WINTER 2011 Andreas Klier "Only those who are in top condition can say that the Ronde is not hard. For everyone else, it's the Way of the Cross." – Andrea Tafi The Ronde van Vlaanderen, also known as Vlaanderens Mooiste - Flanders's Most Beautiful - is a classic like no other in the entire sport of cycling. Nowhere does a race so perfectly encapsulate an area's passion for the bicycle. A trip down the 250+ kilometers of road on Easter Sunday in Flanders will show you an entire country out to celebrate arguably the most difficult one day race in the world. For those that wish to win the Tour of Flanders, the race becomes something more than just another Sunday classic. For a rider like Garmin-Cervelo's road captain, Andreas Klier, it meant becoming a part of the landscape. Klier, born and raised in Germany, moved to Belgium when he became a professional, and spent over a decade plying the region's intricate web of tiny farm roads that give the biggest home field advantage in sports to riders who know all the secrets of their home turf. Klier recently moved away from Belgium, but when he returned for a cold, December photoshoot with Castelli, the hardman was all smiles. Despite the icy, snowy, freezing conditions, the former Tour of Flanders runner-up couldn't stop smiling. It was apparent that though Klier might not have been born here and might not still live here, his heart and soul will always have a home in Flanders. The cobbled monsters of the tough, hilly region of Flanders known as the Vlaamse Ardennen are difficult on a good day, but with icy coating the classic climbs of the Oude Kwaremont, the Paterberg, and the Koppenberg, a whole new level was achieved. We felt bad looking out at Klier from the warmth of the car while steadily snapping pictures, but he was content in not only his location, but in his clothing as well. Castelli's winter offerings for 2011 were more than enough to allow the former Gent-Wevelgem winner to enjoy his brief ride through the landscape he loves so much. Martijn Maaskant Lizzie Armitstead It wasn't much better for future Classics hope, Martijn Maaskant, later in the day. The young Dutchman leapt into the cycling consciousness in his neo-pro year in 2008 with 4th at the Strade Bianche, 12th at the Ronde van Vlaanderen, and an incredible 4th place in his first ever Paris-Roubaix. Since then, Maaskant has been a rider to watch, and a rider who promises to be a major contender over the next decade. In the cold and snowy conditions that morning he picked his way over the legendary slopes of the Muur van Geraardsbergen climb to the chapel under numerous centimeters of ice. The cold, snowy morning led to cold, wet conditions in the afternoon, but that didn't seem to bother Martijn at all. As he slowly climbed the final two ascents of the Tour of Flanders he laughed as the wheelspray beaded off his Nanoflex warmers and fell innocently to the ground - nowhere close to soaking him and letting in the winter cold. The day following our time with Andreas Klier and Martijn Maaskant, another rising star was up to do battle with the worst that Belgium's winter could offer. In her first full year at the highest level, young British track and road standout, Lizzie Armitstead, rocketed to five victories and numerous top placings. The fast finisher looks set to be a threat over all terrains in the coming years, but is looking at the London Olympics with particular interest - she'll go into the 2012 Olympic Games with a great chance to take medals on both the road and the track. The Summer Olympics in 2012 were almost laughably distant in the bleak, wet fog that descended on us that day. Once again though, the appalling conditions were held at bay by an array of Castelli's fabric technology and design that allows cyclists to consider riding in conditions they otherwise would only have laughed at. Tafi might have been a little light with his description of how the Ronde goes for those in top condition. Klier and Maaskant could both only shake their heads in incredulous awe when asked about just how hard the Ronde van Vlaanderen really is. 6 RADIATION 1-2-3 JACKET 10500 WINDSTOPPER® X-LITE STRETCh ShELL IS WINDPROOF AND water resistant 3 Radiation™ heat-REFLECTING removable “CLICK-IN” INSERTS 2-way yKK® zIPPERED FRONT VENTS Removable SLEEVES FOR warmer DAyS Removable integrated hOOD FOR SEVERE COLD Metallic yKK® CAMLOCK zIPPER ELASTIC BAND ON BACK KEEPS jACKET FROM RIDING uP 4-POCKET DESIGN WITh 1 zIPPERED SECuRITy POCKET REFLECTIVE PIPING ON BACK COLORS: 010 BLACK 108 GREy/BLACK sizes: s-3xL 010 108 JUST LIKE MAGIC This three-season jacket sits comfortably against the body thanks to Windstopper® X-Lite fabric, which is lightweight, has minimal bulk and has unprecedented stretch to move with you like never before.
