Creating and Destroying Party Brands Craig Goodman∗ Justin Grimmery David C.W. Parkerz Frances Zlotnickx May 6, 2015 Abstract A large literature argues that parties' brands affect congressional elections. Legislators engage in a marketing effort to cultivate their own party's brand and to destroy the other party's reputa- tion. All legislators may benefit from an improved party brand, but legislators have differential incentives to contribute to the brand. We show how the variable incentives cause a distortion in a party's marketing efforts. Using text as data tools and a new collection of legislators' statement, we provide new measures of how legislators engage in party branding. Using these measures, we show extremists disproportionately contribute to the party marketing efforts, particularly when their party does not hold the presidency. This disproportionate contribution matters because extreme legislators offer more hyperbolic criticism of the other party. INTRODUCTION Forge, quench, strengthen the Marxist-Leninist Party . It was under this title that a series of articles appeared in "La Voix du Peuple", a weekly of the Communist Party of Belgium, between June 24 and August 12, 1966, designed to meet the needs of the ideological struggle and current politics within the Party at that time. This pamphlet brings together these articles. Some editorial changes have been made and some additions have been made. The first article appeared on the third anniversary of the Extraordinary Congress of the Brussels Federation of the Communist Party which reconstituted it on the basis of Marxism-Leninism. This first chapter shows by the concrete example of a regional Party, that of the capital, the importance of the ideological and political struggle within the Party, the difficulties encountered and the successes achieved. This chapter also constitutes a controversy with certain comrades who underestimated this ideological and political struggle. The second chapter shows that the ideological and political struggle within the Party is an integral, indispensable part of the whole of the ideological and political struggle of the Party, of all of its activity. -

Mujahiduddin RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM AND VIOLENCE: IS THERE ANY DIRECT CORRELATION BETWEEN FUNDAMENTALISM AND VIOLENCE? Mujahiduddin Lecture of Philosophy in Ushuluddin Faculty at State Islamic University Alauddin [email protected]. Abstract: This essay examines the correlation between religious fundamentalism and violent acts. The prominent question addressed in this paper is about is there any direct correlation between fundamentalism and violence?. To answer this inquiry, this writing is going to elaborate three points. First, it defines the term fundamentalism and describes its shared characteristic features. Secondly, it will describe the meaning and categories of violence used in analyzing correlation between religious fundamentalism movements and the utilization of violent actions such as bombing attacks, assassination, kidnapping etc. Thirdly, this article also tries to analyze the links between fundamentalism and violence and how these links are understood in the study of „fundamentalist Islam‟ and „violent political Islam‟. This essay argues that the presence of religious fundamentalism such as radical Islamic group does not always connote to violent. Whether or not a religious fundamentalism group will be advocating violent means in its movement is more likely depending on some intermediary factors such as state‟s response. Tuilsan ini membahas tentang hubungan antara fundamentalisme agama dan kekerasan. Pertanyaan yang ingin diangkat ialah apakah ada hubungan langsung antara fundamentalisme agama dengan kekerasan?. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan ini, maka tulisan ini akan mengemukakan tiga aspek, yaitu, pertama; mendefinisikan istilah fundamentalism dan menjelaskan kerakteristiknya. Kedua, menjelaskan makna dan kategori kekerasan yang digunakan sebagai kerangka teoritis dalam menganalisa hubungan antara fundamentalisme agama dan kekerasan. Ketiga adalah menganalisa hubungan tersebut dan mencoba melihatnya dari perpektif gerakan radikal Islam. -

Chapter 2 Prashant SHARMA From India Against Corruption to the Aam Aadmi Party: Social Movements, Political Parties and Citizen Engagement in India Introduction Anna Hazare, a well-known social activist, began a hunger strike in New Delhi in April 2011 to pressure the Indian Government to enact a strong and effective Lokpal (Federal Ombudsman) Act in order to root out corruption from the country, in response to the exposure of XQSUHFHGHQWHGÀQDQFLDOVFDPVDQGFRUUXSWLRQ1 3XEOLFWUXVWLQWKHJRYHUQPHQWVSHFLÀFDOO\DQGWKHSROLWLFDOFODVV LQ general seemed to be at an all-time low, which drew an impassioned response to Hazare’s fast, prompting the largest popular protest in India in recent memory. Thousands descended on the site of the fast in New Delhi in his support, leading some to call it ‘India’s Tahrir Square’ (Rajalakshmi 2011). Social media facilitated a huge outpouring of support for Hazare’s cause, the dominant tone of which was an anguished tirade against corruption. According to an editorial in The Indian Express: By now, it’s been compared to Tahrir, to 1968, even to Woodstock. For those who have never experienced the energy of a mass movement, the Anna Hazare-led movement over the Lokpal bill feels like catharsis, like revolution, a tidal wave that will sweep away the entire venal political class and replace it with those who feel their pain. What connects this crowd of ex-servicemen, yoga enthusiasts, auto-rickshaw unions, candle-light vigilantes, actors and corporate big shots and students? That they all feel let down, in different ways, by the political apparatus, and they are mad as hell (2011). -
