    LOCAL SPOTLIGHT San Juan Watershed, Monterrey, Mexico—Adapting to extreme hydro-meteorological events Photo: © Juan Ángel Sánchez de Llanos The challenge NorthMONCL AmericOVa A Monterrey, Mexico, one of Latin America’s industrial capitals with a population of over 4 million, is an important economic center for residents and Mexico alike. Unfortunately, the city is positioned in an area that is naturally prone to intense hydro-meteorological events (floods and droughts). Because most (approximately 60 percent) of Monterrey’s drinking water supply comes from upstream areas that have been degraded on a recurring basis from land-use change and phenomena such as forest fires and invasive species, Monterrey is one of the top 25 Latin American cities for water risk. Climate events can be devastating. In 2010, Hurricane Alex cost the state of Nuevo León US$1.35 billion. Poor land management cannot be solely blamed for these losses, but it plays a role. Deforestation and erosion in the San Juan watershed, alongside rampant Rio Pesquería Rio San Juan and poorly planned expansion of urban areas, can reduce infiltration in recharge zones that, in turn, exacerbates runoff and can MONTERREY contribute to flooding. Future flood events are projected to intensify in the watershed, potentially exceeding the retention capacity of Rio Santa Catarina the existing dam that protects the city from high flows. SALTILLO Rio Ramos The year following Hurricane Alex, Monterrey was hit again, this time by a severe drought. The effects of the drought were made worse by the weakened storage and regulation capacity of upstream areas. The scarcity of water ultimately damaged over 50,000 hectares of crops and killed more than 10,000 livestock.

    MEMORIA SOBRE LAS PROVINCIAS DE SONORA, SINALOA y LAS CALIFORNIAS (1820), POR MIGUEL RAMOSARIZPE Introducción y notas de Juan Domingo VmARGAS DEL MORAL Mientras que en el escenario político de la metropóli española y en casi todas sus colonias americanas la segunda década del siglo XIX se signi- ficÓ como un periodo de fuerte actividad política por el influjo de los trabajos parlamentarios desarrollados en las Cortes de Cádiz, las pro- vincias noroccidentales de la Nueva España parecían permanecer igno- radas <:>poco atendidas por los diputados participantes en las delibera- ciones gaditanas. Durante el primer ciclo constitucional (1809-1814:) se pueden citar apenas uno o dos decretos que concernían a esa región y fue hasta diciembre de 1820 que surgió a la luz un documento más amplio y de factura formal que llevó por título el de Exposición o Memoria sobreel estadonatural, civil y político militar de las provincias de Sonora, Sinaloa y las Californias. Esta Memoria se debe a la pluma y al ánimo inquieto de Miguel Ra- mos Arizpe cuya carismática personalidad le hizo destacarse entre los diputados americanos que participaron en la sesiones de Jas Cortes de Cádiz y en la elaboración de la Constitución de 1812. Nacido en San Nicolás de ras Labores, hoy Ramos Arizpe, cerca de Saltillo, siguió la carrera eclesiástica y luego de una complicada época de su vida en Monterrey se trasladó a la ciudad de México donde concluyó sus estu- dios universitarios hasta titularse como abogado en agosto de 1810. La agitada marea política de aquellos tiempos le permitió un rápido acceso a la vida pública c\lando en la península ibérica se convocó a las Cortes para elaborar una Constitución con la participación de diputados de to- das las provincias del imperio.

Based on the size and shape of the bites, these marks are attributed to a tyrannosaurine. The finding provides support for recent hypotheses on theropod feeding behavior and palaeoecology. Resumen Aquí describimos marcas de mordidas de téropodo en la tibia de un ornitópodo hadrosaurino encontradas en el noroeste de Coahuila, México. Basados en el tamaño y forma de las mordidas, estas marcas son atribuidas a un tyrannosaurino. El descubrimiento provee apoyo a recientes hipótesis sobre la paleoecología y comportamiento alimenticio de los terópodos. GDP per capita in Mexico City – the country’s second richest region after Campeche, where natural resources significantly contribute to the economy – was more than five times higher than in Chiapas in 2016. Even when resource rich regions such as Campeche or Tabasco are excluded, regional economic disparities in Mexico remain larger than in any other OECD country. However, regional disparities in terms of GDP per capita have slightly decreased in Mexico over the last sixteen years, when the richest and poorest 20% of regions are taken into account. With a productivity growth of 4.4% per year over the period 2010-16, Aguascalientes had the highest productivity growth and strongly converged towards the productivity level of Mexico City, the national frontier in terms of labour productivity (excluding Campeche). Tlaxcala recorded the lowest productivity growth of the country with -1% per year between 2010 and 2016 (excluding Campeche and Tabasco due to fluctuation of natural resource prices).

The volcano is built on a complex sequence of metamorphic and sedimentary formations of Jurassic-Cretaceous age, rhyolitic ignimbrites of late Eocene age, and massive andesitic lava flows of late Miocene. In the northwest corner of the map area, on top of this basement sequence, a complex andesitic-dacitic strato- volcano, San Antonio, and a series of andesitic-dacitic domes and cones of Pliocene– early Pleistocene age were also built. The first andesitic-dacitic emissions of Nevado de Toluca occurred 2.6 Ma and continued during late Pleistocene–Holocene time contem- porarily with basaltic to dacitic emissions of the Chichinautzin Volcanic Field in the eastern parts of the map area. Volcanism in the area has been controlled by the interplay of three fault systems active since late Miocene. These systems, from older to younger, are the Taxco-Querétaro Fault System (NNW–SSE), the San Antonio Fault System (NE–SW), and the Tenango Fault System (E–W).
