Out Words 6 Groups to Host Film, Discussion About Outing Anti-Gay Politicians by Caitlin Copple

MISSOULA – Pride Foundation is teaming with OUTlaws, a University of Montana student group supportive of gay rights, to sponsor a film and panel discussion on Tuesday, May 3, about outing closeted politicians who sponsor or vote for anti- gay legislation. The film will begin at 5:30 p.m. in room 101 of the UM School of Law with a panel discussion to follow. Suggested donation is $10, which will benefit event co-sponsor, Pride Foundation. Dinner and beverages will be provided. OUTlaws organizers and third-year law students Jen Hill-Hart and Karla Painter say that questions about the sexual orientation of certain state legislators who carried anti-gay bills last session is partly what motivated them to bring “Outrage” to Missoula. The Emmy-nominated 2010 documentary film is about outing closeted gay politicians who sponsor anti-LGBTQ legislation. “Most people in the queer community respect a person’s right to be private about his or her personal life,” Hill-Hart explained. “However, when a person actively works to undermine equality for the LGBTQ community, they forfeit their right to lead a double life because of the great harm their policies create.” According to the film’s website, it’s a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. “‘Outrage’ boldly reveals the hidden lives of some of our nation’s most powerful policymakers, details the harm they’ve inflicted on millions of Americans, and examines the media’s complicity in keeping their secrets,” according to the site. Immediately following the 90-minute film will be a panel discussion featuring leaders in the LGBTQ movement, including openly gay lawmakers and journalists.
