The Wildcats also placed a player on the Martha Hall FUR 6 Alexa Jones FUR 5 11-member preseason all-conference team as senior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) Nicole Martinoli CIT 5 earned the nod for the second year in a row. Amy Loughran CIT 4 UNC Greensboro received seven first-place votes and was again tabbed the preseason Nikki Mares CIT 3 favorite to win the SoCon regular-season championship. Western Carolina, which finished Becca Smith UTC 3 second in the regular season in 2008 and won the conference tournament, picked up three first-place votes and earned 107 points, seven behind the Spartans. Samford was tabbed Assists third, while Furman edged Davidson by one point to claim fourth place. Player School Assists The Wildcats enter the 2009 campaign fresh off a 10-6-3 season a year ago, including an Shanna Couch CIT 4 8-3-0 mark in league play, which placed them fourth overall. Last year saw the ‘Cats race out to a 2-0-3 start, the best in the program’s 20-year history, on their way to their fifth straight double-digit win season. All five 10-win seasons have come under the guidance of head coach Greg Ashton, who is entering his sixth season at the helm of the program. GoaltenDinG leaDers Bye-Nagel will look to cap off a stellar career in 2009, her final season as a Wildcat. Newmister also added an assist in the victory. Newmister benefited from an own goal by Francis Marion to get her first goal. She then was apart of a give-and-go with Callan Elswick to cap off the scoring on the afternoon for an assist. Barnett’s first career goal was an impressive one for sure as she drilled home a 30-yard shot to the upper-right corner of the goal for a 4-0 lead at the time.

Home Openers, a success When it comes to home openers, Davidson has been on the winning side the majority of the time. Despite suffering a 4-1 setback in its home opener this year against Villanova, Sept. 4, the past six seasons has seen Davidson go 4-2, tally - ing wins against Charlotte (twice), High Point and Virginia Tech. The ‘Cats other set back came against Wake Forest in 2005. Overall in their 21-year history, the Wildcats have fashioned a 13-8 mark in their home open - ers.

Friendly Confines of Alumni Stadium The Wildcats’ have been very successful in the last five years at its home stadium. They have fashioned a 30-9-5 home mark during the past five seasons, all under the direction of head coach Greg Ashton. The ‘Cats went 5-3-2 a year ago at home.

Opening the Season on the Road The Wildcats’ three-game road swing to open the season is the longest road trip since they opened the 2006 campaign with six games away from Alumni Stadium. One of those games was at UNC Wilmington, a 2-0 setback, which is also on this three-game road swing to kick off the 2009 season.

Season Openers During the Wildcats’ 20-year history, they have gone 8-13 in opening season contests. Under head coach Greg Ashton, the ‘Cats are 4-2 after a 3-1 win at Winthrop (Aug. 22) to open the sea - son this year.
