko Bradnock-Brennan and Luck Waechter. What are your thoughts on the defenders? We return Luke Waechter, who earned All-Conference USA freshmen team honors last season. He had a wonderful first season for us. He has really matured and physically developed well. Luke can play either center left back or left back. He has put himself in the position as one of the leaders in our locker room. He will play alongside Biko Bradnock-Brennan. We have spent the last two years with Biko training and defining what it means to be a center back. This spring, to me, is when he looked like he got it and completely understands what it means to be a dominant formidable center back. Also returning is David Mayer. David is another player who had a phenomenal spring and he is leader in the locker room. David can play several positions, left back, left midfield or center midfield. We also return redshirt junior Nick Barnhorst. He’s played a lot of soccer over the last two years, while he’s not perhaps been a starter every game but he has a lot of experience. He truly embraces being in Redshirt sophomore defender Luke the program and what is required of a Charlotte player. Ryan Enriquez, who redshirted last year, is physically a lot stronger. Waechter earned C-USA All-Freshman We are looking forward to seeing how Ryan develops this year. Matej Dekovic, another left side defender, comes to us from team honors last season. Croatia. He had a wonderful youth career in Croatia, playing in the top league over there. He comes to Charlotte with good experience. Malcolm Stewart, who is from the Atlanta area and a U-18 Jamaican national team player, joins the program. He’s a phenomenal athlete, a big presence, who can also play well with his feet. When you watch him play, you can see he will assimilate to college soccer well. Another newcomer is Jared Kent, who has played very high-level club soccer in Charlotte. Jared is a 6-foot-5 center back, a very dominant player, very strong in the air and on the ground. He’s in a similar vein to former 49ers standout defender Thomas Allen. Newcomer Sean Bowman, who is from the Raleigh area, is a right sided defender who is very powerful and dynamic. SEASON PREVIEW Charlotte Soccer

Now we go to the midfield. Stalwarts Tyler Gibson, Aidan Kirkbride and Will Mayhew graduated You lost a few starters there and but you also return some pretty talented players led by Conference USA All-Freshman team selection Brandt Bronico. So your thoughts on midfield? Max Rodriquez had a strong spring season for us. Last year, he developed by watching and playing with some exceptional college players (Tyler Gibson and Aidan Kirkbride). Max has really developed his game. He is a very good passer with a wonderful, busy personality. He always wants to influence the game and be around the ball. Brandt Bronico, who was a Conference USA All-Freshman team selection, returns to the 49ers midfield. Brandt had a stellar first year. He has a high work rate and he is a very composed soccer player. The chal- lenge for Brandt moving forward is to increase his productivity in the final third. He showed in the spring he is ready to do that and take over games. Also returning is Dominic Bonilla. Dominic had an up and down season last year due to injuries. He just couldn’t quite shake them. Dominic is another player who had a good spring. Dominic has wonderful ability on the ball, and has a wonderful change of pace. In the final third, he has the quality to take on the defense and get goals. Similar to Brandt, we know he can do it because he does it day after day in training. Conor Agnew returns. Last fall Conor did not play as much Sophomore midfielder Brandt Bronico earned Conference as I’m sure he wanted but he has acclimatized very well to the Charlotte Way. He has great quality on the USA All-Freshman team honors last season. ball and good athleticism so we are expecting him to play quality minutes for us this fall. Mark Sloan will be joining us this August. He is a transfer from Erskine College. He comes to us with great experience after playing high youth level in England. Mark has very good poise on the ball and displays natural leadership quali- ties. Zhuvonte Wilson graduated high school early so he joined our team last spring. He had a great spring season for us. He came in really earned respect from the whole team in the first week with his fitness levels. He was one of the fittest and fastest players on the team. Zhuvonte has wonderful technical ability and is an outstanding one v. one dribbler with the ball; he is also a very good finisher in front of goal. Newcomer Daniel Bruce, who is a similar player to Dominic and Brandt, is another skilled attacking midfielder. He is a good driving with the ball and is quick. Newcomer John Nartowicz is a central midfielder with a big presence. John is another technical player, who is good on the ball and can pass the ball off his right and left foot. He is able to switch the point of attack. Robby Thomas will redshirt this season due to a knee injury.

Giuseppe Gentile has moved onto professional soccer. However, Kyle Parker, who shared the Conference USA Golden Boot Award, returns to anchor the 49ers forwards. Your thoughts on the forwards? We return Kyle Parker, who was our leading goal scorer and shared Conference USA’s Golden Boot award last season as the league’s leading goal scorer. He had an incredible sophomore season. Kyle is a great finisher and he is very good in the air. It has been great to watch his evolution as a player. When he came to us, he saw himself more as an as- sist and a link player. However he has now embraced the role of being the main goal scorer. Hans Honer played good minutes for us in the fall. He forced his way in the lineup as the season went on by his consistent training. He is a very consistent player. Hans is a very good hold up striker for us, brings people into play, and draws the game forward very well. He is also very good on crosses and picking up scraps in the box. Monbo Bokar didn’t get to play as many minutes as he would have liked last year, behind Giuseppe Gentile and Kyle Parker. He had a great spring season and was our leading goal scorer in the spring. He has really worked on his signature finishes in front of the goal. He’s very clear and focused with his mind in what he’s going to do with the ball and that has really helped him out a lot. We’re excited for Monbo, he’s been training very hard, he’s super excited for the fall and I’m sure if he gets that first one to go in then there will be no stopping him. Also, we are bringing in Harrison Steadman, who is a big, powerful center forward. In the same style as Giuseppe Gentile, he is able to hold the ball up but also run in behind defenders. He is also a very com- posed finisher. Dean Rutherford Last season, junior forward Kyle Parker earned is also joining us. He is what you the Conference USA Golden Boot award after call a fox in the box in England! scoring 11 goals. He comes to life in the opponent’s box. The closer he is to goal, the more alert he becomes.

If somebody has never been to a Charlotte soccer game or Charlotte soccer, what would you tell them that Charlotte 49ers soccer is? There are lots of different parts to it. Firstly we play at an incredible venue, Transamerica Field. The stadium holds 4,000 and we’re among the top teams in the nation with regards to attendance. We have very vocal fans and great student support as the Queen City Army and Niner Nation come out in great numbers to cheer us on. With regards to playing style we aim to dominate our opponent in terms of possession and territory. We want to be the aggressor who plays on the front foot. We play a high tempo passing and pressing game that is based around the collect effort of the team. This normally results in lots of excitement and lots of activity around the goal. Hopefully we are a team the University and local community can feel really proud of and inspired by.

The 49ers ranked 12th in the nation in attendance last season.

Kevin Langan became the seventh coach in the 36-year history of the 49ers men’s soccer program, January 3, 2012. Langan, who was Charlotte’s associate head coach prior to becoming head coach, has been a member of the 49ers coaching staff for the last five seasons. In his first season as head coach of the 49ers, he guided Charlotte to the most successful season by a first-year head coach in the program’s history. In 2012, Langan guided the 49ers to 15 wins, an Atlantic 10 regular-season title, an appearance in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to the eventual runners-up George- town, and a national ranking the entire season. In 2012, the team posted the second-best defensive record in the program’s history and celebrated two NSCAA Scholar All-Americans (Tyler Gibson and Donnie Smith). He also became the first coach in the program’s history to start their career undefeated after seven games. In addition, two 49ers (Donnie Smith and Jennings Rex) were drafted by the MLS in his first year. In his second season as head coach of the 49ers, he guided Charlotte to a Conference USA Tournament title, a national seed in the NCAA Tournament and a national rank- ing for the majority of the season. In 2013, two 49ers earned national academic honors as Tyler Gibson was named a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American and Aidan Kirkbride earned NSCAA Scholar All-American honors. As a member of the coaching staff since 2009, Langan played an integral role in helping the 49ers reach the College Cup Finals in 2011. During his five years as a member of the 49ers coaching staff, Charlotte has won 67 games, reached a College Cup Championship game, captured two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles and a Conference USA Tournament title and made four NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2009, as an assistant coach at Charlotte, the 49ers made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1997. Charlotte ended third-ranked Wake Forest’s nation’s-best 46-game unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents. In 2010, Charlotte captured the program’s first-ever Atlantic 10 regular-season title. In 2011, Charlotte reached the College Cup for the second time in school history and advanced to the College Cup finals for the first time. The 49ers won 16 games which tied for the second most wins in the program’s history. “It is a great time to be the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer program,” Langan said. “The university boasts some of the best soccer facilities in the country. We are a part of an athletic department that is growing and hungry for success. We have worked hard to develop a great culture around the program and we are confident that we will continue to bring success to Charlotte.” In 2012, Langan coached the Charlotte Soccer Academy U-16 team to the Soccer Federation Academy Finals Week in Houston (top 8 teams in the country) for the first time in the club’s history. Charlotte was one of only three non-MLS Academies to make finals week. Before moving to Charlotte, Langan spent four years as the head boys’ coach of the Classics Elite Soccer Academy in San Antonio, Texas (now called the San Antonio Scorpions USSF Academy). He also coached the Classics Elite Soccer Academy’s U-18 USSF Academy team in 2008-2009. As a collegiate player, Langan was a standout player for the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas for the 2004-05 seasons. He captained them to a number one national ranking and the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2004. The Jersey, United Kingdom native also represented Great Britain at two World University Games; in 2001 in Beijing, China and then captaining the team in Daegu, South Korea in 2003. He was also selected to play for the England National Futsal Team on a Tour of Portugal in 2003. In England, Langan played professionally with Bristol City FC for six seasons and Forest Green Rovers FC for four years. For Bristol City he made his Cup debut against Swansea City FC and his League debut versus Wigan Athletic as an 18-year old. During his time at Bristol City FC he played in the team that won promotion to the Championship in 1998. He also played against Premier League sides, Liverpool FC, Southampton FC and West Ham United. Langan graduated with a “First Class Honors” Bachelor’s Degree in Coaching Education and Sports Performance from the University of Bath (England) in 2004 and with a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2006. He also holds his USSF Coaching “A” License. Langan, his wife Sally and son Ben (Born November 2013) reside in Charlotte.

THE HONORS Charlotte Soccer

David Schlee Memorial Award David Schlee was Charlotte’s first-ever four-year letter winner, a key figure in Charlotte’s rapid soccer development. From the initial year that the 49ers fielded a team (1976), when the program struggled to a 3-10 record, to the year he graduated (1979) and helped the Mean Green post a 16-7-1 record, Schlee was always ready to go, ready to make the extra tackle or extra run. The soccer program is earning national attention and Schlee’s a winner who will be remembered as a dedicated individual who helped lay the groundwork for the 49ers’ success. Schlee was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on the eve of the 1980 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. An annual memorial award in his name has been established, thanks primarily to former Athletic Foundation Board of Directors’ member Dick Dunn and his son, David, a three-year letterwinner. An award is presented at the end of each year to the 49er soccer player that best exemplifies David Schlee’s desire to succeed.
